4th Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 Current Special Collections At St. Patrick s we do not pass the basket for second collections. Instead we invite people to consider the many appeals that come before us during the year. Information about the appeals and associated special envelopes are available on the back tables and in the vestibule. Thank you for considering these needs and acting according to your considered judgment and own resources. Currently we are receiving offerings for the following purposes: Retired Religious Sisters and Brothers Every December the Church in the United States has a special collection for retired sisters and brothers. These funds support thousands of retired religious who served Catholics so well, especially in parish schools. We will receive donations for these good women and men through Advent. To date we have received $2,601.00. Thank you for your generosity. Christmas Flowers Envelopes are available in the vestibule for people who would like to make memorial donations for Christmas flowers in our church. We will compile a memorial list and publish it on January 8, 2017. St. Patrick s Capital Campaign Our Capital Campaign, which began last January, has been very successful, having raised 75% of our $850,000 goal in just 10 months. It is now possible to make direct (non-pledged) donations whenever you desire. Special capital campaign envelopes are in the rear or the church. A plain envelope or check marked capital campaign will also suffice. Please remember that all capital campaign donations are used exclusively for upgrades and building projects within the parish. ENGAGED COUPLE SEMINARS St. Kathryn Parish - Hudson, NH Saturday, January 28, 2017 9:00AM 5:00PM Engaged Couple Seminars help couples prepare for marriage by opening doors of self awareness (for example, looking at family of origin, spirituality, and beliefs about the roles spouses take on in marriage). Fundamental communication styles and preferences are named, discussed, and woven throughout a variety of subjects during the seminar, providing a rich source of information to refer back to as couples enter marriage. Engaged Couple Seminars also provide a place for couples to meet other couples - not only to share the experiences of engagement and planning a wedding, but also to share in the excitement and struggles that go along with planning for a life together. Camps Now Accepting Registrations Camp Bernadette for girls and Camp Fatima for boys are now accepting registrations for the 2017 summer season. The camps, located in the Lakes Region of NH, offer 2-week overnight sessions for children, ages 6-15. To request a brochure, contact Michael Drumm at 603-364-5851 or e-mail mdrumm@bfcamp.com. Revised Norms on Cremated Remains On October 25, 2016, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued revised norms regarding cremation. While the document says nothing new, it does use much stronger language to clarify some common misunderstandings and to prevent the continuation of some practices now regarded as irreverent. Here are the main points. Full body burial remains the preferred practice for Roman Catholics. This custom, which originated very early in Church life, best reflects the Christian belief that the human body, living or dead, is profoundly sacred. It also imitates the experience of Christ, whose dead body was lovingly entombed. Cremation, which the Church had explicitly prohibited since the 5 th century, continues to be tolerated as an exception to the norm. Some reasons for choosing this exception could be difficulty transporting the body from a great distance, danger of health risks, unavailability of a proper burial place, and true financial hardship. Cremated remains must be buried in a sacred place. This establishes a permanent and precise location for the veneration of deceased loved ones. Cremated remains must be kept fully intact and not divided into multiple parcels for multiple interments. Cremated remains should never be inserted into jewelry, souvenir boxes, ornaments, and so forth. Such things have a high probability of being stolen or discarded by subsequent owners. Cremated remains cannot be retained permanently by family members or other people. This practice raises the possibility of eventually losing the remains and having them treated disrespectfully. Cremated remains must never be sprinkled or dispersed into the air, rivers, or other bodies of water. Such practices are intimately associated with religions that explicity reject the classical Christian doctrine of the Resurrection of the Body. [Note: burial at sea is an acceptable option but the cremated remains must be intact.] Unfortunately, each of these practices has recently occurred among our own parishioners, largely because of misinformation or the pressure of the moment. Now, however, in response to the deep concerns expressed by the Church's new document, we will strive to protect the integrity of the Church's Funeral Rites by verifying burial plans for those who freely chose cremation. Hence, Funeral Masses, Memorial Masses, and Funeral Services will always presume proper burial at a clearly determined time and place. Also, we will accommodate people who may currently possess cremated remains who now desire proper burial. Just ask for assistance and we can help with arrangements. Fr. Michael Kerper 969 - St. Patrick Parish, Nashua, NH - Pg. 6
