THE GREAT RIVER ROAD MESSENGER BALANCE Today's scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn't always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith.copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Run to Win Fr. Matthew McCaughey Fr. Brad is away from the parishes this weekend. He is participating in a 14-mile obstacle course called the Spartan Race. This is an intricate, organized challenge of strength and stamina. There is running, jumping, crawling, climbing, carrying heavy weight, and everything in between with mud aplenty. I asked him to record part of the event to post on the website. Please pray that he comes back in one piece. Fr. Brad s preparation and training increased this past month, and he kept bugging me to run with him. I normally run on a treadmill in the rectory. My exercise philosophy has changed over the years, but right now I can sum it up in one word: convenience. If it s not convenient, I m not going to do it. Some people drive to a gym or jogging path to exercise, but I m already on the road enough already. I ll stick with my treadmill, even if it s boring. Fr. Brad had invited me to run so many times I lost count. After perhaps 45 invites, I finally gave in. We started early enough, at around 6:30am. It was still dark out, so I wore a head lamp to light up the gravel path on top of the levee by. Running with someone is not my normal custom, so it took a mile to find a speed that worked for both of us. I thought I was doing pretty well, keeping up with Fr. Brad who has a much more intense exercise regimen. I was still feeling good about myself when it started to rain. I was a little peeved. I thought to myself, Really? I finally say yes to running on the levee and it rains? Fr. Brad said matter-of-factly, We can t teleport, so we just have to run the way home. There was motivation to finish strong, that s for sure. I bring this up because of our upcoming celebrations of All Saints and All Souls Days. On All Saints Day, we ask for our friends in heaven to pray for us. On All Souls day, we lift up prayers for those deceased who are still on their victory lap of purgatory. The Saints help us in this valley of tears, urging us on when perhaps we want to give up on ourselves. The Saints pray for us, and their lives are examples of fighting the good fight. It s no surprise that a repeated analogy in the New Testament for perseverance in the faith is running a race (See 2 Timothy 4:7 and Hebrews 12:1). If life is a race, we often focus on two things in the race: the finish line and the endurance needed to get there. All Saints Day reminds us that if life is a race, then there s a crowd watching the race, too. As you come to the All Saints Mass this week, remember that you are not running alone, that you have your brothers and sisters in Christ by your side, and you have your heavenly family cheering you home. Your Support of the BAA Meets Needs Throughout the Diocese A picture of your commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and your regard for others, parishioners from and Parishes have prayerfully made the Bishop s Annual Appeal a priority and that support is a great encouragement to your fellow parishioners, neighbors and friends. Our ability to address formidable challenges is possible because we serve as part of the great kingdom of God. I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you (Mt 17:20b). Moved by Faith, please pray about your participation in the BAA this year. Last week Bishop Meunch mailed a packet that includes helpful information concerning this year s campaign In it, we celebrate your generosity during a challenging year for the diocese, and ask how God might bless our Catholic community going forward. Please be a part of that effort by choosing to contribute to the Bishop s Annual Appeal today. If you didn t receive a packet, please contact the Office of Stewardship at (225)336-8790, or stewardship@diobr.org. Online donations may be made at www.baabr.org.
