Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. We are grateful to Jim Twyne for playing the organ and to Kelly Potts for directing the choir today. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. William is a son of Rich and Courtney Goettke. First Church does not meet during the summer. Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to participate in the full worship service, and care for younger children is available in the nursery. The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession All: One: Confession The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke Merciful God, the gift of Jesus life in us is visible in the ways we enact the fruits of your Spirit. We confess that we struggle most days with how to live as you call us to live in a world that values things over love, and self over other. We have grown to expect instant results to most things and so we forget what it s like to be patient. We find ourselves neglecting the needs of others because we run out of time to be kind to anyone other than ourselves. Loving God, forgive us for the ways in which we have run after a life that is not your will for us. Slow us down, turn us around, and recenter our hearts and our minds that we might wait patiently for you, trusting that you will always hear our cries. In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Sacrament of Baptism Sacrament of Baptism William Ford Goettke *Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to remain in worship. Younger children may go to the nursery. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture Galatians 5:16-17, 22-26 pew Bible pg. 190 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Anthem Brother James Air arr. Gordon Jacob The Lord s my shepherd; I ll not want. He makes me down to lie in pastures green; he leadeth me the quiet waters by. My soul he doth restore again and me to walk doth make within the paths of blessedness, e en for his own name s sake. Yea, though I pass through shadowed vale, yet will fear no ill; for thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still. My table thou has furnished in presence of my foes. My head with oil thou dost anoint and my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my days will surely follow me and in my father s heart always my dwelling place shall be. Scripture 1 Samuel 1:9-17 pew Bible pg. 244 Sermon Fruits of the Spirit: Patience The Reverend Katherine Kerr *Hymn No. 651 Prayers of the People I Waited Patiently for God sung to the tune of amazing grace Response The Reverend Chuck Williamson The sanctuary flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of R. Springer Hoskins, Jim Hoskins and Eleanora Overbey. The rosebuds in the sanctuary celebrate the births of Madison Jay Lucas, daughter of Chrissy and Andy Lucas; and William Heath Kruithof, son of Brittany and Adam Kruithof; and Pierson Carter Costigan, son of Emily and Will Costigan. Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Anthem Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether Harold Friedell Draw us in the Spirit s tether; for when humbly, in thy name, two or three are met together, thou art in the midst of them. Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment s hem. As brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make us sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we would true disciples be. Alleluia! We will serve thee faithfully. Part of our offering today goes to the Ten-Cents-A-Meal program, a hunger relief and at-risk youth ministry of the Presbytery of Charlotte. Children and families will pass baskets after the offering plates to collect this offering. *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. *Hymn No. 35 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty 1 Praise ye the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration! 2 Praise ye the Lord, who o er all things so wondrously reigneth, shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires e er have been granted in what he ordaineth? 3 Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly for aye we adore him. *Hymn No. 651 I Waited Patiently for God 1 I waited patiently for God, for God to hear my prayer; and God bent down to where I sank and listened to me there. 2 God raised me from a miry pit, from mud and sinking sand, and set my feet upon a rock where I can firmly stand. 3 And on my lips a song was put, a new song to the Lord. Many will marvel open-eyed and put their trust in God. 4 Great wonders you have done, O Lord, all purposed for our good. Unable every one to name, I bow in gratitude. *Hymn No. 39 Great Is Thy Faithfulness 1 *Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever wilt be. Refrain: Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! 2 Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. (Refrain) 3 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain)
