Welcome to worship at First Lutheran! We especially welcome all who are visiting this morning! Held in Christ, our Center, and living in grateful response to God s love and grace, we welcome everyone, without exception. We make known our gratitude and appreciation of all, including people of every race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital and familial status, physical and mental ability, health status, socioeconomic situation, education level and political affiliation. Please join with us as we seek to celebrate the image of God in all people, nurture meaningful relationships, and share our collective gifts in response to the world s deep hunger for hope, love, grace, justice, and peace. In the red pew hymnal (Evangelical Lutheran Worship), page numbers are at the bottom of the page in the front of the book, and hymn numbers are typically at the top of the page for the remainder of the book. Large print hymns are available from the ushers. An asterisk (*) invites you to stand in body or in spirit. All who thirst for God s love are welcome to participate during Holy Communion. Please extend your hands to receive Holy Communion or cross your arms to receive a blessing. Children s Bibles, Busy Boxes, and White Boards are available at the sanctuary entrance. A staffed nursery (for ages four and younger) is available down the hall across from the library. An usher will be happy to help you find it! Hearing assistance devices are available outside the sanctuary or from an usher. We also have a wheelchair and a defibrillator available let someone know if assistance is needed. The congregation reads the bold print. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. Amen. Psalm 145:10-18 Hearing God s Word Refrain The refrain will be sung by All to begin and throughout the psalm as indicated Psalm Tone The verses will be sung responsively between leader and Congregation 10All your works shall praise you, O Lord, and your faithful ones shall bless you. 11They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power, 12that all people may know of your power and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; your dominion endures through- out all ages. You, Lord, are faithful in all your words, and loving in all your works. R 14The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. 15The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord, and you give them their food in due season. 16You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17You are righteous in all your ways and loving in all your works. 18You are near to all who call upon you, to all who call up- on you faithfully. New Testament Reading Ephesians 3:14-21 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. *Gospel Acclamation *Gospel John 6:1-21 P The holy gospel according to John, the sixth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat? 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. 15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. 5

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going. More about today s worship Tenth Sunday After Pentecost Today is the first of five Sundays with gospel readings from John 6, the first four of which focus on Jesus as bread of life. Today Jesus feeds thousands of people with five loaves and two fish. What we have, what we bring to Jesus table, seems like it is not nearly enough to meet all the needs we see around us. But it is not the adequacy of our supplies or our skills that finally makes the difference: it is the power of Jesus working in the littlest and least to transform this world into the world God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied (from Sundays and Seasons). Fellowship is provided by the Church Council. Flowers are provided by Pastor Ted and Marcia Kunze in memory of Pastor Ted s dad, Bill Kunze on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. Lectionary Readings for Next Week: Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15 Psalm 78:23-29 Ephesians 4:1-16 John 6:24-35 Prayers of the People We are called to remember one another in prayer. Weekly Heartbeat Holy Baptism We rejoice today to welcome into God's family through the sacrament of Holy Baptism Kirby Sue Hanson, daughter of William and Elizabeth Hanson. Please pray for God's blessing upon Kirby, her parents, and her sponsors Kayla Siewert and Jordan Seebach, as Kirby grows in faith and in years. Sign up to be a Worship Assistant! We are always in need of additional worship assistants. Please consider serving to help make worship run smoothly. We usually have availabilities next week and are also happy to take sign-ups for any Sunday in the future. You can sign up with a member of the Stewardship Committee at a table in the Gathering Space following worship, online at http://bit.ly/worshipsignupgenius, or from the church website www.flcstp.org Call Committee Update After face to face interviews and careful consideration, the call committee has agreed upon a candidate to be recommended. This is such an exciting time for which you have all been waiting so patiently! We intend to make our recommendation to the church council very soon. After that occurs, you will have the opportunity meet with the candidate, and you will also be invited to a special congregational meeting whereby all members will have a chance to vote on the candidate. Both the social opportunity and congregational meeting will take place at the church sometime in August. Your vote matters so please stay tuned! Forward in Faith Offering As we continue to move forward in faith in our search for a new pastor, we ask for your continued support with a donation to help cover expenses needed to welcome our new pastor to St. Peter. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please make your gift payable to First Lutheran and specify Forward in Faith Call Offering. Volunteers needed August 17 We re looking for 10-12 volunteers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, August 17 to help with the Second Harvest fresh food drop in the FLC parking lot. Please sign up in the gathering space or contact Betty Thompson or Nancy Helgeson. Lutheran Social Services Gratitude Gifts Calendar To kick off a five-week nutrition program for seniors in August, a Gratitude Gifts Calendar is available in the gathering space. The calendar gives us daily reminders of our abilities for which we can be grateful, and for which we might give a gift. Confirmation Camp This week Pastor Ted and some of our confirmation students will be at our Bible Camp, Shetek Lutheran Ministries this week. Blessings with them as they gather in fellowship, enjoy the outdoors, and have faith building opportunities. Nursery Attendants Wanted The FLC nursery welcomes children 4 years and younger during worship services on Sunday mornings (and sometimes during the education hour). We are looking for students in grades 9-12 to expand our team of nursery attendants, serving about once per month and being paid $10/hour of child care time. If you are interested in being considered for this position, please email bregnerflcstp@gmail.com and more info and an application will be available. Big Horns - Summer 2019 There will be an informational meeting Sunday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. for those in grades 10-12 and parents that are interested in backpacking in the Big Horns Summer 2019.
