APRIL 22, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, In today s Gospel, Jesus compares Himself to a shepherd (not always a good image in His time) and this is what Our Good Shepherd remarks about us, His sheep: My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. Years ago, a painting of Jesus, carrying the lost sheep or the lost lamb on his shoulders, was found in almost all Catholic homes, to remind us sinners never to despair of God s forgiveness and love for us. The shepherd encloses the fold safely and then, realizing that one sheep is missing, even if night approaches, he goes back to seek the lost sheep entangled in the briars. Gently carrying her to the fold is a powerful and consoling symbol of God s concern and love for us! We must then unshakably believe that, notwithstanding our unfaithful relation to Jesus, He is always there to love and save us, even when the thorns of greed, racism, pride, lust, and envy have enveloped us in the total darkness of the soul! Never despair, my dear friends, Jesus is always there with us in the middle of our depression and our painful losses. All sins are forgiven by God when we ask him for forgiveness. The only sin that God does not forgive is the sin against the Holy Spirit, which is when we assent to the devil s greatest temptation: Your sins are too horrible... God will never forgive you! If we fall into this terrible temptation, then we will not ask and, consequently, we will not receive Jesus forgiveness, not because God s infinite mercy cannot forgive all sins, but because we do not ask, and so we will not receive. As Jesus said: Ask and you shall receive. Today, April 22, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, is the 55th World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pope Paul VI instituted the World Day of Prayer for Priestly Vocations (the 4th Sunday of Easter) on April 11, 1964, by saying: O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men. You still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people in order to render them your followers and ministers to us. In the 55 years since, successive pontiffs have called on the Church to focus and pray for vocations, both to the priesthood and the diaconate. The theme for 2018 is Listen, Discern, and Live God's calling. In a general sense, we all have a vocation, a call from God, according to our state of life. For example, the vocation of married people is the very difficult task of begetting and educating our future Christians. It is a very demanding task, much more difficult to grasp and fulfill than many other vocations. In a strict Catholic sense, the term vocation means the divine call to serve the spiritual and material needs of our neighbors, without restriction of faith, origin, sex, or civil status. We need lay ministers and, using St. Martha as an example, we need religious education teachers, lectors, altar servers, cantors, ushers, greeters, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, office volunteers, etc. And, of course, we need ordained ministers, either married deacons or unmarried priests in our Latin Rite. Today we celebrate Earth Day, and we remember one of our Christian faith corollaries: Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi (Our Prayer Reflects Our Belief) regarding our relationship to creation. The biblical basis of our relation to the Earth is based on Genesis 1:28: Fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth. In light of this command from the Creator, we then pray: You made man the steward of creation, to praise you day by day for the marvels of your wisdom and power, through Jesus (5th Sunday preface). As echoed in John s gospel (1:3-4): All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was LIFE. So we, Jesus followers, celebrate today the creation of Earth and life, remembering well that we are not owners but stewards of creation, not destroying life, but conserving all living creatures, from amoebas to human fetuses: we must save and conserve life!
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS To grasp these biblical principles it is opportune to learn from our beloved Holy Father, meditating on Christian principles of creation, especially the encyclical Laudato Si which you may read in this bulletin insert. Laudato Si is the sentence which opens, in ancient Italian, the poem on creation by St. Francis of Assisi, and means Praised you be (O creator). Let s make our own these teachings of the Holy Father, so we may understand and be active in the defense of Earth and all living creatures. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. PRAYERFUL RALLY TO PROTEST PLANNED PARENTHOOD SATURDAY, APRIL 28 At 10 a.m. we will gather at the Community Pregnancy Center located next to Planned Parenthood at 1419 7th St. At 10:30 a.m. we will begin a silent Jericho Walk around the block; and 11:00 a.m. we with gather in front of PP to sing. Those unable to join the Walk can line the street in prayer in front of PP; those who need to, may bring a small chair or stool. Sarasota Military Academy has given permission to use their parking lot, which is located at 8th and Cohen. Signs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
