The Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 8:00am Preservice Music: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name Handbell Quartet Welcome and Announcements Hymn of Invocation: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name LSB 940 Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. Hymn: Eternal Father, Strong to Save LSB 717 2

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Athanasian Creed P: Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic faith. Which faith, except everyone keeps whole and undefiled, without doubt he will perish eternally. C: And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. P: For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. C: But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one: P: the glory coequal, the majesty coeternal. C: Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. P: The Father is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. Men: The Son is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. Women: The Spirit is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. P: So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, and the Holy Spirit is almighty. C: And yet they are not three almighties but one almighty. P: So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. C: And yet they are not three gods but one God. P: So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord. C: And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord. Sit Service of the Word Old Testament Reading Isaiah 6:1 8 1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: 3

Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for. 8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Isaiah, Mighty Seer, in Spirit Soared 4

Psalm Psalm 29 (antiphon: v. 2) P Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; C worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. P Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, C ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. P Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; C worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. P The voice of the LORD is over the waters; C the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. P The voice of the LORD is powerful; C the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. P The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; 5

C the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. P He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, C and Sirion like a young wild ox. P The voice of the LORD C flashes forth flames of fire. P The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; C the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. P The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, C and in his temple all cry, Glory! P The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; C the LORD sits enthroned asking forever. P May the LORD give strength to his people! C May the LORD bless his people with peace! ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; C worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. Second Reading Acts 2:14a, 22 36 14 Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them,... 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. 29 Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing 6

and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool. 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Holy Gospel P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. John 3:1 17 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. 3 Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. 7

Athanasian Creed (continued) P: For we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person of the Godhead by Himself to be both God and Lord, Men: So we cannot by the catholic faith say that there are three Gods or three Lords. P: The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father, not made nor created but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding. C: So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another. P: But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal, C: So that in all things, as has been said, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. Children s Message Hymn of the Day: Holy, Holy, Holy LSB 507 Sit Sermon Isaiah 6:1-8 Offering: Patriotic Medley Handbell Quartet Stand Hymn: God Bless Our Native Land LSB 965 Prayer of the Church P Friends in Christ, I urge you all to lift up your hearts to God and pray with me as Christ our Lord has taught us and freely promised to hear us. God, our Father in heaven, look with mercy on us, Your needy children on earth, and grant us grace that Your holy name be hallowed by us and all the world through the pure and true teaching of Your Word and the fervent love shown forth in our lives. Graciously turn from us all false doctrine and evil living whereby Your precious name is blasphemed and profaned. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P May Your kingdom come to us and expand. Bring all transgressors and those who are blinded and bound in the devil s kingdom to know Jesus Christ, Your Son, by faith that the number of Christians may be increased. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Strengthen us by Your Spirit according to Your will, both in life and in death, in the 8

midst of both good and evil things, that our own wills may be crucified daily and sacrificed to Your good and gracious will. Into Your merciful hands we commend [name(s)] and all who are in need, praying for them at all times: Thy will be done. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Grant us our daily bread, preserve us from greed and selfish cares, and help us trust in You to provide for all our needs. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Forgive us our sins as we also forgive those who sin against us so that our hearts may be at peace and may rejoice in a good conscience before You, and that no sin may ever frighten or alarm us. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Lead us not into temptation, O Lord, but help us by Your Spirit to subdue our flesh, to turn from the world and its ways, and to overcome the devil with all his wiles. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P And lastly, O heavenly Father, deliver us from all evil of both body and soul, now and forever. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P We trust, O Lord, in Your great mercy to hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Athanasian Creed (continued) P: Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that we also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is that we believe and confess 9

that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man. C: God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of the substance of His mother, born in the world; Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. P: Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead and inferior to the Father as touching His manhood; who, although He is God and man, yet He is not two but one Christ; C: One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking the manhood into God; one altogether, not by confusion of substance but by unity of person. P: For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ; Men: Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. Women: He ascended into heaven, He sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead. Men: At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and will give an account of their own works. Women: And they that have done good will go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. P: This is the catholic faith which, except a person believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved. Benedicamus and Benediction A Let us bless the Lord. C Thanks be to God. P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. C Amen. The Glory of the LORD of Hosts Shines in Mercy, Forgiveness and Salvation When Isaiah saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, he cried out and confessed that he was a man of unclean lips. If even the holy angels cover their faces in the presence of the King, the LORD of hosts, how can sinful humans stand before Him (Is. 6:1 5)? Yet, the glory of the Lord is saving grace, and with a burning coal from the altar the angel touched Isaiah s lips, removing his guilt (Is. 6:6 7). Likewise, from the altar of Christ s cross, by the ministry of the Gospel, the whole earth is full of his glory (Is. 6:3). For He was crucified, died and was buried, according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, and God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death (Acts 2:23 24). He received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33), and He raises up the fallen world by pouring out His lifegiving Spirit upon sinners through His earthly Means of Grace. To give this saving gift, God sent His Son into the world, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 17). Attention all involved in a group, ministry, etc. at Trinity: Please email a synopsis of your group to (office@trinitysr.org) covering group name/title, who, what, where, why, how and leader name(s), email and phone number. We are wanting to get this information archived and available to all at Trinity. One of the results of our THM was that we all really lacked knowledge of several groups in our own church. We want to know more about them. One of the common themes is that we have most of the same people spearheading most of the activities, groups and such at church. WE NEED MORE INVOLVEMENT! We also discussed how to get more involvement as this develops a lot through relationship-building. We are in need of more relationship-building and/or social activities through Trinity that involve everyone (seniors, youth of all ages, parents, singles, couples, empty-nesters, grandparents...). Being that we have already established a social foundation through Wednesday nights with God's Grub, Advent and Lenten suppers, confirmation and music we've decided that we need to build off of this in a bold way! We are hoping to have these bloomed ideas in motion by this-coming fall. With that said, we (ALL of us) need to roll up our sleeves and put in some elbow grease over the summer. Our next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, June 13th at 6:00 in the fellowship hall. Having said this, we need YOU there and your KIDS!!! Please make a strong effort to attend and if you have children, bring them as well. Your input is extremely wanted by all who want to grow in Christ. In the meantime: Adults, please start engaging with our youth (other than your own). Strike up a conversation... ask them what school they attend, what grade they're in. Invest in them a little by asking them to join us for bible study, cooking in the kitchen, cleaning, setting up, greeting, handing out bulletins, etc. Members, we need to engage more with visitors, new members and those who may be struggling. Please make a strong effort each week by stepping a bit outside your box to say "hi" and introduce yourself to someone you don't know yet. Mark your calendars for the evening of Wednesday, June 13th at 6:00 for our THM #2, the evening of July 4th. We will be having a get-together in the parking lot before the fireworks. Also, for the evening of Wednesday, July 11 th - 5:00 supper, 6:00 outdoor service and 7:30 bonfire. 2018 Adult & Teen Challenge Fishing Challenge is set for Saturday, June 2nd on Gull Lake. If you would like to sign up to fish this 2 person event, there are still a few spots left. To enter or for more info call Dave Wrenn at 218-833-8752 or email at david.wrenn@mntc.org 14

WE WELCOME FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN We are glad you are here! If there is a time during the Worship Service that you feel your child (or you) needs a time out, please feel free to leave the service. If you leave the service you can go to the lobby or use the large conference room across from the church office. The conference room has speakers and one-way glass so you can still participate in Worship. During the 9:30am worship service the nursery is also available for 0-3 years old. It is not staffed but you are welcome to stay in the room with your child. It is the first classroom on the left as you enter the Preschool parent lounge area. There are also speakers in the nursery so you can listen to the service. Activity bags for young children to use are in the plastic tub outside the church office.
