Page 2 A note from Fr. John Dear Parishioners, Before too long, summer will be over and the intense business of getting kids back to school will begin again. I am looking forward to our Ministry Faire, and this project causes me to offer the possibility of helping at our outstanding food bank. I would like to thank the volunteers at our food bank for their excellent ministry, which does much to alleviate the worries and frustrations of so many families. The food bank team, specifically its grant writing committee, needs help of three members who have experience in fundraising and grant writing. If you would like to help in this ministry, which is all about multiplying loaves and fishes, please contact the food bank and volunteer your time and your gifts. And thank you to all parishioners who support the food bank on a regular basis. With your help you are also touching dozens of families lives. Fr. Johnny ~ Pastor From Fr. Faucher I said last week that I am going to concentrate today not on the Gospel, but on the second readings for all of this season the letter of Paul to the Romans. This is again part of orderly time where we listen to section after section of the letter, in order. The letter was probably written while Paul was in Corinth, and was transcribed by one of his assistants. The date for it is probably 55 or 56 AD. The Church of Rome had been in existence for a number of years by then. In 49 AD the Jews and the Jewish Christians were expelled from Rome by the Emperor Claudius, and a number of them came to Corinth where they met Paul. When Nero became emperor in 54 AD, he allowed the Jews and the Christian Jews to return. The returning Jewish Christians had conflicts with the Gentile Christians who had not left the city. This conflict is an important background for the letter. New Testament scholars agree the letter was composed to explain that salvation is offered through the Gospel, the message of Jesus the Christ. It is the longest of the epistles of Paul and is considered his Magnum Opus, his finest work. Catholic Jesuit Fitzmeyer says it, Overwhelms the reader with the density and sublimity of the topic of justification and the salvation of Jew and Greek alike. Centuries earlier the German Protestant reformer Tynsdale set the tone for Catholic and Protestant debate ever since when he wrote: The epistle is the principal and most excellent part of the New Testament. Catholic theology views all four Gospels as more important than any epistle, but many Protestants disagree. Thus Catholics preach most often directly about the Gospels, only mentioning the epistles. But many Protestant churches preach directly about the epistles. Martin Luther said that Paul s Letter to the Romans was, The most important piece of the New Testament. He also added the word alone to Roman s 3:28, so that it read, Thus we hold then that man is justified without doing the works of the law, alone through faith. This has been one of the major issues between Protestants and Catholics ever since. Many important Protestant movements trace their origin to the Letter to the Romans, including the founding of the Methodist Movement which became the Methodist Church, and the writings of Karl Barth, considered by many to be the greatest Protestant theologian of the 20 th century. So far in the orderly time we have gone from chapter 5 to chapter 8 of the Letter to the Romans. It is powerful stuff, and in some ways can be summed up by something read from chapter 6, on the 13 th Sunday of Orderly time: Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. Just because I don t often mention the second reading much in this column, please do not fail to read and study the second reading this summer. Fr. Tom Faucher, Pastor Emeritus SIN EUCARISTÍA NO PUEDE HABER COMUNIDAD. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho Continue on page 3

Page 3 Continue from page 2 WITHOUT THE EUCHARIST THERE CANNOT BE COMMUNITY. One of the most important tasks of the parish is to help the parishioners to know, nurture, develop and mature in their Catholic Christian faith. This is done through Catechesis (formation in the faith) and the Sacraments (Celebration of the Faith). Sunday's Eucharistic celebration is the nucleus and center of community life. Without Eucharist there can be no community. Therefore, active and conscious participation in the Sunday celebration is essential for the life of a parish. I invite all members of the parish community to make the Sunday Eucharistic celebration the most important moment of the week. Try it yourself and you will be surprised at the results: Your faith will be strengthened and the presence of God in your life will be much more noticeable. Your friend and servant ~ Father Jesus Camacho Dear Parishioners and Friends of Fr. John Worster: We are happy to invite you to celebrate Fr. John s 30th Anniversary of Ordination on Sunday, July 30. The event will take place in Fr. John s backyard from 3-6pm. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served, and we ask you to bring a pot lock dish to share. If possible, bring your own chair. For questions, call the parish office. PROJECT COMPLETE! I would like to finally say that my U.S Map project for St. Mary's School is completed. Thank you to everyone for the donations and the support.
