John 6:51 THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Seven August 9, 2015 A New Fundraiser We are, as every parish, always in need of money to continue the work of proclaiming the Gospel and in meeting the many demands of charity. We have instituted a new program that will be a simple fundraiser that all of you with computers can help with and which is as easy as pie. Goodsearch.com has provided over $ 11 million to various charities since its inception. Every time you search for something like the location of a store or the name of an actor, a penny will be credited to the parish. Simply go to goodsearch.com and click on Find a cause to support and enter St Vincent and scroll down to find St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Akron, Ohio. You may then sign in (not absolutely necessary) and whenever you search you ll be automatically contributing to our parish. You will also find coupons available for other online shopping (called GoodShop) which will also contribute. I ve used this for years at St. Robert and St. Ambrose and we re now signed up here at St. Vincent. I can t think of a time when I haven t found what I m looking for. It works, please consider it. Thanks, Fr. Dennis McNeil KABALE DIOCESE MISSION APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend we welcome Fr. Julius Turyatoranwa who will be speaking on behalf of the Kabale Mission Appeal. Kabale Diocese is one of the 19 dioceses of Uganda, situated in the rural extreme southwestern corner of the country-about 280 miles from the capital city (Kampala). The diocese borders Rwanda on the South West and the Democratic Republic of Congo on the western side and serves a population of 1,500,000 people, of whom approximately 700,000 are Roman Catholic. We are seeking assistance for our long-term Kabale Diocese Orphaned and Vulnerable Children Program. Through our foster home care program, we provide out-reach support to orphaned children the vast majority of whom have lost both parents and are left all alone to fend for themselves. We provide them with school tuition, clothing, and healthcare. We are currently supporting 370 children out of well over 20,000 greatly in need of help. We are also in need of support toward Rushoroza Health Center which Kabale Diocese is in the process of constructing. This health center will serve a critical need because of its location in a rural area that serves mostly the poor, and an area that continues to grapple diseases such as malaria, typhoid, HIV/Aids, TB, among others. These lifethreatening diseases continue to claim a lot of lives, given also that the area has a ratio of one doctor/3000 people. Once completed, Rushoroza Health Center will serve a population of about 700,000 people and will also extend it s services to our next door neighbors in Rwanda since we are located at the Uganda/Rwanda border. We hope that you will give generously to this Mission Appeal. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SUMMER!! Every year after The FEST we receive a ton of emails from those who were there telling us how much they enjoyed our annual Catholic Family FESTival and how it was the highlight of their summer. It can begin a journey that we did not choose to take but, when shared with others, can often help us heal and grow. St. Hilary s Parish, 2750 West Market Street, along with Ciriello & Carr funeral Homes, are happy to offer the Companions on a Journey: Support during Grief and Loss series. It will be held on Thursdays at 6:30pm- 8:30pm in the Spiritual Center Lower Level Meeting Rooms on Aug. 13th, Aug. 20th, and Aug. 27th. All are welcome!
