Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23-24, 2017 A Note from Our Pastor, Hearty thanks to the many people who have worked tirelessly for us to lift up our hearts and souls in praise of God for the birth of His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ: the Boy Scouts who set up our manger outside the church; the 8 th -graders from St. Agatha School who transported all the figures and delicately positioned them in that same manger; the members of our Art and Environment Committee who decorated the upper church and the chapel so beautifully; our Faith Formation students who decorated the Christmas trees up and down; our several choirs, cantors and instrumentalists who with Agata and Brian have been rehearsing for our Christmas Masses; Maggie Reardon and those working with her in organizing and directing the Christmas Pageant, and of course the children who participate in it; Meg Kaster, Kathy Keil, and Deacon Dan Sullivan for organizing a group of families and other parishioners who will be serving as greeters at the Christmas Eve Masses. Please note the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Mass Schedule on the cover of the bulletin. The one collection taken up at the Christmas Masses supports the Clergy Health and Retirement Fund for the priests of the Archdiocese of Boston. Thank you for your support, especially since we have 2 wonderful senior priests in Fr. Pat McLaughlin and Fr. Tom Powers here who serve our parish with such dedication and who benefit directly from this collection. As we celebrate the birth of our Savior this weekend, I want to share with you excerpts from a Christmas Homily of Pope St. Leo the Great of the fifth century, taken from The Liturgy of the Hours, volume 1. New York: Catholic Book Publishing Co., 1975, pp. 404-405: Dearly beloved, today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness. No one is shut out from this joy; all share the same reason for rejoicing. Our Lord, victor over sin and death, finding no man free from sin, came to free us all. Let the saint rejoice as he sees the palm of victory at hand. Let the sinner be glad as he receives the offer of forgiveness. In the fullness of time, chosen in the unfathomable depths of God s wisdom, the Son of God took for himself our common humanity in order to reconcile it with its creator. Christian, remember your dignity, and now that you share in God s own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition. Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God s kingdom. May you and all your loved ones have a blessed Christmas Season! Fr. Palardy Christmas ~ One Collection for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust This weekend is the diocese-wide collection to benefit the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust which cares for the needs of our 590 priests. Our priests are always there for us; they share Christ s good news, perform good works, and build communities of good faith. Your support helps care for their health and well-being in retirement. You can learn more about the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust and make a gift online at clergytrust.org. Follow us on Facebook @ClergyTrust. Thank you in advance for your prayers and support. Christmas Break Social for Young Adults On Friday January 5 th, from 6pm on in the Gathering Space there will be a get-together for college-age students and other young adults. The 2 young adults on our Parish Pastoral Council are working with several others to plan an evening of good food and lots of fun. Fuller details in next week s bulletin. Please call 617-698-2439 and we will arrange for a minister of communion to bring Eucharist to you.

St. Agatha Parish FEATURED WEEKLY READING THE WEEKLY UPDATE Milton Quincy THEME: God s Spirit comes to us in ways we least expect. As you hear this reading about Mary today, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you. But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. But Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no relations with a man? And the angel said to her in reply, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God. Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. Pastoral Planning December 24 ~ Fourth Sunday of Advent Today s Gospel is the wonderful story of the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. Over the years we have seen many artistic renditions of the Annunciation story. Take a moment today, before the festivities of Christmas get underway, to pray with your favorite image of this story and ask for Mary s help by praying the Hail Mary. Weekly Budget Dec. 16-17 In-Pew Collection Christmas is truly a special time in the year. It is a time to rejoice in the birth of our Savior and to give thanks to His Mother Mary for saying yes to God s call. It is a time to share memories of days gone by, and a time to renew our hope for the days ahead. It is a time to give of ourselves to family, friends, and those in need. It is also a time to give thanks for the many gifts God has bestowed on us. Here at St. Agatha Parish those gifts are manifold. When you look around you today consider how fortunate we are to have the beautiful worship space and the renovated lower level. Consider also the many people who give of their time and talent to make our experience of the Liturgy so meaningful. From the priests, to the various ministers, to the team that decorates and beautifies the Church throughout the year, we are so blessed to have this myriad of people who share their gifts with all of us. Then consider the people who so willingly give of themselves in the many ministries we have in the parish. The overwhelming response to this year s 26 th Annual Giving Tree Project is but one example of our faith community in action. We are also blessed by a wonderful school, an emerging Life Teen program and so many other signs of vibrancy. We are further blessed by talented and committed staff in both the parish and school who help the parish community to live out its mission each day. God is good. In addition to the good news below about exceeding our Weekly Offertory budgeted amount for the third consecutive weekend, there is also good news about the Grand Annual. The total continues to rise and as of December 19 th it stood at $140,453, bringing us ever-closer to our budgeted goal of $170,000. There is still time to contribute before the end of the year, so if you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, your participation is very much needed and would be most welcome. Thanks so much for your support of the parish.
