St. Mary on the Hill September 18, 2016 The Priority Planning Listening Session in the cafeteria /gym facilitated by Fr. Gary Kastl The session will include interactive, facilitated discussions in small groups during which the participants will be asked to identify: 1. What our faith community does well 2. Three priorities we should consider over the next 3 years 3. What we would like the parish to look like in 3 years The parish staff is getting nervous that no one is going to show up for the listening session on Tuesday night. They are anxious to know how many people to prepare for, so it would be very much appreciated if you called the parish office, if you plan on attending and have not communicated this to the office. Unfortunately, as a faith community I think we ve gotten into the bad habit of not committing until the last minute but I have faith that it is all in God s hands and the people who should be there, will be there. Surveys show that one of the prime dangers for Christians today is getting so busy that they lose their spiritual focus. Surveys also show that much of our busy-ness these days is caused by a lot of wasted time in front of our screens. So on Tuesday night instead of looking at Fr. Michael s latest post on Facebook, I would urge all active parishioners to participate in this important meeting so that we will have a clear focus as we move into our second century as a parish. Come and bring your ideas. And please pray for the success of this gathering. This Monday Morning I will be making a special Holy Hour (7:30 am to 8:30 am) at the Adoration Chapel that all of our hearts will be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our Priority Planning Process. I welcome parishioners to join me in prayer. St. John Paul II in his Apostolic Exhortation (January, 1999), Ecclesia in America, reminded us, The parish is a privileged place where the faithful concretely experience the Church. Today in America as elsewhere in the world the parish is facing certain difficulties in fulfilling its mission. The parish needs to be constantly renewed on the basis of the principle that the parish must continue to be above all a Eucharistic community. This principle implies that parishes are called to be welcoming and fraternal, places of Christian initiation, of education in and celebration of the faith, open to the full range of charisms, services and ministries, organized in a communal and responsible way, capable of utilizing existing movements of the apostolate, attentive to the cultural diversity of the people, open to pastoral projects which go beyond the individual parish, and alert to the world in which they live.... The institution of the parish, thus renewed, can be the source of great hope. It can gather people in community, assist family life, overcome the sense of anonymity, welcome people and help them to be involved in their neighborhood and in society... Today the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. This year we focus on the theme Prayer: The Faith Prayed. Those who our Faith Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. In a special way we reflect on the important role that parents play in the faith formation of their children. Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to continue to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. interrupting his journeys in order to spend long hours alone in prayer to his heavenly Father. They were moved to ask him to teach them how to pray. May we be moved this year to do the same as an essential element of our discipleship. May we all draw closer to the Lord and to one another through a deeper and more faithful commitment to prayer, in private and with others, in communion with the sacramental life of the Church. Jesus warns his followers today against allowing money to become their master. They must use money in an intelligent and responsible way. You are probably learning to handle money. What do you do with the money you are given? Do you save some of it? Do you put some into the collection basket at church? How do you use your money to care for others?
