LORD S DAY OF CELEBRATION July 1, 2018 In preparation for worship, please take time to silence all electronic devices, and quiet our thoughts, so that we all may focus our hearts and minds on the Lord. Prelude Let All Things Now Living arr. Hopson Welcome and Concerns of the Church Call to Worship Hymn #356 (1,3,4,5) All Creatures of Our God and King Lasst uns Erfreuen Prayer of Invocation Invitation to support The Philadelphia Project Youth Mission Phoebe Barr Julianna Fiore Scripture Reading Matthew 5:13-16; 7:12; 10:42 (p.1501,1506,1512) 9:00am Evelyn Thomson 10:45am Justin Kauffman Reader: This is the word of the Lord. All the people: Thanks be to God! Prayer of Confession Gracious God, you have demonstrated the fullness of your love in Jesus Christ. We confess that we have not loved you with a whole heart. We have not acted justly, loved mercy, or walked humbly with you our God. Please forgive us through the cross. Out of the bounty of your gifts to us, help us to eagerly serve others and never despise the day of small things. In Jesus Name. Amen. Silent Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. The Greeting

And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise It is truly right and our greatest joy to give You thanks and praise, eternal God, creator and ruler of the universe. You fashioned this world in love, and govern all the earth with grace and peace. Nations and presidents rise and fall, but Your reign is for all time, and your mercy is without end. 2

You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Born as King in David s line, He lived with the lowly and cared for the least of Your children. His power was revealed in weakness, His majesty in mercy. His only earthly throne was a cross on which to die. Even there His arms stretched out to embrace friends and foes in love. From the grave You raised him to Your right hand where he rules again from heaven, and commands true loyalty from peoples and nations. Remembering Your gracious acts in Jesus Christ, we take from Your creation this bread and this wine and joyfully celebrate his dying and rising. With thanksgiving we offer our very selves to You to be a living and holy sacrifice dedicated to Your service. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Amen. Today on this first Sunday of the month, we celebrate Holy Communion. As Presbyterian Christians, we invite all who profess faith in Jesus Christ to receive communion, regardless of denominational affiliation or membership in this church. At both services, you are invited to receive communion by coming forward down the center aisle. We break off a piece of the bread (gluten free available), dip it in the cup and eat, then return to your seat by the outer aisles. After 32 years of dedicated leadership with our Nursery School, Jennifer Addy concluded her ministry as Director and Teacher on June 30. The heart of her work has been a consistent desire to see children flourish and experience the joy of childhood, and to understand that they are known and loved by Jesus. Her impact on generations of children is incalculable. We give thanks to God for her faithful ministry among us. Narberth Borough 4th of July Celebration NPC has traditionally been a part of our town s 4th of July celebration at Narberth Playground. We are in need of volunteers to run a children s bounce & slide ride on the 4th, from 10am-2pm. Only a once-a-year commitment!! Please call or text Joyce at 484-684-2182. Narberth s 4th of July planners also needs some helpers to set up tents and tables on July 3rd between 6-9pm. Please help continue NPC s presence in this festive community celebration. You don t have live in Narberth to participate. Sign-up sheet in Chapel. Next Sunday, the Worship Band will lead an extended prelude of 20 minutes prior to the 9:00am service. All are welcome to come early and enjoy! 4

THE SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP OF ELDERS AND DEACONS Elders As there were in Old Testament times elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament Church provided persons with particular gifts to share in governing and ministry. Elders should be persons of faith, dedication and good judgment. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world. It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation committed to their charge. Together with the pastor, they should encourage the people in the worship of God, equip and renew them for their tasks in the church and for their mission in the world, visit and comfort and care for the people, with special attention to the poor, the sick, the lonely and those who are oppressed. They should inform the pastor and the session of those persons and structures that may need special attention. They should assist in worship. They should cultivate their ability to teach the Bible and may be authorized to supply places that are without the regular ministry of the Word and Sacrament. Those duties that all Christians are bound to perform by the law of love are especially incumbent upon elders because of their calling to office and are to be fulfilled by them as official responsibilities. (Excerpts from the Book of Order (2009/11)) Recommendations for Elder The Nominating Committee is receiving recommendations for the offices of Elder and Deacon to begin in January 2019. In light of the description above, if you have individuals to suggest for Elder, please write them down below. Please describe briefly why you believe the individual would be suitable for this office. It is not necessary to obtain the permission of the person you are suggesting. It is preferable for the Nominating Committee to make the initial contact should this person be nominated. For the office of Elder: Name: Reason for recommendation: Name: Reason for recommendation: Name: Reason for recommendation: (Further names may be suggested on a separate paper.) Please put this form in the collection plate, or drop off in the church office. 7

Deacons The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office. It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord s Supper. (Excerpts from the Book of Order (2009/11)) Recommendations for Deacon The Nominating Committee is receiving recommendations for the offices of Elder and Deacon to begin serving in January 2019. At our best, Elders and Deacons seek by the grace of God to be examples of Jesus Christ and models of the quality of life which God desires for the whole church. It is a great privilege and responsibility we welcome your prayers! 8
