Yet in today s gospel Jesus advises his disciples to get away and rest, to take care of themselves. Sometimes we think that when others are in great need we shouldn't think of ourselves at all; but Jesus also honors the caregivers need. We are sent from Christ s table to care for others and for ourselves. 1000 W. Main Street, Lansdale, PA 19446 trinitylansdale.com 215.368.1710 1

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE Emily Brands Shall We Gather at the River arr. David Paxton WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Just and gracious God, The Lutheran Order for Worship has a basic pattern Gather, Word, Meal, Send offering a structure that allows for flexibility. Within the order, there are both essential and nonessential elements. It may be interesting to note that the Greeting and Prayer of the Day are the only essential elements in the Gathering. we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. The apostle Paul assures us: When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross. Jesus says to you, Your sins are forgiven. Be at peace, and tell everyone how much God has done for you. Amen. GATHERING HYMN 638 Blessed Assurance GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, powerful and compassionate, you shepherd your people, faithfully feeding and protecting us. Heal each of us, and make us a whole people, that we may embody the justice and peace of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The Prayer of the Day or Collect, meaning the gathering of the people together is a short prayer that has a very specific structure of five parts: The Invocation or address (usually God the Father), the Acknowledgement (description of the Divine), the Petition, Aspiration (the desired result), and the Conclusion. All this is done while tying in the theme of the Scriptures for the day. Please be seated. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. FIRST READING Ephesians 2:11-22 Response after the conclusion of the reading: Thanks be to God. The author of this letter is reminding his audience that originally they were not part of God s chosen people. Through Jesus death, however, they are included in God s household of faith, whose cornerstone is Jesus Christ. 3

. PSALM 23 (Read responsively) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. The Lord makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. You restore my soul, O Lord, and guide me along right pathways for your name s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION When Jesus sent his disciples out to teach and heal, they ministered among large numbers of people. Their work was motivated by Christ s desire to be among those in need. GOSPEL Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 Biblical Storyteller: Lyn Dimmig Response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord. Response after the conclusion: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN S SERMON SERMON Please stand. Pastor Chris Glod HYMN OF THE DAY 789 Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us 4

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each portion of the prayers ends: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, saying, Peace be with you. Please be seated. GATHERING OF GIFTS MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. Just as we come to the table with gifts of our own wealth, so also we bring the fruits of the earth and human labor in bread and cup. These gifts also remind us that God is the true owner of all that we might claim. 5

MUSICAL OFFERING Emily Brands SUNG RESPONSE OFFERING PRAYER The prayer concludes: we pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY With the beginning of the Great Thanksgiving prayer, we enter the main body of the Eucharist. Together, we offer thanks for all God s acts in history. Taken from The Work of the People, What We Do in Worship and Why by Marlea Gilbert. 6

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER + WORDS OF INSTITUTION The presiding minister continues. LORD'S PRAYER The Eucharistic Prayer helps to make room for us to imagine justice and peace even where none seems possible. Most of all, it prepares us for the meal, awakening us to Christ s presence and the Spirit s activity in our midst. Taken from The Work of the People, What We Do in Worship and Why by Marlea Gilbert. INVITATION TO COMMUNION + COMMUNION Please be seated. Grape juice and glutenfree wafers are available for those with dietary restrictions. If you would like communion brought to you, please inform an usher. 7

The Agnus Dei or Lamb of God comes from John the Baptist s reference in John 1:29 to Jesus as the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. It has been a part of the church s worship since the first century. LAMB OF GOD COMMUNION HYMNS HYMN 592 HYMN 624 Please stand. Just As I Am, Without One Plea Jesus, Still Lead On TABLE BLESSING The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION The prayer concludes: for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. ` SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world. SENDING OF EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS BLESSING Response: Amen. SENDING HYMN 645 Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation The dismissal encourages us to live out our mission statement as we are sent into the world. DISMISSAL We are called to embrace diversity. We are called to connect all generations to God s family. Go then, as called disciples, to make visible the Kingdom of God. Thanks be to God!
