Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 128:1-2,3,4-5 Blessed are those who walk in God s ways. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 Paul warns the Thessalonians to stay alert because the day of the Lord cannot be predicted. Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus tells the parable of the talents, in which he teaches about the importance of using the gifts that God has given to us in service to the Kingdom of Heaven. Background on the Gospel Reading: This week s Gospel speaks of how Jesus disciples are to conduct themselves as they await the Kingdom of Heaven. In the preceding passages and in last week s Gospel, Jesus taught that there is no way to predict the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. His disciples must, therefore, remain vigilant and ready to receive the Son of Man at any time. Jesus parable talks about Christian discipleship using economic metaphors. Before he leaves on a journey, the master entrusts to his servants a different number of talents, giving to each according to their abilities. A talent is a coin of great value. Upon the master s return, he finds that the first and second servants have doubled their money, and both are rewarded. The third servant, however, has only preserved what was given to him because he was afraid to lose the money. He has risked nothing; he did not even deposit the money in a bank to earn interest. This servant is punished by the master, and his talent is given to the one who brought the greatest return. Read in light of last week s parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids, this parable teaches that God s judgment will be based on the service we render to God and to one another in accordance with the gifts that God has given to us. Our gifts, or talents, are given to us for the service of others. If we fail to use these gifts, God s judgment on us will be severe. On the other hand, if we make use of these gifts in service to the Kingdom of Heaven, we will be rewarded and entrusted with even more responsibilities. General Principles In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. (1) When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, "the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162)." Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. In all matters they should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop ( Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, no. 28). When recourse is had to Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, especially in the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds, their number should not be increased beyond what is required for the orderly and reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord. In all matters such Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop (IBID). All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine. Should there be any mishap--as when, for example, the consecrated wine is spilled from the chalice--then the affected "area... should be washed and the water poured into the sacrarium [ GIRM, 280]." (NDRHC, 29). Next Week: Details Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass and Liturgy of the Eucharist This Gospel reminds us that Christian spirituality is not passive or inactive. Our life of prayer helps us to discern the gifts that have been given to us by God. This prayer and discernment ought to lead us to use our gifts in the service of God and our neighbor. God s grace allows us to share in the work of serving the Kingdom of Heaven. +

For the Church of God, that she will joyfully proclaim and live the faith of Christ in the world. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that each of them will be strengthened in their ministry. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that their hearts will be alert to the call. For all God's people, may they use their many talents to proclaim the sanctity of life in the arenas of business, media, the arts, and politics. For mothers and fathers who await the birth of their child, that God might fill their hearts with an ever-deepening love each day. That those who are sick and those who care for them will feel God s gentle love and that their anxieties will be alleviated. For the dead and all those who mourn, may they be comforted by the promise of new life in Christ. Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called forward at Mass to receive the vocation cross and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate. Grief Support Group Our Consolation Ministry offers a monthly Grief Support Group for those who have lost a loved one, no matter how long ago the loss occurred. We meet on the fourth Saturday of every month in the Narthex meeting room, from 9:30 11 a.m. There is no cost to attend.
