The Fall: What was the Sin of Our First Parents? Q: What was the sin of our first parents? A: Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit that God told them not to eat. Memory Verse She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6b Bible Reading Genesis 3:6 Discussion Questions What do you think the fruit was on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Why did Adam and Eve choose to disobey God? 73

Devotion The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve, our first parents, sinned by eating the fruit that God had forbidden them to eat. It was the very first sin that occurred after the creation of the world. You may hear people use the term forbidden fruit to talk about something that we have been denied or that we mustn t do. This comes from the account in Genesis. The story is real. There was an actual tree with actual fruit involved in this moment in history. Although paintings and illustrations often show that the fruit Adam and Eve ate was an apple, we don t really know what kind of fruit it was. While it might be interesting to think about what kind of fruit was on the tree of knowledge of good and evil, what is more important is the choices that were made. The sin that brought evil into the world wasn t really about the fruit but about the choice to disobey a direct command from God. Through that act, they came to a knowledge of evil, shame, and disgrace that God never wanted for them. They chose to believe in Satan s lie rather than rest in their relationship with God. When God prohibits us from something or commands us to do something, it is for our own good. Choosing to do things our own way instead of God s way always leads to pain, and in the case of Adam and Eve, it led to a future where mankind would suffer throughout history here on earth. But the MOST important thing, is that God is sovereign and that He loves us with an everlasting love. Even from the beginning, God had a plan to defeat sin and Satan through the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Him there is redemption and a blessed hope of eternity without pain or sin. Crafts/Activities The First Sin. Make props and puppets out of toilet paper rolls for the story in the garden of Eden. Decorate them to make Adam, Eve, the tree, Satan, and perhaps some animals. Play out the story with your kids and chat with them about any questions they may have. You can even make one into a cross and end the story with a reminder of God s redemption plan. Forbidden Fruit. Go online or to the grocery store and look at various kinds of tree fruit and talk about how our mental image of the story of Adam and Eve might change if the fruit is different. Remind them of the things that are most important about the story. 74

Notebooking Pages Can you remember the first time you sinned? Probably not. Adam and Eve did though! They were the first people created and were the first to sin. It was a most terrible moment in the history of the world. Imagine for a moment how the story might have gone differently if Adam and Eve made a different choice. What if they had chosen to obey, and that first sin never opened up the world to death and separation from God? Draw or write out some ways that things might have gone differently if they had obeyed God. What would Adam and Eve s life have been like? Cain and Abel would have lived in the garden and Abel would not have died! Would sin enter the world later on or not? How would different events and cultures in history have played out?
