Sixth Sunday of Easter Acts 10:25-36, 34-35, 44-48; Ps 98:1-4; 1 Jn 4:7-10 or 1 Jn 4:11-16; Jn 15:9-17 May 6, 2018 First Communion Part of the Easter Season Becoming Who we receive... by Fr. PJB Having celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter, we are now in the fifty days of the Easter Season, focusing on our reason to be thankful the promised inheritance of life eternal, in His Gift! This cause for rejoicing in His eternal banquet is anticipated by our celebration of Mass! As a foretaste of eternal life, Christ comes to us in our communion with all our sisters and brothers, every Sunday, in our Mass. The Mass is our thanksgiving meal for, and of, our faith. It is also how we EXPRESS our belonging to HIS BODY, His Family, the Church. Pope Benedict XVI often told the story of the martyrs of Abitene (a city in modern-day Tunisia). In 303 a.d., nearly fifty Christians suffered torture and death because they defied the order of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ordered them NOT to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. When asked why they had disobeyed, one said, Sine dominico non possumus Without Sunday, we cannot live. If only today ALL Catholics not only believed this, but appreciated it. All across the Catholic world, during the Easter Season, the children of our faith formation programs and parish schools come to His Table, so they might be fed for the journey in THIS life, so they (and all of us who receive HIM in the Eucharist) may be children of the life that is to come. And yet, many Catholics today (and sadly, more than most) take the gift of the Sunday Mass for granted, and do not see Sunday worship as a priority in their life. And even more seriously, parish membership (belonging) is reduced not to how I give of myself for others, but for what I get out of it! All too often, as we do in so many other areas of our lives, we begin with the premise of what I want, what s convenient, doing things to get something, etc., as opposed to a humble commitment of service, giving thanks for what has been given which really is what Sunday Mass is all about. This is why the WHOLE parish shares in this celebration by our children, who receive Him for the first time in their First Holy Communion! Together with ALL Catholics, coming together on the Lord s Day, celebrating our faith and our BELONGING, this celebration is not only cause for great joy on the part of their families, but joy for ALL in our parish!... more to follow...

I have encountered the Love of the living Christ in so many of our young people, which impels them, and each of us baptized, to share more fully in the mission of Jesus Christ. Forty-eight (48) of our youth have journeyed with our wonderful team of catechists, teen leaders (J.Crew), parents and sponsors; and have discerned themselves ready to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and accept the invitation to build God s kingdom here and now. The Sacrament of Confirmation will take place this Thursday, May 10th, in our parish church at 7pm, celebrated with our Bishop, Most Rev. Robert McElroy; along with twenty-one (21) of our sisters and brothers prepared at Our Lady of Grace, in El Cajon. With your ardent prayers, loving example and hospitable support, these young men and women have come to respond AMEN! to the LOVE which first loved us and which we have heard spoken of in our readings prayed at Mass today (1 John 4; John 15). Let these candidates for Confirmation inspire, edify and encourage us to live lives worthy of our baptismal call to make holy the world and share our lives in ministry! In the words of one of our candidates: This process [of Confirmation formation] taught me deeper compassion for my fellow man. Indeed, we pray, as they receive this sacrament of missioning, each of these candidates will use the gifts they receive to bless the world through their acts of mercy (corporal and spiritual) and reach out to those who have yet to know and love Jesus Come Holy Spirit, Come!!! Yours in His service, Raymond
