CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ JULY 26, 2015 Liturgy Getting the Most Out of Mass Last week, I yielded this space to Fr. Paul Turner, who listed ways to get the least out of mass. If you missed it, you can check it out on the parish website. This week, I counter with ways to get the MOST out of mass: Don t eat just before coming to Mass. Come hungry to receive the Body and Blood of Christ; hungry to hear the Word of the Lord. Welcome to the Parish Prayer of St. Thomas More: Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for. Our warmest welcome to all who worship with our parish family, whether long time registered or newly arrived in the parish. If you are not registered, please stop by the Parish Office and pick up a registration form. Come early. Socialize outside or in the gathering space with others. Get to know someone new. Be willing to move toward the middle if someone comes to your pew, rather than make them climb over you. It s much more welcoming. For your convenience a drop box is located outside the Parish Office front doors if you wish to leave paperwork when the office is closed. Please do not leave checks or cash. Turn your cell phone off, so calls and texts can t interrupt your prayer. Join in singing the songs and making the responses with your whole heart and voice. Prayer and praise of God is nothing to be bashful about. Pay close attention to the readings and the homily, allowing the Word of God to enter your mind and heart. Proudly profess what you believe in the Creed. Know what you are praying for during the Prayers of the Faithful, and take time during silent prayer to offer to God your joys, your worries, and your needs. First Friday Adoration August 7, 2015, 9:00 a.m. BECOMING CATHOLIC - RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which is better known as RCIA, is a process designed for two different groups of people: Join your mind to the voice of the Priest during the Eucharistic Prayer, offering your life along with the sacrifice on the altar. Make eye contact as you reach out to others during the sign of peace. Really mean what you say. Take both the Body and Blood of Christ during Communion, the fullest sign of our unity with Christ and with each other. Stay til the end. We need the final blessing and reminder that what we receive at Mass in both Word and Eucharist prepares us to go in peace to love and serve. Offer to become an usher, lector, communion minister, server, or choir member. You ll get much more out of Mass if you are actively ministering to others. Steve Raml Director of Liturgy & Music H H Adults who are not Catholic and would like to join the Catholic Church. Adults who were baptized as children into the Catholic faith, but who have not yet received the Sacrament of First Communion or Confirmation. The Catholic Church welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds into the RCIA process. During the sessions, we hear presentations on the Bible, the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, prayer, Church history, the liturgical year, social justice and service issues, and the Mass. Each week the process gives you a chance to ask questions and deepen your faith so that you can make an informed decision if the Catholic Faith is for you. St. Thomas More welcomes you to join us and begin the process of joining the Catholic Faith. Please call Wade McFall in the Parish Office to learn more.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE FEAST Adult Formation The crowd that gathered by the Sea of Galilee was hungry. They had spent the day following and listening to Jesus. Their hunger for a leader to take away all their pain, oppression, illness and just possibly no more hunger was happening right before their eyes. Then he did feed them. It was from five barley loaves and two fish. These fed a crowd of 5000 plus the women and children. Then When they had their fill, Jesus said to his disciples, Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted. So they collected them and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. The people would have known the story of the Elisha, the prophet, who fed one hundred men from a few barley loaves. It happened to them just like during the time of Elisha, who had leftovers too they had their King but for all the wrong reasons. The experience of sharing this bountiful feast was quickly put behind them and they rushed to care for their own agendas and desires. The crowd did not see that they were fed and filled by more than bread and fish! We are hungry people. We gather for this feast of the Holy Eucharist with full stomachs, too full! We remember, pray for, and act to alleviate hunger in others. Do we recognize in this feast, that we are the leftovers we are the ones who now distribute the barley loaves and fish? We are given so much: we eat the Body of Christ, broken for us, we drink the Blood of Christ, poured out for the forgiveness of our sins, our salvation. We are given such a gift to be bread, broken and wine, poured out for others. As we all hear the Word and let it be in us; as we take Jesus Body and Blood and let it be in us we go forth to live in the manner worthy of the call we have received.
