2 Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014 From the Administrator, Fr. James Merold My Dear People, Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. This poetic language of the great prophet Isaiah is meant to touch our hearts and to settle us down in these often hectic Advent Days. Remember our Advent Mantra: Receive The Gift Reject The Glitter Reflect The Glory! What are we to do in these Advent Days? The Good News of the Lord s coming should rouse us to action, clearing away all the junk and clutter that stands between us and God. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Make straight his paths! Oh, great - one more thing to do during the next 18 days! Actually, it is THE thing to do before December 24. OK - What can I (should I) do? Bring Comfort: - Visit a relative or friend in a nursing home. - Call someone who is having a difficult time. - Shop for the Giving Tree item for the needy. - Stop in for a daily Mass (Monday - Saturday at 8:15 a.m.) - Go to confession on Saturday, December 13 at 4:00 p.m. - Send a Christmas card to someone you haven t talked to for awhile. - Be pleasant to someone you would just as soon ignore. - Say a quick prayer for the person who just cut you off on the road. - Sacrifice a little give some money to the pastor or principal so they can help make someone s Christmas brighter. Even better, remain anonymous when you do it. - Send Christmas greetings to one of our former pastors or associates. - Reject the urge to leave Mass early. I think we all get the picture. Let s get on with our Advent resolutions. In Christ, Father Jim Merold

4 Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014 2014 St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree The St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree continues! This annual event offers our parish families opportunities to provide much-needed basic items to organizations serving needy individuals and families throughout our community. This year, we will be collecting and donating items for the following organizations: Aid for Women of Northern Lake County Serves women in need who are facing unexpected pregnancy and their children under the age of 2 years. Home of the Sparrow serves the community as a transitional shelter program providing housing and supportive services for homeless women and their children in McHenry County and Northern Illinois. St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 5 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception This Monday, December 8, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Feast Day is a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. It is also the patronal feast day of the United States. Mass will be celebrated at 8:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Retirement Fund for Religious Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have spent their lives ministering to others, often for little, if any, pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and health care. Your gift to the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious supports the day-to-day care of roughly 35,000 senior religious, providing necessities such as prescription medications and nursing care. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Give thanks for religious. A parishioner writes, We thank God today and every day for every religious sister who taught us in school, not only our ABC s, but also to love God. Share your gratitude for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. Please give generously to next week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Families and the Gospel Second Sunday of Advent Why is it so hard to forgive, yet so easy to get even? Christmas Wafers Oplatki Available The Christmas Wafer, called Oplatki in Polish and Oblatek in other Slavic languages is a custom that comes to us from the Old Country. The custom of the wafer goes back many centuries. In olden times, and still today among those who maintain family traditions from the Old Country, a special meal would be eaten at sundown on Christmas Eve. A wafer is placed at each setting. At the beginning of the meal, each person would ask the others at the table to forgive him or her for the many offenses committed against them. As a token of the forgiveness, the person would take a piece of the petitioner s wafer. After all had made their peace with on another, the pieces of wafer are eaten. The Christmas wafers are available at the back of church. There are 3 wafers per packet (two white and one pink). A donation to help defray the cost is very much appreciated. You may place your donation in the envelope provided and place it in the collection basket. Thank you. May the peace of Christmas come to all who read this so that Christ may truly find a home in their hearts! Church website: www.stbedechurch.com

10 Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014 Christmas Remembrance The Advent season is filled with hopeful anticipation looking forward to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate, flowers and festive decorations become an important part of our homes, as well as our church environment. It is also a time when we most miss family and friends who have gone before us here on earth. In their lifetime, they gave us a gift of themselves and now, we can remember them by making a donation for flowers in their name as they continue to remain alive in us, especially during this Christmas season. The names of those you wish to be remembered will be published in the January 11th bulletin. To participate, please fill out the form below and return it with your donation, per memorial, by Monday, December 29th. Donations may be deposited in the Sunday collection (please place in an envelope marked "Christmas Remembrance"), or the envelope may be dropped off at the rectory during office hours. Please make checks payable to St. Bede Church. Thank you. Christmas Remembrance (please print) In Memory of Donated by OUR BEAUTIFUL CHURCH This statue of Mary stands outside in the Marian Meditation Garden. It was donated in memory of Thomas Leo Neuroth by his Grandmother Rose Ann Gilbert. On December 8th we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This holy day is nine months before the feast of the Nativity of Mary on September 8th. The Immaculate Conception was first celebrated in the western church in the 8th Century. It was proclaimed a Holy Day of Obligation on December 6, 1708 by Pope Clement XI. December 12th is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Pope John Paul II entered the celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (December 9th) into the General Roman Calendar in 2002.
