PREFACE BY RICHARD A. PRICE Albany, Oregon July, 2010 Ths book has been a source of valuable genealogcal nformaton snce my Dad gave me a copy a number of years ago. As t was never formally publshed and only twenty eght copes were produced, I decded to make ths nformaton more wdely avalable to the publc by creatng ths edted and dgtzed edton. The orgnal nformaton was a lttle hard to follow, so I have restructured t n a manner that makes the flow of famles much easer to dscern. The orgnal format has been retaned, but each descendant of the three famles s assgned a number whch makes t easer to fnd where they are lsted as a chld and where they are lsted as a parent. Some changes have been made to correct logcal nconsstences. Ths book was wrtten before the nternet was avalable. Much more nformaton on these famles can probably be found. For the on-lne edton, I have ncluded the vtal statstcs only for persons who have been born n the last seventy-two years whch s the census standard, unless ther deaths have been documented. As future edtons are released, I wll nclude ths nformaton as well as the results of addtonal research. Informaton added by myself wll be talczed. Greetngs: 417 West Park Street Lvngston, Montana 59047 July, 1967 Heren s a complaton of almost three years research. Addtons may be made. I am ndebted for research done by the James McKnley, Rchard Anderson Jeffres, and Joseph famles; to genealogst Wllam C. Smth of Washngton D. C, Mrs. Eddleman of Sprngfeld, Kentucky, Mrs. Botts of Columba,, 26 relatves, and other sources for data receved. Most states do not have records pror to 1900 or ther staffs are such that they have no tme for genealogcal research. Census 1840 n Russell County, Kentucky: Solomon McKnley: Males 2 under 5, 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 30-40, female 1 10-15, --page 23. James McKnley: Males 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 40-50, females 1 15-20, 1 20-30, 1 50-60. Peter McKnley: Males 2 under 5, 2 5-10, 1 30-40, female 1 30-40. Lbrary, Carroll County, marrages (1833-1852) Hazel McKnley, by Eljah Jeffres. Putnam Co, Atlas (1877) Quntas McKnley settled 1850. He, and D. P. Arsssa each wed n Putnam Co. The James McKnley famly appears to have mgrated from Kentucky to about 1850. Russell Co. Kentucky advsed that James McKnley operated a ferry there on the Cumberland Rver n 1837. Also Anderson Jeffres (Rchard Anderson Jeffres) wed Harret McKnley there. The marrage bond could not be found. Rchard Anderson Jeffres tme and places of resdence are elusve. Except of hs mltary servce there are not records of where he lved after hs marrage untl 1870 census of Bates Co.. Thereafter he lved n varous places n except for a short tme n the state of Washngton. To ths date the parents and ancestors of Joseph have completely evaded each and every source of nqury and nvestgaton. Genealogst Smth stll searchng. Genealogst Smth says dscrepances n the records of ancestors s not uncommon. When the research was completed a prnter examned t for the purpose of publshng a book. He advses that a book s qute expensve and that typed and coped pages n a bnder are much better. I have over 2400 sheets prepared n 28 bnders to be maled. Hope somethng of nterest s present n ths bnder. Sncerely P.S. Comments requested Charles Everett Jeffres

CHAPTER TWO: RICHARD ANDERSON JEFFRIES - BACKGROUND Sprngfeld, Kentucky 40069 October 21, 1966 Mr. C. E. Jeffres 417 West Park Street Lvngston, Montana, 59047 Dear Mr. Jeffres: I am so sorry so many thngs have kept me from fnshng the materal I started for you on the famles you want researched here. I thnk you wll agree the search has been farly successful. There seemed no way to prove here what I thought to be the famly lnes. Early n the summer, Mrs. Berley from Greensburg, a Kentucky Hghway researcher checkng deeds for the state, came to Sprngfeld, and I met her. I asked about Jeffres materal n her area, and she offered to lend me a book by a deceased frend of hers who dd much work on some of your famles. Ths book was prvately publshed - just a few copes - after the death of the lady who dd the work but dd not lve to complete t. Her famly fnshed t. I have coped the chapters referrng to your ancestors, JEFFRIES & Pettts. There s also a descendant of Eljah Jett and Rhoda Gordon, who has done some research. I have coped what she has, and t s some facts and some tradtons. She sent data on the Owens famly. I had not known that Thomas Pettt and Hgh Gordon were brothers-n-law, havng marred Nathanel Owens daughters. The gven name Nathanel appears n the Jeffres and also the Campbell famles (note Thomas Pettt data). Many of the famles were related neghbors n Vrgna countes and doubtless came together to Kentucky. All seem to have been Baptsts and were together n Bethlehem Church, formed 1805. I beleve Eljah Jeffres and Joel Gordon were both ordaned there. Most of the Kentucky lfetme of Anderson Jeffres was spent n Washngton County, and I thnk he lved only a short tme n Hardn after movng there. A tombstone for A. JEFFRIES s n the Glead Churchyard n Hardn County. A frend of ours here, Shelton Jeffres, was there once searchng for famly clues. Shelton does not descend from Anderson Jeffres but from a Nathanel Jeffres here, closely related, I am sure, and lvng n same area. You wll note that only Thomas Pettt Jeffres remaned n Kentucky, and he was the ancestor of the wrter of the book quoted. The locaton of the marrages of Eljah s chldren, are gven; also Eljah and Elzabeth (2nd wfe) s gravestes. I am told by Shelton Jeffres that hs mother sent the old Famly Bble to to a relatve to copy, and never got t back. But I feel sure ths s not concerned wth the Eljah Jeffres famly. Your marrage bond and letter from the Clerk, are enclosed wth ths materal. Also, I am sendng addtonal forms for the famles, whch you may lke to complete from your own nformaton, and for your fles. Hope you enjoy the data. If you want copes of documents n Washngton County, I wll try to arrange for these through our Clerk. Wll apprecate your comments, and try to answer any queston n our County. The fee for the research and copyng s $10, and I am sorry for the great delay. Sncerely yours, LOUISE R. EDDLEMAN (Sgned)

He obtaned from Rchard Henry Lee a tract of land on the Western Slope of Watery Mountan, about two-and-one-half mles from Warrenton, Vrgna. Ths famly had lved n Prnce Wllam, Kng George, and Stafford Countes, Vrgna. Joseph Jeffres, a brother of George, came wth hm and lved near George. Joseph Jeffres had several chldren. Chapter Two: Rchard Anderson Jeffres - Background A C O P Y of Letter from CLYDE GORDON, MISSOURI Sent to Louse R. Eddleman by Mrs. Elzabeth Jett Skaggs, Doddsvlle, I have another Owen lsted n Fauquer County, Vrgna - Bethel Owen to Elzabeth Owen, 12-17-1787. A Mrs Cory of Lttle Rock, Arkansas, 1933...gave me these records whch she got from Mrs. MattIe R. Davs of Lexngton, Kentucky, a descendant of NOAH GORDON, a brother of Rhody. Sarah Owen was probably much older than Rebecca. From Clyde Gordon s letter... Also n Fauguer County, Vrgna, records are Jeremah Owen and wfe Jane. Hs wfe was probated Aug 23, 1773; and a Joshua Owens and wfe AMELIA (Kenton) sster of Smon Kenton, well known poneer and Indan fghter. I do not know how these Owens are related to NATHANIEL OWENS, Sr. Nathanel Owens, Jr. was a brother of SARAH OWENS who marred Hugh Gordon. I thnk there was another famly of Gordons not related to ours n Vrgna and must have come to about the same regon of Kentucky about the same tme. Old Eljah Gordon came to and s bured n Polk County, and my grandfather was 25-30 years old before Eljah ded, so he knew a lot about the famly. It was handed down about Hugh comng over, worked hs way on a freghter, and that there was another one here. My Aunt, ded 1949, told about the area, IVOR, a county, town or some area n Scotland, but I have not found a map to see f there s or was such a place. It s sad to be about 100 mles north of Glascow, Scotland. The older Gordons have used the en speelng as Gorden, but most others wrte t Gordon, unless told otherwse. There are records of Owens at Greensburg, Green Co., Kentucky and some of the Gordons also. I thnk Nathanel Owens, Jr. s bured at Greensburg. The frst sherff of Green Co., was Nath Owens, a farmer of good educaton for the tmes, acqured consderable wealth. He bestowed great attenton to the educaton of hs chldren, sent them from home to the best schools, and he was among the earlest poneers of Green County. He acted for a tme as Justce of Peace and also Judge of Court, prevous to 1801. He ded about 1846 on Lttle Bush Creek, 80 years old, and s bured there. (Part of ths, you see, s hearsay, but snce t mght come n handy wll just copy most of the Clyde Gordon letter...). Have heard that Hugh came over when 12-15 years old from Scotland and that hs father s name was also Hugh. He settled on the James Rver n Vrgna, was n Fauquer County, and then Kng George County; marred Sarah Owens n Kng George Co., and moved to Kentucky around 1788-1790. My ancestor was Eljah born 1788 n Vrgna. Ths Eljah Gorden s bured n the Gorden Cemetery 5 or 6 mles south east of Halfway,. Noah Gorden, an older brother, s bured 1 1/2 mles south west of Bolvar,. Joel Gorden s name shows up here n, but not sure f he s Eljah & Rhody s brother. Hgh s supposed to have had 12 chldren and I have only 10, an not all of ther brths. Betsy marred a Barlow: Anne wed a Tyree; (there are some Tyrees n North ). Rhoda marred a Jett; Salle wed a Whtman; Molly (nckname for Mary) wed a Jeffrees Frances: Noah marred Nancy Bartlett, born 5-8-1799-ded 1865; Wllam; Joel was born 6-17-1783; Eljah born 8-29-1788-ded 2-20-1862, marred Stata Ann Gootee. He was my Gr-Grandfather. Connectng Hugh as 1st generaton n ths county, I am then #6 born 5-19-1897. Eljah, Samuel, Joseph H., Wllam Henry, and me. from Clyde Gorden Page 15

Genealogy of James McKnley, Rchard Anderson Jeffres and Joseph MY BRADHSAWS AND THEIR ALLIED FAMILIES By Carre Bradshaw Boln Chapter MY PETTIT FAMILY (Pages 76 through 80) The PETTIT famly s a very old Norman famly recorded at Meaux, n Normandy as early as 650. They were known as the Pettts of the Mlls and the Pettts of the Moors. Some were manufacturers, others were farmers. When Wllam the Conqueror nvaded England, many of the Pettts joned hs army. He burned hs vessels to prevent ther return to Normandy, therefore the Pettts remaned n England where they became prosperous. Many were knghted and several marred nto Royalty. Heavy taxes were mposed upon the people of England whch the Pettts btterly resented. They beleved n freedom from unjust taxes, personal lberty, and freedom to worshp accordng to the dctates of ther own conscences. For that reason Thomas Pettt joned John Wnthrope and saled to New England. Thomas Pettt was born at Wedford, England, about 1610, saled n the shp Talbot whch left England n Mary, 1630. It was at sea for three months. landed at Charlestown, now Cambrdge, Massachussetts, on July 2, 1630. The parentage of Thomas Pettt has not been proven. Thomas Pettt marred 1st, Chrstan - sometmes recorded as Catherne - Mellowes, n Essex County, England, n November, 1629, the daughter of Abraham Mallowes and Martha Bulkeley. Chrstan Mellowes was born about 1610-1611. Her mother Martha Bulkeley, descended from Kng Edward I, and Knghts of the Garter,, and from the Eght Securtes for the Magna Charta of 1215. John Pettt, brother of Thomas Pettt, and Olver Mellowes, brother of Chrstan who marred Mare James, the daughter of the Rev. John James, saled wth Thomas and Chrstan Pettt to Amerca. The famous Ann Pettt Hutchson may have come long wth them. There were seventeen vessels n the Wnthrope Fleet whch brought one thousand Purtans and Non-Comformsts of the Church of England, to ther new home. Many brought ther cows, horses, goats and seeds for plantng. Thomas Pettt was a Non-Conformst, and got arrested because of hs stand aganst the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but was released wthout punshment, went to the Falls of the Pscatagua, n New Hampshre, and founded the town of Exeter. He helped establsh the Congregatonal Church there n 1638. The Duke of York granted the Massachusetts Bay Colony control of the land the surrounded the settlement of Exeter. So Thomas Pettt sold hs rghts, and wth hs famly, went to Long Island. In 1708, he was one of the frst members of the Presbyteran Church n Newton, Long Island, He ded n Newtown before the year 1668. (Note - L. R. Eddleman -evdently the date of 1708 s an error, or the man s the same Thomas).. Page 16
