The breaking of oplatki - Christmas wafers - is a custom that began in Poland in the 10th century and is now one of the most beloved of Polish traditions. This practice is now popular in much of Central Europe and beyond. Before partaking of the Christmas Eve meal, the family gathers around the table. The eldest member holds a large wafer and breaks off a piece to begin the ritual. The remaining wafer is passed on to another member while a prayer for loved ones is said. This continues, with family members exchanging wishes for peace and prosperity, until everyone at the table has a piece of the wafer. Finally, the family members consume their share prayerfully. Oplatki are also sent along with Christmas cards to loved ones who are away from home, as well as being shared with pets and farm animals. Oplatki will be available at the Parish Office beginning in early December. The suggested offering per envelope is $3.00. Each envelope contains three wafers, two white and one pink, and an explanation of the meaning and traditions. Providing parishes with oplatki is one of the basic means of financial support for the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict of Oak Forest, Illinois. The sisters also provide the altar bread for our parish and are most appreciative of our support. For more information on the charism and ministry of the sisters, please visit: missionarysisosb.org. Mon., Nov. 27 Dn 1:1-6, 8-20; Lk 21:1-4 He noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. In purely monetary terms, the widow gives little. Jesus doesn t assess the currency s value but the size of the sacrifice. Proportionally, she gives lavishly. She contributes, despite her own need, with generous and pure intentions. She gives from her heart, not just her purse. She holds nothing back. She s likely equally unselfish with her time, attention, love, compassion, prayers and forgiveness. Her generosity prompts us to consider not how much we give, but also how and why. The widow doesn t give for show, but we benefit from watching and questioning what holds us back from giving extravagantly. Give me the grace, Lord, to offer you all I have. Tues., Nov. 28 Dn 2:31-45; Lk 21:5-11 See that you not be deceived. Jesus presents a bleak image of the events preceding his return. In addition to forewarning of wars, insurrections, earthquakes, famines and plagues, he cautions against deception in the form of individuals claiming to represent him. So-called Christians who promote nothing remotely Christ-like are easily identifiable. The greater threat lies in those who successfully deceive not only others but themselves into thinking their misleading teachings are righteous. They re not overtly heretical. Christianity is at the core of their message. Their intentions seem valid, but they use religion to divide, degrade or destroy. Duplicity triumphs when they and their followers see no contradiction in such behavior. When we choose to follow only Jesus teachings that advance our personal biases, we re only fooling ourselves. Make my words and actions truly representative of you, O Lord. Wed., Nov. 29 Dn 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Lk 21:12-19 By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Developing a solid relationship with the Lord and leaning Readings for the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time on him at all times readies us for unsettling situations. The Lord assures us that he s always present. Following his commands allows us to face the future with conviction and security, no matter what it may hold. God won t leave us to stand alone in fear or uncertainty. We re not guaranteed an easy path, but we can be confident that it won t be traveled alone. Only when we place our hope and trust in God can we be at peace. We will see beyond the tribulations of the present to the bigger picture of the promise of eternal life. Let us rest confidently in your protection, Lord. Thurs., Nov. 30 1 Rom 10:9-18; Mt 4:18-22 Andrew, Apostle He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him. God established a favorable foundation for this courageous and faithful encounter. The Galileans formed a vibrant religious community, well-versed in Scripture with great enthusiasm and reverence for its application. Many respected teachers came from Galilee, including Jesus who earned the distinction of rabbi. It was an honor for the rabbi to choose his followers as it indicated a belief that the select had great potential. Imagine the surprise of the lowly fishermen to be singled out in such a way. Their immediate response makes perfect sense; their entire existence yearned for this moment. May we be gracious and willing in answering the Lord s call. Friday, December 1, 2017 Dn 7:2-14; Dn 3:75-81; Lk 21:29-33 Praise and exalt him above all forever. The Canticle of Daniel is a heart-felt, full-throated, joy-filled song of praise. One can feel the elation even when it s read in a monotone but please don t do that. I m reminded of a shape note singers gathering an experience not to be missed. Singers sit in a square as each takes a turn as the leader, announcing the hymn and keeping the beat. What s most noticeable is that everyone participates. Everyone. There are no spectators at a shape note sing and every hymn is sung in four-part harmony at full volume. At a recent sing, after one rousing hymn, one man yelled out, This is better than Prozac! Singing, just to praise God, is not something we do often enough. It might be the closest experience of heaven on earth. Sing praise with heart and mind and soul sing praise Saturday, December 2, 2017 Dn 7:15-27; Dn 3:82-87; Lk 21:34-36 Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from the anxieties of daily life. I don t associate anxiety and drowsiness, but it makes sense that our hearts, as the center of compassion, might seem to sleep when we are overwhelmed by life s daily cares. My husband and I had the opportunity to take a vacation involving a couple of flights, negotiating several large cities, and about 1500 miles of train travel. I realized that in the rural Missouri town we call home we rarely think competitively arriving first, getting good seats, protecting our stuff. But where there are many people who are traveling it s hard not to think, Me first! We decided to mindfully avoid seeing others as potential rivals for the goodies of life, and instead, just enjoyed folks and even made a couple of friends. God of abundance, calm my anxious heart and teach me that there is always enough. Celebration Publications: CelebrationPublications.org

Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program 2017-2018 The Light of Christ was evident as the 2nd graders of the parish and their families gathered with Father Nacius and Deacon Bob Thomas for a Candlelight Service in church earlier this month. During the prayer service, everyone was reminded of the special celebrations in life when we use candles. The children then came forward with a parent to personally receive a lit candle with the words, "Receive the Light of Christ." After all the children had received their candle and as they encircled the church, they raised their voices to God as they sang, "This Little Light of Mine." It was a beautiful sight to behold and many families expressed how moved they were by the experience. Father Nacius reminded the 2nd graders they are on a special journey to receiving Jesus Christ in yet another very special way in First Eucharist this spring. GiveCentral Connect GiveCentral Connect is the new, smarter way for Church giving. The new Church app allows parishioners to make their donation at any time to the offertory collection, Christmas or any special collection, making mobile giving convenient. Giving is much simpler and practical. The app allows a parishioner to save time by simplifying the donation process. Donors can subscribe to preferred communications, edit and save their giving preferences or browse their giving history at any time. Download the app at: www.givecentral.org/gcdonor/ whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me MATTHEW 25:40 Most of us are generous when it s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it s not convenient; when it s not on our schedule, but on the other person s schedule.
