Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago are participating in a national collection this weekend to finance the final major project the Trinity Dome at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Also known as America s Catholic Church, the basilica is the largest church in the United States and is a beacon of our faith to the nearly 1 million who visit it each year and to the millions more who visit and work in our nation s capital. The bishops of the United States approved this special one-time collection to fund completion of the basilica s central dome in time for the church s 100 th anniversary in 2020. The huge dome will be covered with a mosaic of 14 million pieces of Venetian glass depicting the Trinity, the Blessed Mother, and saints who have an association with our country. For those who will be in town over the Labor Day weekend, St. Luke has activities planned for each day of this long holiday weekend. 4 You may have noticed the great Back to School sales lately. Some specials offer pencils for a penny and 17 spiral tablets! While you re stocking up, please consider doubling your purchase (at these great prices!) and donate some of these school supplies to The Learning Center (TLC). Several St. Luke parishioners tutor adults at the center mornings from 9:00 am to noon. They help supplement the free Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, High School Equivalency prep, and computer literacy provided for men and women in the North Lawndale and Little Village areas of Chicago. The students could really use donations of spiral tablets, pencils, pens, loose-leaf paper, erasers, and post-it notes. The Learning Center also has asked for printer paper, file folders, labels, dry erase markers, and plastic sheet protectors for its own work with students. You will be making a direct impact as you partner with The Learning Center to help the students reach their educational goals. Place your items in the same baskets used for non-perishable food donations for the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry in the back of church. Your school supplies will be taken to TLC at the same time the food donations are taken to the food pantry on the center s lower level. If you are interested in learning more about the tutoring program and volunteering at The Learning Center, call Gay McDonald at 708-341-9571. WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL Women from Chicago s west side and west suburbs are invited to gather this fall to pray, reflect, and converse in a series of free talks on women through the ages who have been visionaries of faith. Shelby Boblick will facilitate the discussion, which will be based on portraits from three books: Sisters and Prophets by Mary Lou Sleevi, A Passion for Life by Joan Chittister with Robert Lentz, and Chasing the Saints by Donna Pucciani. These intensely personal stories remind us that these women are related to us; they are family; they are our own. Through them we learn something about ourselves and God. There will be duplicate sessions each Monday: at 1:00 pm and at 7:30 pm. Shelby will supply the materials each week, so there is nothing to prepare in advance and it doesn t matter if participants miss one or more weeks. Everyone is welcome to attend either session when their schedule permits. The group will meet at St. Catherine-St. Lucy Church (38 North Austin Boulevard in Oak Park), which is accessible by ramp, and assistive listening devices are available. Sept. 11: St. Clare of Assisi: Holy Madness Sept. 25: The Seeker: Your own lost coin? Oct. 2: Joan of Arc: A Voice of Conscience (Note: The author of Chasing the Saints will attend the October 2 sessions!) Oct. 9: Anna: Whose whole life said Hello! to God Oct. 16: Kateri Tekakwitha: Icon of Otherness Oct. 23: Woman of Faith and Blood: Where fringe had such benefits! Nov. 6: Teresa of Avila: Face of Fire Nov. 13: Four Daughters and Their Mother: Whose Future is Unscripted For more info, call Shelby at 630-240-2765. Please continue bringing non-perishable food items for the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry on Sundays and place them in the baskets at the back of church. Cash donations are also always appreciated. Please make checks payable to St. Luke Parish and write Food Pantry on the memo line. Cash is used to buy fresh vegetables and fruit, eggs and meat from the Chicago Food Depository. Thanks for your continued support! ~St. Luke Feed the Hungry Committee
A group of Prime Timers had a very enjoyable visit to Ernest Hemingway's home and museum in Oak Park on August 18. Due to a lack of support, the museum is closing soon, so we were all happy to have experienced this part of our local heritage while we could. The Prime Timers have another exciting new program planned for Wednesday, September 20. Cathaleen Roach, River Forest Township s Senior Outreach Coordinator, will lead us on a fun-filled venture into how we can do our own memoir writing. Cathaleen will lead us through a carefully calibrated memory and writing excursion to help us get started on writing about them. By the end of the session we will have a template to use for further memory writing as well as a sense of what effective and interesting memoir writing is all about. The program is free, and it will show you a wonderful way to capture and preserve your life s memories whether it s just for yourself or to share with your children, grandchildren, and others. We will meet in the Hospitality House from 10:00 to 11:30 am. Please call Ann O Connell at 366-5279 by Sunday, September 17, to make a reservation. The 17 th Annual Brighter Futures Golf Outing returns to the beautiful, historic Oak Park Country Club, 2001 N. Thatcher Avenue in River Grove, on Monday, September 11. Register now and enjoy access to the outstanding practice facilities beginning at 10:30 am. Lunch will be served, followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 pm sharp! This fun event benefits Catholic Charities Homeless Services in the West Region. A reception, dinner, and raffle will follow the round of golf. Jeanne and Bill Hardy will be honored with the Heart of Charity Award. Non-golfers are invited to attend an alternate afternoon of card games and the evening affair for a special $125 Cocktails & Dinner package. For more information and registrations, visit www.catholiccharities.net/brighterfutures. A team from the Chicago Coalition for Inter- Religious Learning will present a series of dialogues examining how each of the world s three major religious traditions understands the essentials of morality next month. Distinguished educators from the Coalition will delve into how the Ten Commandments serve as a guide for the ethical life through an examination of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim sacred texts. The three-week mini-course will take place on Monday afternoons, September 11, 18, and 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Dominican University s Priory, Harlem Avenue and Division Street. The cost is $50 for all three sessions, and tickets and additional information are online at events.dom.edu/ faithful-people-living-word-v. AUGUST 27, 2017 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time 5
