FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE Special thanks to all parishioners who took a family tag off of the Christmas Sharing Tree last month. Please remember to return the gifts for the Sharing Tree next Sunday. God be with you and bless you for your generous support to those who will receive the gifts this Christmas. May all of us be aware of the opportunities, and respond with generosity, to bring joy to others in this Advent and Christmas season. We welcomed parishioners to the 5:00pm Mass on December 3 rd who were married in 1991. Happy Silver Anniversary to those who celebrated with us as well as all couples married this past year. May God continue to bless, guide and walk with you as you live your vocations as husband and wife. You are invited to participate in God s healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at one of three Advent Reconciliation services this coming week at our parish and at neighboring parishes. On Monday, December 5 th there will be a Reconciliation Service at Holy Cross in Deerfield at 7:00pm. A Reconciliation Service will take place here at St. Mary s on Tuesday, December 6 th at 7:00pm. There will also be a Reconciliation Service at St. Patrick s in Lake Forest on Wednesday, December 7 th at 7:00pm. Our three parishes are working together with the hopes that many parishioners will be able to join in these evenings of reconciliation, at your home parish or one of the neighboring parishes. Confessions will also be heard at St. Mary s this Wednesday evening beginning at 6:00pm. Each year we focus on Respect Life Issues during the month of October. We are all called to demonstrate respect for human life each and every day of our lives. As we prepare for and await the birth of our Savior there are steps you can take this week demonstrating your care for the unborn. The Catholic Conference of Illinois is inviting and encouraging you to speak your voice. The Illinois House may SOON vote to approve taxpayer-funded abortion. Call your state representative to urge him/her to vote NO on HB 4013. To find your state representative, go to www.ilcatholic.org, or call the Catholic Conference of Illinois at 312-368- 1066 or 217-528-9200. The 2016 national Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal is scheduled for next weekend December 10-11, 2016. Your support to this appeal assists religious communities care for senior members today and tomorrow. Thanks for your financial and spiritual support of the retired religious. Advent urges us to prepare for the coming of the Lord. The question comes down to this: while there wasn t room for Him in the inn, is there room enough in us in our hearts to receive Jesus? Advent challenges us to consciously prepare ourselves for His coming it calls us to love, to pray, to seek forgiveness, to make amends, to care for those most in need. Our challenge in these days is simply to live the lives we most want to but often don t, for whatever reason. It s time to make ready our hearts, and to invite and welcome the Lord, whenever He chooses to come. In the midst of our busy Advent days you are invited to slow down and focus on essentials in prayer and in faith! This Sunday evening, December 4th, people from across the Archdiocese will be attending a prayer service celebrating our new Cardinal, Cardinal Blase Cupich. Tickets are needed to attend the prayer service Sunday evening at Holy Name Cathedral. You can register at www.archchicago.org. May our prayers continue to support Cardinal Cupich as he leads our Archdiocese. God bless you as you prayerfully prepare for Jesus coming!

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO December 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Retirement Fund for The Religious Reflecting on the fruits of the Year of Mercy, many of us can recall the example of thousands of now elderly women and men religious who, for so many, were a living sign of God s mercy. These women and men Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests were indeed the hands of Christ as they educated the young, cared for the sick, and ministered to the neediest among us. Through their service, sacrifice and witness, they modeled the compassionate love of Jesus and showed us that we, too, could be instruments of peace and mercy. Today, many senior religious continue to be vessels of mercy, serving in a wide range of volunteer and prayer ministries. Others are frail and need assistance. Most older religious ministered for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. With the ever-rising cost of health care and the increased number of those needing care, many religious communities struggle to provide for aging members. On December 10-11, your parish will be conducting its appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an annual collection that benefits nearly 33,000 senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Your gift provides vital support for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious communities implement long-term retirement strategies that ensure both quality eldercare and continued service to the People of God. The people of the Archdiocese of Chicago have always led the nation in their generous response to this appeal. As not only a matter of justice to care for their needs, but also in thanksgiving for the lessons of mercy senior religious have shared with us, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich At this time of year, we want to thank all those who support the Soup Kitchen all year round! We can always be confident of a wonderful supply of meats, casseroles, side dishes, vegetables and fruits to serve our guests. Our numbers have been down a bit this year, but we are still serving almost 100 meals each month through your generosity. Your home-cooked specialties assure our guests of their value as our brothers and sisters. The time and care which you all put into making our effort possible is much appreciated we collect an awful lot of thank you s on your behalf. Typical of St. Mary s kindness, for our Thanksgiving service on November 18, 2016, we had plenty of food, and among the gifts were the most wonderful cupcakes but these were beyond clever! When I went to the Parish Center I found two pans of these little cakes disguised as tiny turkeys chocolate frosting [always a good start], with candy corn feathers, a peanut cookie face containing little eyes, a beak and a red wattle made from red string candy. I can only imagine the amount of time and care it took to put these little creatures together! They were a hit with everyone who saw them first with all our volunteers [who only got to look, not taste], and then our guests - not a crumb remained. Thank you, you very patient donors, not only for the cupcakes themselves, but also for the delight it brought to all of us. Our guests are very grateful for the lovely meal we serve them each month many thanks to all those who provide those meals and help to serve them. You are truly feeding the hungry! -Ellen Tierney

Or, do you spend your time, talent and treasure constantly acquiring more toys, clutter and junk. Our time, our talent and our treasure are gifts that God has given us. Second and Eighth Grade Service Project To celebrate the Feast Day of St. Martin de Tours, patron saint of soldiers, for their service project the second and eighth grade students remembered the men and women who served our country. Together, the students designed thank you cards that were delivered to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago. The second graders drew beautiful pictures for the cards, while the eighth graders wrote heartfelt messages of gratitude on the inside. Additionally, to honor our Catholic veterans the students brought in their spare change to support services to veterans provided by Catholic Charities. Service Opportunity at the Upper Grade Center Recently, Will Boyle, one of our 6th grade students, remarked on the amount of unopened, nonperishable food that was being thrown out in the UGC cafeteria each day. Will met with teachers and Mr. Wojdyla and explained his plan for collecting and distributing these unwanted food items. Will then met with Maribeth Roberti, founder of Roberti Community House in Waukegan. Roberti Community House offers after school support programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for children in the area. Maribeth was thrilled to hear that Will's plan may be able to provide snacks for this program. School of St. Mary 6th & 7th Graders Fall Sing Our talented, fun-loving, and enthusiastic 6th and 7th graders joined their voices in song to offer parents and friends a delightful slice of music class activities earlier this month. South African Freedom Songs, a collection of songs about a special four-footed friend, songs of faith, and songs of good were sung during the performance. The students did a wonderful job! Church of St. Mary Religious Education Fourth grade Religious Education students and their parents gathered for a special event in November to commemorate St. Catherine Labouré and the Miraculous Medal of Mary. Viewing the story of St. Catherine, students learned how our Blessed Mother appeared to Catherine giving her a special mission to have the Miraculous Medal made in her honor. They also learned how news about her visions of Mary and the Miraculous medal did not spread until after Catherine s death. Mary promised St. Catherine that all who wear the medal will receive many graces. Each 4 th grade student received a Miraculous Medal and their teachers were presented with a Miraculous Medal statue to use in the prayer space in their classroom. The Miraculous Medal reminds us of our Blessed Mother s love and protection.
