TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 13, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By all rights, the Americas should have been named in honor of Christopher Columbus, their European discoverer. Instead the recognition went to Amerigo Vespucci, a minor explorer, and not even a ship captain, who falsely stated he arrived there two years before he actually did. The prestigious mapmaker who attached Amerigo s name to the new lands later tried to correct this injustice, but it was already too late by then. Columbus, although he sailed under the flag of Spain, was Italian, a native of Genoa. In his interior life he was a totally committed Catholic, who cherished the principles of our religion and consistently did his best to live up to their ways. Here is how he once described himself: I am the most unworthy sinner. But I have cried out to the Lord for grace and...made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous presence. It took Columbus five difficult years to gain royal financing for his voyage. A significant part of his motivation for it was missionary, as is clear from this remarkable statement he once made: God is an excellent thing. When one possesses it, one can do as he pleases in his world even bring souls to Paradise. Columbus was religious not merely in a private sense of being personally upright in his convictions, but in a wider sense of sincerely striving to share his beliefs with the people of the new world he sailed to. Before departing for his first voyage he noted how deeply he was inspired by words of the prophet Isaiah: I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach the end of the earth. Columbus men trusted and liked him because his navigational expertise was outstanding and because he gave such soft words of command. As the journey of discovery into the mysterious vastness of the Atlantic advanced through its long and suspenseful days, Columbus assembled the men of the Santa Maria on its deck each day for evening prayers, followed by the singing of hymns. And after the first landing, at an island he named San Salvador (Holy Savior), Columbus prayed to God that thy Holy Name may be proclaimed in the second part of the earth. Next Saturday is our Day of Service, when parish volunteers work together on a number of useful and enjoyable projects to help St. Joseph s and our wider communities. Thanks to all who have already signed up and to the project s committee. They have been working for many weeks to organize and publicize this effort. I hope the weather will be the sort of October day so often served up to us at this time of year. Msgr. David Hubba 3 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY OCTOBER 19-20 A LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, has shown himself to be a great teacher with the heart of a missionary. Like Jesus, he teaches by word and example, keeping the poor, the troubled and the vulnerable in clear view at all times. In that spirit I write to you today. Our Catholic Church, at every level and by its very nature is missionary. Its origin is in the very mission of Jesus Christ and of the Holy Spirit. In every nation, World Mission Sunday will be observed on the weekend of October 19-20. It is a time for us to be inspired by the heroes of our Church who serve God s beloved children in places of poverty, injustice, even outright persecution. The priests, religious, and lay missionary groups make it possible for the most needy to encounter Christ, the Sacraments, and living Word of God, and thereby to live in hope of heaven. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the Holy Father s chief missionary arm, providing resources for more than 1,150 mission diocese the world over. No work of the Church is more central to her reason for being. Nothing is more important! So, I am asking that every parish and all the Faithful, experience the fullness of World Mission Sunday. The theme for the United States observance of this day is: Do good on earth. This is taken from the words of St. The re se of Lisieux. It is a call to put faith into action! At a time when the needs in the Missions have grown substantially, and the urgency of the cry of the poor is all the more pronounced, I ask you for the gift of your generosity. Jesus commissioned His apostles and told them, As the Father has sent me, so I have sent you (John 20:21) Let us pray that his year World Mission Sunday will touch each of us deeply, and that we will be united in providing true assistance where it is needed most, for the sake of Christ! I thank you in advance for your serious and generous response to the needs of others. In the end, the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church instruct us: It is by what they have done for the poor that Jesus Christ will recognize his chosen ones. (CCC, 2443) With kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely in the Lord, + Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Luke 17:11-19 While Jesus was travelling to Jerusalem, he met ten sick men. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices and shouted Jesus, Master! Have pity on us! Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went, they were healed. They were so excited that nine of them went home to show their families and friends. Only one of the ten men came back to Jesus and thanked him for curing him. Jesus was happy with the man who returned to him and said to him Stand up and go, your faith has saved you. We have a chance to thank God for everything he does for us and gives us when we go to Mass. There we are called to give thanks to the Lord Our God. God does many things for us on a daily basis. He keeps us healthy and safe from harm every day. He gives us food to eat and houses which shelter us, and our families and friends. God loves us and we need to be thankful to him always. Jesus cured the sick men MISSION OF THE WEEK Say this little prayer every day: Lord, I am thankful to you every day for my family and friends. I am also thankful for everything that you have given me. Amen. 6
