We welcome, serve, and educate.

Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel story of this Sunday Jesus heals two people, the woman with the hemorrhage and the daughter of Jairus. Like Jesus, we are also called to be healers. This power of healing has been given to every believer in Christ. Our lives are continually touching the lives of other people. When we show sympathy we are healing a wounded heart. When we say an encouraging or comforting word we are healing a wounded spirit. With a little of our time we could ease the loneliness of someone. When we can reach out in healing to others, we are not just individual healers but building a community of healers. Yours Sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor Have you moved? Or changed your phone number or email address? Please let us know. We are updating our database and want to make sure the information we have in our database is accurate. 415 453-2342. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the "Military Vicariate." In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the "Archdiocese for Military Services, USA." Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a "schoolmaster," but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti -Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the "Nuns of the Battlefield" (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. CENTERING PRAYER Everyone is welcome! Prayer is when you talk to God; meditation is when you listen to God. Come Thursday mornings, 9:30-10:30, to Centennial Hall and experience how wonderful, peaceful, and contemplative Centering Prayer is. Please direct questions to Dolores O Halloran at 415-454-3496 AAA Archdiocese Annual Appeal 2018 $86,050 $62,747 Swimming and water are likely to be a big part of family fun during the summer. But the importance of safety cannot be overstated. Stay Safe In and Out of the Water Safety Tips for Children and Adults For Children: -Always watch your child (grandchild) while he or she is bathing, swimming or around water -Gather everything needed (towel, bath toys, sunscreen) before the child enters the water; if you must leave the area, take the child with you -Empty all buckets, bathtubs and kiddie pools of water immediately after use and store them upside down and out of your child's reach -Do not allow your child to play or swim in canals or streams -Install a 5-foot-tall fence with self-closing gate latches around your pool or hot tub -Consider installing door alarms to alert adults when a child has unexpectedly opened a door leading to a pool or hot tub -Keep a phone and life preserver near the pool or hot tub in case of emergency -Use snug-fitting life jackets instead of floaties, but remember that a child can still drown with a lifejacket on if not carefully watched -Become certified in first aid and CPR -Find age-appropriate swim lessons for your child, but keep in mind that lessons do not make your child "drown-proof" For Adults: -Always swim with a buddy -Never swim if you have been drinking alcohol or have taken certain medications -Learn how to swim; find swimming lessons at the local YMCA or park district -When boating, wear a life jacket Cursillo Weekend Women s Cursillo November 8-11 Men s Cursillo November 15-18 Cursillo, a Spanish word meaning a short course in Christian Living, is a unique retreat experience that is presented largely by lay individuals who share their Christian walk in life through a series of informal talks and discussions. It is open to adult men and women of all Christian denominations and provides an opportunity to reflect on values and goals as Christians. It is filled with music, great food, and tremendous humor. This year s Cursillo weekends will be held at the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo. Questions? Please email Cathy Cunningham at info@saintanselm.org. You get about 27,375 days on earth. Can you spare 3 of them with whom you ll be spending eternity?
