1 Sunday, December 31, 2017 - The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph It s boundary time again. Year s end a measure of time completing. The old calendar comes down, The new calendar goes up. Boundaries & Borderlands Life is lived on boundaries, Neither here nor there but everywhere. It is so many borderlands at once. It is of time in the mirror of eternity. The boundary line between new and old, night and day Is so often blurred, indistinct, and undefinable. The calendar of life Is full of boundaries and borderlands. Births and birthdays, deaths and anniversaries Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time. Halloween, All Saints and All Souls. The endless dichotomies of life, The sacred and the secular, The religious and political, Love, compassion, anger, hatred and forgiveness. There is a forever movement across boundaries. From the borderland of the divine to the human The human to the divine and darkness to light. Yes, across all boundaries to infinity, transcendence and eternal day. NEW YEAR S DAY MASS SCHEDULE This year the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is not a Holy Day of Obligation. The New Year's Mass schedule for the Solemnity is as follows: Monday, January 1, 2018 7 AM, 9 AM, 10:45 AM, 2 PM (Spanish) No 12:30 PM or 6 PM Masses No 11:15 PM Mass on New Year s Eve January 6, 2018 - Epiphany Ministry Appreciation Dinner and dance after the 5:30PM Mass on January 6, 2018 NEXT WEEKEND - EPIPHANY - ONGOING REVELATION OF THE HOLY: When God was revealed in the infant child in Bethlehem to the three kings, it was the beginning of an ongoing revelation of the Holy One among us. Our belief is that when we love one another as Jesus has loved us, we encounter the Lord in each other. The Mass as source and summit is an ongoing Epiphany - manifestation of the Divine Presence among us. In the Mass, God manifests Himself to us through His presence in the table of the Word and in the table of the Living Bread - the Eucharist. Parishioners are invited and encouraged to come occasionally to a daily Mass this year. Those who come regularly to daily Mass, come with a deep faith knowledge that God continues to reveal his Divine Presence through the table of the Word and the table of the Living Bread. The Mass is an ongoing Epiphany - the source and summit of our spirituality and the Christian faith. 300 RESERVED SPACES AT THE EPIPHANY DINNER & DANCE: Generous monetary sponsorships from various sponsors have made it possible for the parish to host parishioners active in the ministerial life of the parish to an Epiphany dinner and dance on Saturday, January 6th. All adult parishioners active in any of the many ministries in the parish during this past year are invited to join the 5:30pm Mass on January 6th in thanksgiving for the call of our Bethlehem King to serve Him in all our brothers and sisters. The dinner and dance will be hosted by our parish staff and school faculty and is sponsored by our Parish Ministries Council and our parish Stewardship & Development Council. An honor roll acknowledging parishioners who have completed a particular term of service in ministry or who are being recognized for their special contribution will be featured an upcoming weekend bulletin. Space availability is on a first come, first served basis. RSVP to the parish office at 747-1321 or use the RSVP form on page 4 of this bulletin. Our gratitude to our sponsors Watson Refrigeration, Diocese of Tucson Catholic Cemeteries, Bring s Broadway Chapel, and the Parish Endowment Trust for making it possible to have the parish host this special thank you Epiphany dinner and dance. JOAN MARTIN AND OUR PARISH HAITI PROJECT SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND: Joan is visiting her sponsoring parish during this time. During the Masses next weekend January 6-7, she will give a brief update on her ministry in Haiti and her oversight of our parish twinning project there. The scheduled second collection received at all Masses next weekend will be in support of Joan, our Haiti minister, and our Haiti project. Parishioners who may have missed the opportunity and who want to make a contribution, may use the special pew envelope to do so.

Come Home PERSONAL INVITATIONS TO ALIENATED CATHOLICS: The six evenings series with emphasis on God s mercy and reconciliation will commence in the Parish Activity Center on Monday, January 8th at 7pm then continue for five consecutive Monday evenings. The series offers an ideal process for reintroducing inactive Catholics to the active practice of their faith. Personal invitations from family members or friends of those who are inactive to participate in the series from past experience makes a very significant and positive impact. Family members and friends in those instances could become sponsors in this active outreach ACA and become servant leaders with and in God s grace. Brochures for this ACA outreach are available in the vestibule of the church. 2 Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection December 31, 2017 Feast of the Holy Family Luke 2:22, 39-40 The three verses of Sunday s Gospel in its short form tell us that the Holy Family Joseph, Mary, and their child, Jesus belonged to a people. They are not an isolated, nomadic unit or just a nuclear family, but part of a larger religious community that keeps the Law of Moses, centers its life in the Jerusalem temple, and practices long-held religious customs. They are Jews. Jesus is an oldest child in a Jewish family. Joseph and Mary fulfill the ancient custom of presenting an oldest child to God, a custom reaching back to Israel s beginnings as a people. The law of the covenant that makes them the people of God binds them to remember how God spared their firstborn on the night the angel of death killed every firstborn Egyptian and caused Pharaoh to free his Hebrew slaves. To present Jesus to God and purify Mary, the Holy Family makes a trip from Nazareth to the Jerusalem temple. Their religious practice centers in one place. Journeys to the temple for occasions like this and for the great festivals undoubtedly created a sense of belonging to the people of God. DID YOU KNOW One way to consider the holiness in families is what kind of holiness they may inspire or attract. Would you like to finish your Sacraments of Initiation, or make a Profession of Faith to the Catholic Church? Following are dates for the upcoming Adult Sacrament formation classes: Profession of Faith: This is a 12 week series for persons who are baptized, practicing Christians, and wish to be oriented to the sacraments and practices of the Catholic Church. Series is offered at 7pm, Tuesday evenings starting January 9, 2018 in the Parish Activity Center. Sacraments will be received at the Easter Vigil on March 31, 2018. Cost is $40 for materials. Call the parish office for more information and to register. Adult Confirmation: This is a 9 week series for Catholic adults who are lacking Confirmation. Series and is offered at 7pm, Tuesday evenings starting January 23, 2018 in the Parish Activity Center. Sacraments will be received at the Easter Vigil on March 31, 2018. Cost is $40 for materials. Call the parish office for more information and to register. ***What makes a family holy today? What sense of belonging to the church family do you have? The Knights of Columbus Regina Cleri Council #5133 is inviting parishioners of Our Mother of Sorrows to join in a prayerful Sunday afternoon on January 7th. Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary crusade prayer will be hosted by JR and Judith Perez at the Regina Cleri Council at 1330 S. Mountain View Ave. Prayers will start at 3:00 PM. Father Peyton once said, The Family that prays together stays together.

We are looking for anyone in the parish with landscape design experience to help us freshen up our campus appearance. We are seeking ideas for trees, shrubbery, cacti, and rock which are environmentally sustainable and beautify as only nature can. If you have this kind of background, please contact Steve Contreras at the parish office (520)747-1321. 4 In addition, we have a variety of projects which need carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and dry wall experience or just the willingness to lend a hand on a Saturday. This is a way to make a real, tangible difference to our parish and be a blessing to our parishioner and school families. Please contact Jose Reyes at the parish office at (520)747-1321.
