July 23, 2017 Basic Truth: God made me. Key Question: Who can do what God wants you to do? Bottom Line: I can do what God wants me to do. Memory Verse: God made us to do good works. Ephesians 2:10, NCV Bible Story Focus: I can help others. Boy and His Lunch John 6:1-13 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) Do the following activity as your 4-5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Gone Fishing "Gone Fishing" is an activity that teaches fine motor skills and patience while introducing today s Bible story. What You Need: "Fish" Activity Page, blue cardstock, blue butcher paper, table, paper clips, yarn, scissors, clear tape, small magnets with adhesive backing, and a mediumsized dowel rod (Note: Be sure to have an adult monitor the children closely when using the dowel rod and magnets.) Before the Activity: Copy the Activity Page onto the blue cardstock. Cut out each individual fish. Cut the yarn into three-foot strips. Tie one end of the yarn to one end of a dowel rod. Peel the backing off of the magnet and stick it to the other end of the yarn. This will be the fishing pole. Tape a paper clip to the mouth of each fish. Drape the butcher paper over the table so that it covers the top of the table and hangs down the front. The paper should go all the way to the floor. Have a SGL sit behind the table where the children cannot see them. During the Activity: Give a child the fishing pole. Encourage the child to try and catch a fish by putting the fishing line over the table. The SGL will attach a fish to each line by placing the paper clip to the magnet. Then have the SGL tug the line. Make sure every child has a turn to fish. Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. www.thinkorange.com 2

Before the Activity: "Let's go fishing! I love to fish! We have our fishing pole (hold up pole) and a great place to fish! (Point.) Are you ready?" During the Activity: (Give a child the fishing pole and encourage them to take turns fishing.) "Great job! Let's see how many fish we can catch! (Continue activity.) You are an awesome fisherman! Now let s allow our other friends to have a turn." After the Activity: "You are all such wonderful fishermen! Today in our story we are going to hear about how Jesus used fish to feed A LOT of hungry people! I am so excited for you to hear this story! Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. Do the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each. Then switch groups and repeat the activities. 1. Loaves and Fish Loaves and Fish is an activity that retells today s Bible story while creating a visual that the children can understand. What You Need: Loaves and Fish Activity Pages, brown and blue cardstock, scissors, white butcher paper, wall tape, and cupcake liners in any color Before the Activity: Copy the Loaves Activity Page onto the brown cardstock. Copy the Fish Activity Page onto the blue cardstock. Cut out the fish and loaves along the dotted lines. You will need two fish and five loaves total. Hang the butcher paper on the wall in the activity area. During the Activity: Retell the story. When you tell the part about the loaves and fish, hang the two fish and five loaves onto the butcher paper. Give each child a cupcake liner and tell them that it is a basket. Finish retelling the story. After the Activity: Have the children come up one at a time to hang their baskets on the butcher paper to show that there was so much food there was even some left over! Before the Activity: We heard an amazing story today about a kid who helped feed 5,000 people. Kids ROCK! Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. www.thinkorange.com 3

During the Activity: There were A LOT of people listening to Jesus teach. They started to get HUNGRY! There were 5,000 people! WOW, that is a lot of lunch to fix! They needed lots and lots of food. A little boy offered to share the lunch that he brought. He had two fish and five loaves of bread. (Hang fish and loaves on the butcher paper.) (Point.) Do you think that this will feed 5,000 people? (Pause.) Well, Jesus prayed to God, and then He told them to start feeding everyone! (Give out cupcake liners.) The people ate and there was PLENTY of food for everyone! There was so much food that they even had baskets of food leftover. Let s pretend that these (hold up cupcake liners) are baskets. Everyone come up and let s put the baskets of leftovers on the wall. (Finish activity.) After the Activity: WOW! God provided food for everyone from a little boy s lunch! He was so nice to share! Kids ROCK! He knew what God wanted him to help others, so he did. Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! That s right! You rock, because God made you to help others! 2. Fish and Loaves Tic-Tac-Toe Fish and Loaves Tic-Tac-Toe is an activity that uses problem solving and fine motor skills to review today s Bible Story. What You Need: Fish and Loaves Activity Pages, white cardstock, scissors, and floor tape. Before the Activity: Copy the Fish and Loaves Activity Page onto white cardstock and cut apart. Use the tape to create a tic-tac-toe board on the table or floor. During the Activity: Divide the children into two groups. Have one group stand on one side of the tic-tac-toe board and give them all the fish cutouts. Have the second group stand on the opposite side of the board and give them all the loaves cutouts. Let the children take turns placing the fish and loaves cutouts on the board to play tictac-toe. Repeat as time and interest allow. Before the Activity: Today we re going to play a fun game called Tic-Tac-Toe! Raise your hand if you ve ever played this game before. (Pause.) Awesome! During the Activity: Today, instead of playing with X s and O s, I thought it would be fun to play with fish and loaves like the ones from our Bible story today! One team will be the fish and one team will be the loaves. Remember, the goal is to get three in a row. Are you ready? (Pause.) Great, let s play! After the Activity: That was a super fun game. I m so glad the boy in our story was willing to help others by sharing his lunch! You can help others too, because you ROCK! Tell me: Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do. 3. Loaves and Fish Relay Loaves and Fish Relay is an activity that teaches patience and teamwork while reinforcing today s Bible story. What You Need: Brown and blue construction paper, scissors, 2 large tubs or bins, and 2 pieces of butcher paper Before the Activity: Cut out fish from the blue construction paper and loaves of bread from the brown construction paper. You may draw them yourself or you may consider using the Fishes and Loaves Activity Pages from today s Bible Story Review activity. You will need either a fish or loaf of bread for each child. Crumple up both pieces of butcher paper and place one piece in each tub. Place half of the fish and bread in one tub and the other half of the fish and bread in the other tub under the butcher paper. Place the tubs side by side. During the Activity: Divide the children into two teams and have the teams line up in a single file line about 10 feet in front of each tub. When you say, Go! have the first child in each line go the tub in front of them and look for a fish or loaf of bread. When they find ONE of either a fish or bread, encourage them to go back to their team and sit at the back on the line. After the Activity: Continue with the activity until every child in line has had a turn. Before the Activity: We heard a great story today about how KIDS ROCK! We can do what God wants us to do, even as kids! During the Activity: There are loaves and fishes in these tubs. (Point.) When I say, Go, the first person in line will walk fast to their tub and find either a fish or a loaf of bread. When you have your fish or bread, go to the back of the line and sit down. Are you ready? (Pause.) (Do activity.) Great job! After the Activity: Wow, you guys were fast! God wants us to help others just like the boy did in our story today! I know you can, because kids ROCK! Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group. Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same Small Group Leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year. Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card (from the Week One Activity Pages on the Website) in your Bible at Ephesians 2:10. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. You will also need a hand stamp/stickers, Young Boy with Lunch cutout from the Activity Page, white paper, scissors, and a glue stick. Make enough copies of Young Boy with Lunch on white paper so when cut apart each small group journal has one picture. (Option: Pre-cut and glue the pictures in each journal on the page where you will be writing the children s prayer requests.) SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): It s small group time! Yay! I need my small group friends to come sit with me. I m so glad you re here, because we re still learning about kids in the Bible who rocked! (Flip through journal and show the pictures.) So far we ve heard about Jesus, Samuel, David, Daniel, Miriam, and Josiah. Then today we learned about a young boy who shared his lunch, and we don t even know his name. (Hold up journal with the Young Boy with Lunch picture or hold up the cutout.) This boy rocked because he did what God wanted him to do. And you can do what God wants you to do too! Who can do what God wants you to do? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! SGL: You sure can! Our verse is a great reminder that we can do what God wants us to do, because it says God made us to do good things. Let s stand up and say our verse together. I have my hand stamp/stickers ready if anyone wants to try and say it by yourself when we re done. Ready? (Open Bible to the verse and lay it down.) CHILDREN and SGL: God made (point both hands up) us to do (point to others and yourself) good works (thumbs up), Ephesians 2:10. (Open your hands like a book.) SGL: (Clap.) Perfect! Now who wants to try and say it by yourself first? I have my stickers/hand stamp ready. (Give each child the opportunity to say the verse on his own. Have your stickers/hand stamp ready to give when they say it.) Look at all your stickers/hand stamps! You rock! Okay, friends, now it s time to write in our prayer journal. One, two, three, come sit with me! (Open the prayer journal to the page with the Young Boy with Lunch or prepare to glue it on the page where you will be writing with your fun pen.) (Point to picture of the young boy.) This boy did a good thing in the story today. What good thing did he do? (Pause.) Yes! He shared his lunch! It didn t matter that he was young. He still did what God wanted him to do. That s why this kid rocked! Let s make a list of things we can share under this picture of the boy. When we pray we can as God to help us share what we have so we can help others. When I say your name, tell me one thing you can share and I ll write it in our prayer journal. (Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) Look! We have so much we can share. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, thank You for giving us so much. Thank You for our food and toys and clothes. Thank You for everything we have! We want to help others by sharing what we have. Please help [child s name] share (say what the child listed). (Repeat for each child.) We want to always do what You want us to do, and sharing is a great place to start! We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen.
