4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 29, 2012 A REPORT FROM YOUR PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL wide range of viewpoints. The Parish Accountant, Parish Business Manager, and School Principal also attend meetings as the need arises. In this bulletin you will notice that we have begun to provide weekly collection figures as well as a comparison with our parish's budgeted weekly need. We also want to take this opportunity to give you an overview of the Parish Finance Council. An important function of the Finance Council is to provide an annual report to parishioners regarding the financial position of the parish. For the most recent fiscal year, which ended this past June 30, the Finance Council prepared an eight page Annual Report providing a review of the parish s activities and other information as well as a summary of financial information. As mentioned, more detailed financial information is available on the parish website (sjcnj.org). The role of the Parish Finance Council is to help the parish fulfill its mission. The Finance Council, which meets monthly (or more frequently as needed), does this in various ways. It advises the pastor concerning all financial matters, it works to maintain the financial wellbeing of the parish, it reviews major parish expenditures and suggests cost savings procedures, it assists the parish's independent accountant and pastor in preparing the budget and financial reports required by the Archdiocese, and it engages in long term financial planning. These responsibilities are described at length in the Council s Articles of Understanding. The Parish Finance Council represents one level of oversight of our parish s finances. In addition to the Finance Council, the parish employs an independent certified public accountant, Mr. John McGovern, whose firm is located in North Arlington, NJ. Parish financial accounts, operations, and controls are also periodically reviewed by the Parish Internal Audit Department of the Archdiocese of Newark. Your Parish Finance Council can be contacted via email (financecouncil@sjcnj.org) The Finance Council consists of the pastor, the Director of Operations, and nine parishioners who each serve a three-year term. Three members are replaced each year thereby giving the parish the benefit of a continuing stream of new Council members with new insights. The members represent a diversity of backgrounds and experiences thereby providing the Council with a broad set of skills with which to fulfill its responsibilities and a The names and brief background information of each of the members of the Finance Council appear below and on the following page of this bulletin. Parish staff are adequate in number, appropriately trained and willingly collaborate in achieving parish goals. Councils and committees are effective. Leadership is shared among clergy and laity, calling for visioning, planning, empowerment and assessment. 1. Develop a culture of broad-based participation in parish leadership organizations to inspire parishioners to share their talents. Continue to assess the quality of lay leadership. Personally invite parishioners to leadership and provide training. Develop leadership term limits for ministries/committees. Establish a succession planning process for parish/ministry leaders. 2. Communicate regularly and effectively with all parishioners about parish goals, rationale for decisions and the accomplished results. Share the plans of ongoing/future parish projects and their financial requirements. Publish an annual report of the parish. Effectively use email blasts or other social media. Create a communication plan to inform/educate about parish vision and goals. Create a parish marketing committee. Determine effective means to reach the tech-savvy parish groups. Enhance communication by assessing the attitudes and perceptions of parishioners and school families. To be continued next Sunday s Bulletin 5

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Mark Chapter 1 verses 21-28. On the Sabbath Day (which lasts from Friday evening until the stars appear on Saturday evening) Jesus went to the synagogue to pray. There he began teaching the people and they were amazed because he spoke to them of God in a way that no one else had ever done. He was interrupted by a man who was possessed by an evil spirit. The man shouted Jesus of Nazareth, do you want to destroy us? I know you are the holy messenger from God. Everyone was afraid. Jesus responded Be quiet spirit and come out of him. Leave this man in peace. With that the man shook and with a loud cry, the evil spirit left the man. From then on Jesus became known as the Holy One because of his authority and power over evil. NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9 am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/ Mary s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. If you are interested in helping with this committee, you can contact us at (kids@sjcnj.org). 6 NOTE TO KIDS Be sure to use your special envelopes in the Sunday Collection. You can get extra envelopes during the Liturgy of the Word With Children. Just ask Fr. Tom. MISSION OF THE WEEK I will ask Jesus to help me to do GOOD and not evil.
