2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Last Friday Queen of All Saints Parish began nine days of prayer to Saint Peter Calungsod or San Pedro Calungsod under the sponsorship of the Filipino American Community Association of our parish. It is the second year Queen of All Saints is offering this novena in honor of San Pedro. The novena of prayers here at Queen of All Saints is going on now and concludes on April 9. The schedule of the novena can be found in the bulletin. San Pedro is a patron of young people, of catechists and of Filipinos. Last year it was especially edifying to see so many young people from the parish assuming leadership roles in the novena. Many participated and others were lectors and leaders of the prayers and songs at the services. I am so very grateful to the Filipino American Association of Queen of All Saints Parish for bringing the life and saintly example of San Pedro to our attention and for inviting us to participate in the novena. A novena is a religious devotion of popular piety which consists in a series of prayers repeated for nine successive days. Novenas are most commonly dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under one of her many titles, but they can be dedicated to particular saints as well. The novena to San Pedro Calungsod honors a newly-canonized saint who was only 17 years old when he suffered martyrdom for the Catholic faith. Let me tell you a little more about San Pedro. He was born in Cebu in the Philippines in 1654. He learned the catechism and volunteered to accompany the Jesuit fathers in their missionary journey to Guam. He became a catechist himself and taught the truths of the Catholic faith alongside the missionaries. Their initial success was met by hostility among the native and pagan priests who feared losing their influence over the people. He was killed in an ambush while trying to defend Father Diego Luis de San Vitores, the missionary who brought him to Guam. During his beatification ceremony in the year 2000, Saint John Paul II said in his homily: From his childhood, Pedro Calungsod declared himself unwaveringly for Christ and responded generously to his call. Young people today can dream encouragement and strength from the example of San Pedro, whose love of Jesus inspired him to devote his teenage years to teaching the faith as a lay catechist. Leaving family and friends behind, Pedro willingly accepted the challenge put to him by Father Diego de San Vitores to join him on the mission to the Chamorros. In a spirit of faith, marked by strong Eucharistic and Marian devotion, Pedro undertook the demanding work asked of him and bravely faced the many obstacles and difficulties he met. In the face of imminent danger, Pedro would not forsake Father Diego, but as a good soldier of Christ preferred to die at the missionary s side. Pedro was beatified by Saint John Paul II 2000 and canonized a saint by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. The Archdiocese of Chicago has a shrine to San Pedro Calungsod at Old Saint Mary s Parish. Many of our parishioners have made a pilgrimage to that shrine since it opened a few years ago. I want to invite all parishioners of Queen of All Saints to learn of San Pedro and to ask him to intercede on behalf of our young people and our catechists, two of our most treasured resources. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 19 For Christian people, hope is rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Even though many more Catholics come to Mass on Easter Sunday than on any other Sunday of the year, the Lord s resurrection is celebrated at every Mass. The Paschal Mystery Christ s work of redemption accomplished by his Passion, Death and Resurrection is made present in every Eucharistic Liturgy, especially Sunday Mass. Most people would rather be hopeful than hopeless. God knows there s enough going on in our world to tempt us to despair. But belief in the resurrection of Jesus gives us a firm foundation upon which to build our own prudent hope that we also will be raised on the last day. He told Martha, I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even though he dies, will live forever. Attendance at Mass every Sunday encourages and strengthens that hope. March 2016 A Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Eileen Burchby Lambert Stegmaier. Mrs. Stegmaier, known while here as Mrs. Lambert, was a devoted teacher at Queen of All Saints School for many years. It was her wish to assist individual needy students who are attending Queen of All Saints School. The Eileen Burchby Lambert Stegmaier Scholarship will be open to all seventh grade students, and will provide a full tuition scholarship for eighth grade. The criteria for awarding this scholarship will be based on financial need, Catholic values, and academic excellence. A committee of school administrators and clergy will review the criteria and select the awardee. The recipient of the scholarship will be announced in Spring 2016. If you wish to nominate your seventh grade student attending QAS for this scholarship, please contact the school office for an application form. Frequently Asked Questions & How to Support the UPP What is the UPP? UPP stands for the United Parish Program. It has been the Queen of All Saints parish program for 30 years and has undergone several modifications over the course of time. The year 2006 marked its biggest changes to date. We moved the party to an elegant tent on the Basilica lawn and named it the Field of Dreams, introduced a more extensive Live and Silent Auction, enjoyed a sit-down dinner and danced the night away. Why should I participate? This is your parish s ONE AND ONLY parish fundraiser. No Friday night fish fries, no Market Day, no spaghetti dinners, no nuts, candies or gift wrap for your child to sell just a one night package of serious fundraising wrapped in a big bow of fun! What are the goals of the UPP? The goals of the UPP are to raise money for the Parish and to further unite the Parish community. We recognize the ability to give can fluctuate from year to year but hope that everyone in the parish will be as generous as possible to keep our wonderful parish moving forward this year. Through everyone s incredible generosity, we raised $296,330 in 2015. We project that $275,000 will be needed from the UPP to balance the Parish operating budget. The budget includes the maintenance and repair of our fifteen acre campus and its five beautiful buildings. It supplements the cost of worship supplies in the Basilica. In education, along with the endowment, it helps pay the tuition of all our school children In addition, the parish invests the religious education of 1000 school and religious education students. This fundraiser also helps support our forty ministries, social events, Lent and Advent offerings, and the services given by parish organizations. How can my family financially contribute? It is critical for every parish family to financially participate in the United Parish Program at some level. The fundamental key to QAS financial success is the UPP Raffle. We are asking every parish family to sell or buy $250 of raffle tickets. The tickets are $50 each or 6 for $250. Of course, we appreciate any contribution. Secondly, parish sponsorships at various levels are another way to contribute to the UPP. Sponsorships include special recognition in the ad book. Archangel Sponsor - $10,000 Angel - $4,000 Fleur-de-lis - $2,000 Diamond Sponsor - $1,000 Platinum Sponsor - $251-$500 Gold Sponsor - $101-$250 Parish Sponsor - $1-$100 Thirdly, buying an ad in our UPP Ad Book handed out at the event is a great way to reach a large, targeted audience for your business while making a meaningful contribution to QAS. Families can buy ads in the UPP Ad Book too. Many families include family photos with a special message acknowledging milestones like birthdays, 1st communion or 8th grade graduation. Contact Julie Crabtree at jcrabtree@kbholdings.com for more information. In addition to the items the auction gathers, we ask parish and school families to ask for charitable donations from your personal and business contacts for the live and silent auctions. Donors will be gratefully acknowledged in our program book. Contact Erika Marino at rickylew100@hotmail.com to donate an item. Our wish list includes but is not limited to: Once in a life time experiences Select seating for professional and college sporting events Blackhawks, Sox, Cubs, Bulls, Bears and PGA signed Items Bat kid, Ball kid, etc. for our Chicago teams Vacation homes, Hotel rooms Airline Miles, American Express Points for travel Concert tickets, back stage passes, parking or transportation All-Inclusive child birthday parties, camps and enrichment classes Talk show tickets Certificates to restaurants and retailers Finally, attend, sponsor or host an adult, kid or family-friendly party. UPP guests will be able to sign up and pay a fee to attend your special gathering. You can partner with another family or families for even more fun! Sign-up parties are great because they build community, enhance friendships and raise money for the parish and school. Contact Mira Gundlach if you are interested at mira.gundlach@icloud.com. f tewardship Committed to Christ, Queen of All Saints Basilica sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Second Sunday of Easter April 3, 2016 St Baldrick s Fundraiser for childhood cancer March 17 Just over 100 students participated as shavees or through hair donations in this year's St Baldrick's Fundraiser for childhood cancer. They surpassed last year's effort by raising $35,000. Thanks to the kids, thanks to our volunteers, and thanks to our generous donors! Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. John 20:21 Peace the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world to share His peace and Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. We should look for opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and sisters not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive the peace of Christ.
