ABOUT THE REFORMATION READING PLAN

1 Gathered around a fire, the children of God would listen to their elders recite for them their family history as recorded in the Torah. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Moses helped to give us the first written form as Scripture moved from not just an oral tradition, but a written document. Johaness Gutenberg s invention of the printing press revolutionized who had access to the Scriptures, as did Martin Luther s translational work from Latin to the common man s language of German in the 1500 s. Today, the Bible has made the jump from oral, to written, to now electronic, available on a host of websites and apps. But all of this access does not mean that we know the Scriptures better. So let s change that. Join your brothers and sisters at FLC Towson and around the world as we read through the Bible together. We are celebrating the upcoming 500th anniversary of the reformation by being crafted by the truth of God s word.

2 WHAT TO EXPECT We celebrate the Reformation s 500th Anniversary with a call to the Word. This plan, as did the Reformers, accents: The Word alone-- Sola Scriptura A "gospel" order (the Bible organized according to which books most influenced the Reformers) Some grace each week The use of the latest communication technology (from Gutenberg to YouVersion!) It is going to be difficult. This may seem like a lot of reading if you do not typically read every day. (No, reading facebook does not count.) But I promise you, the reward will be amazing. HOW TO PARTICIPATE 1. Read the assigned readings for each day. a. Pick your favorite Bible. It can be your favorite on your shelf or you can purchase a new one just for this project if you would like. Try picking a bible that has no notes in it. Just read the Scriptures. b. Utilize an online Bible such as or download the Bible app from life.church / YouVersion. i. Online or through the app, search Reformation Reading Plan. Then you can personalize daily notifications. 2. Reflect on what God is saying. 3. Encourage others to participate. 4. Comment, discuss, and grow. a. 16 This logo takes many elements from Luther s seal, which is the most easily recognized symbol for Lutheranism. It was common in Luther s day for people to create a seal or coat of arms for their families, and that seal told the world what the family cared about or did for a living. It s no surprise, then, that Luther s seal was all about Jesus! At the center of Luther s seal, and at the center of the Reformation 2017 logo, is a red heart in the middle of a white rose. (The heart and rose together are commonly referred to as Luther s rose.) As Luther explained in one of his writings, The heart in the middle of white rose shows that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace. It immediately sets [the believer] into the midst of a white, joyful rose, not like the peace and joy the world offers. That is why the rose should be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and all angels. At the center of that rose is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Jesus is the center and Rock of our faith. He has been since He came to Earth in the flesh, and He still is today. The word still bears witness to the ever and ongoing relevance of this one, saving truth for sinners. 16
