ST. LOUIS CHURCH FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 30, 2011 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13 Hebrews 11: 32-40 Hebrews 12:1-4 Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 12: 18-19, 21-24 Hebrews 13:1-8 Hebrews 13: 15-17, 20-21 Isaiah 58:7-10 Psalm 146:6-10 Psalm 31:20-24 Psalm 22:26-28, 30-32 Psalm 24:7-10 Psalm 48:2-4, 9-11 Psalm 27:1, 3, 5, 8-9 Psalm 23:1-6 Psalm 112:4-9 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 Hebrews 2:14-18 1 Corinthians 2: 1-5 Matthew 5:1-12 Mark 5:1-20 Mark 5:21-43 Luke 2:22-40 Mark 6:7-13 Mark 6:14-29 Mark 6:30-34 Matthew 5:13-16 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press www.paulistpress.com The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, February 6, 2011 Jesus calls us to be salt and light for the world. This can be a pretty heady experience, when you realize that sometimes, you are doing just that! When others call you an inspiration. When people are drawn by your example of living the life Jesus wants for you. When this little light o mine really does shine, to paraphrase an old hymn. Listen to St. Paul: everything we do is through the power of the Holy Spirit and not on our own wisdom. May our good deeds lead others to glorify God, not ourselves. Dear Parishioners: This weekend marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week and Saint Louis School has much to celebrate! Since its founding in 1923 by Father Howard Bishop, our parochial school has provided students with a high quality education in the context of a strong Catholic identity. In recognition of this superb program the school was named by the United States Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence a very high honor that designates our school as one of the best in the United States. On Tuesday of this week, at a special assembly following the weekly 9:30 am School Mass, officials from the US Department of Education in Washington will formally present the official proclamation and representatives from our state and local governments, including Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, will be present to participate in celebrating this exceptional achievement. Bishop Mitchell Rozanski, our regional bishop, will also be present to celebrate the Mass and offer congratulations on behalf of Archbishop O Brien and the Archdiocese of Baltimore. On behalf of our entire parish I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Terry Weiss, Principal of our school, to the entire faculty and student body and to our dedicated parents for their cooperative efforts in making Saint Louis School so outstanding academically and for so effectively incorporating our Roman Catholic Faith and values in the daily life of our children. A huge Saint Louis CONGRATULATIONS to our exceptional school community. Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK A person can do other things against his will, but belief is possible only in one who is willing. ~Saint Augustine THE ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL GIVE YOURSELF TO GOD (MATTHEW 6:24) The Archbishop s Annual Appeal is now underway. Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Archbishop O Brien. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2011 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is, Give Yourself to God. Jesus taught us that if we give ourselves to God, He fills us up again. He also taught that God will never forget us. All that we have and all that we are is given to us by God. In thanksgiving for all that God gives to us, please give generously to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Your gift will enable archdiocesan support of ministry, education, and services that touch thousands of lives, not only in our Archdiocese but throughout the world. Our parish receives 25% of each dollar contributed up to our goal of $195,000.00. Then, we receive 50% of the additional funds received. This year, we will commit our parish rebates to: Our two sister parishes in Western Maryland: St. Joseph s Parish in Midland and St. Mary s Parish in Lonaconing St. Ambrose Parish in Baltimore City The Sister s Academy of Baltimore The Little Sisters of the Poor St. Louis Parish Needy Family Fund St. Louis School Tuition Assistance Fund. Please answer the Archbishop s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be billed in ten monthly installments. Thank you in advance for your support.

THE ST. LOUIS PASTORAL COUNCIL NEEDS YOU! The Parish will hold its annual Pastoral Council Elections on March 26 and 27, 2011 to fill several positions. The Council serves as an advisory committee to our pastor and meets monthly with him to discuss parish activities, issues and concerns. We are looking for registered parishioners, 18 years of age or older, who are interested in serving their fellow parishioners for a three-year term. Responsibilities include: attendance and participation at monthly meetings, participation in after-mass greetings, and attendance at the annual Pastoral Council Retreat. Whether you are new to the parish or are one of our long-term parishioners, the St. Louis community could benefit from your knowledge, experience and unique outlook on life. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Parish Office for self-nomination or for nominating another qualified candidate. Please return all nomination forms to the Parish Office or place in the collection basket by Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Please do not hesitate to call one of the current Council members, listed on the inside cover of the bulletin, for more information on this challenging opportunity to serve your parish. May the Holy Spirit guide you in your decision regarding this important ministry. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Next Saturday, February 5th, by Father Greg Rapisarda and Father Joachim Giermek. Call Mike Leumas (410-290-8290) for additional information or to sign up for the weekend. Information can also be found on Loyola s website at www.loyolaretreat.org. Please join us! DIVINE MERCY PRAYER GROUP: "Love's second name is mercy," writes Pope John Paul II (Rich In Mercy, par. 7). Mercy is love present in the modern world, more powerful than evil, more powerful than sin or death. Come, explore with us this month's theme of love, as revealed in the diary of St. Faustina. The Divine Mercy Prayer Group will meet on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in the church for recitation of the rosary and the chaplet. Discussion will follow in room 301. I know I need to trust Jesus and be willing to keep living my life to its fullest. Thanks for being honest and real, Joe.
