THE YEAR OF OUR LORD The Church Year is a cycle of seasons and feasts that makes present for us the saving action of Jesus life and ministry. The Temporal Cycle of the Church Year revolves around three great feast days that celebrate the Mysteries of Christ Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The seasons that connect these days are Advent, the Christmas Season, Lent, the Easter Season, and Ordinary Time. Advent Begins the 4th Sunday before Christmas in preparation for Christ s coming. The feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated during this season. Catholics around the world and throughout history have shaped their faith and marked their lives by these events. THE CHURCH YEAR IS MADE OF TWO CYCLES RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME: one cycle centers on the Mysteries of Christ; its seasons are Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time. the other cycle recalls those who have been sanctified by Christ the Blessed Virgin and the saints and martyrs. With one cycle the Church Year honors Christ. With the other cycle it honors those who followed him closely. The community of believers, the Church, keeps observing the Church Year because it celebrates God s work of redemption. When Catholics observe the Church Year s feasts and seasons, they learn the words and acts of God that have changed history; remember the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord for us; participate in the saving events through which our Lord creates his Church and transforms our lives. Christmas Season 2 weeks of celebration of Christ s birth, leading to Epiphany, the Christmas of the Gentiles, and the Baptism of our Lord. Ordinary Time Part 1 4 to 9 weeks between the Christmas Season and Lent. Lent Ash Wednesday followed by 40 days of preparation for Easter, concluding at the three days of the Triduum, the very center of the whole Church Year. 16

Ordinary Time Part 2 2 dozen weeks from Holy Trinity Sunday to Christ the King Sunday. The feast of All Saints is celebrated late in this season.

BLESSED are YOU The Beatitudes MATTHEW 5:1-12 When he saw the crowds,he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you. poor in spirit Poor in spirit means to be humble. Humility is the realization that all your gifts and blessings come from the grace of God. Humility brings an openness, allowing us to understand and to do the will of God. those who mourn We may mourn the loss of loved ones in our life. But Jesus is with us, especially at those times. Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to comfort us in our mourning. the meek The word meekness means having strength under control. That control is humility. Jesus said that if we wanted to be great in His kingdom then we would be servants. A willingness to serve is the definition of meekness. hunger and thirst for righteousness Those who hunger for righteousness are the ones that want to see justice and reconciliation in the world. They want to see people to live on good and just terms with each other and with God. the merciful To be merciful is to be compassionate and forgiving. In the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus asks the question as to whether or not the one who has received mercy should have shown mercy on his fellow servant. clean of heart With hearts made clean from the messiness of sin, we will be able to see God in all his beauty, splendor and holiness. peacemakers These are the followers of the Prince of Peace who reconciled men with God. They take seriously the ministry of reconciliation. They will be called the sons of God because they are acting and following the example of Jesus. those persecuted for righteousness There are parts of the world where people are being persecuted for Christ. For them, following Christ means suffering, rejection and even death. Jesus assures them of their heavenly reward. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. 18
