From as long ago as the fourth century, some Christians began a solemn fast on St. Martin's Day, November 11. This "Saint Martin's Lent" extended all the way to Christmas, and was widely followed in the dioceses of France and Germany, and in the Middle Ages in England. Fasting was required, and dancing and similar activities were banned for the duration. The fast had a social function, too, assuring that the winter food supplies would stretch into spring. At the Second Vatican Council, some bishops argued that a revival of the long winter's fast would give the Church a chance to establish the message and themes of the Incarnation long before the holiday hubbub took hold. This proposal didn't pass, and Advent emerged as a four-week period of reflection, expectant waiting, and joyful preparation for the coming of the Lord. The season has two principal phases, with the first beginning this Sunday. The second phase commences on December 17, when the liturgy begins to unfold the story of the Savior's coming. Interestingly, the Eastern Church maintains a strongly penitential note in Advent, which is called "Winter Lent," "The Nativity Fast," or "Christmas Lent," and has laws forbidding people to absent themselves from liturgy from December 17 onward. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, November 27, 2016 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR Welcome to all who are visiting this Thanksgiving weekend. We are entering the Advent season, a sacred season of spiritual preparation to inspire us to open ourselves more completely to the ways our Lord wants to come to us. The sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to experience the Lord s healing, merciful presence will be celebrated at the following times this Advent: Thursday, December 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Saturdays, December 3, 10, 17, 3:30-4:30 p.m. This weekend, at our Sunday Masses, we pray for and with individuals who desire to become part of our Catholic Christian community through participating in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) journey. Those unbaptized will be accepted into the catechumenate, a time of deeper formation in faith. Those already baptized who desire to be in full communion with our Catholic Christian faith will be welcomed to go forward in their faith development. We are reminded as a parish community not only to welcome them but to show gracious hospitality to all newcomers in our midst and to one another. Think of how you might feel coming into a church in which you knew no one. It would be wonderful to be noticed and greeted in a friendly way. Thanks to our caring greeters who welcome all. May every one of us recognize that we are part of the greeting ministry. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES This Christmas season we would all like to have the peace of Christ, the ability to give as Jesus gave and hearts that are not troubled. As the rush begins, reflect on your past celebrations. What is it about Christmas and gift giving that you find lifegiving? What traditions would you especially like to continue? How can you use your time and talents to spread the joy of the season? GREETERS! Please Note! Greeters, please call the rectory office at 330-535-3135 to be sure your email address is on file. Also, the Greeters Ministry is in need of someone to take charge of scheduling greeters for each of the Masses. Please call the rectory at your earliest convenience to volunteer!!! R.C.I.A. Just think about it - no phone, tablet, or other distractions; just you and our Heavenly Father, together in prayer. He understands our body s need for rest, our mind s need for peace, and our soul s need to be close to Him. COME AND SPEND TIME WITH THE LORD. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 9 am - Noon I want to thank all who contributed to the hospital project in the Congo. The response was overwhelming and I am very gratified. The opening of this hospital in the Congo should be something St. Vincent Parish can be proud of. To date the amount collected is $3,332.75. Plans are to open the hospital within the next few months, and it will be the fulfillment of a dream for so many. Please keep this project in your prayers. Fr. Kraker
