Prayers for Worship ON ENTERING THE CHAPEL Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. In the multitude of Your tender mercies, prepare my heart that I may enter Your house to worship and confess Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, my God and Lord. Amen. BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord, my creator, redeemer, and comforter, as I come to worship You in spirit and in truth, I humbly pray that You would open my heart to the preaching of Your Word so that I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus Christ as my only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear me for the sake of His name. Amen. BEFORE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Almighty, everlasting God, for my many sins I justly deserve eternal condemnation. In Your mercy You sent Your dear Son, my Lord Jesus Christ, who won for me forgiveness of sins and everlasting salvation. Grant me a true confession that, dead to sin, I may be raised up by Your life-giving absolution. Grant me Your Holy Spirit that I may be ever watchful and live a true and godly life in Your service; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen. BEFORE COMMUNING Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THANKSGIVING AFTER RECEIVING THE SACRAMENT Almighty and everlasting God, I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen. FOR BLESSING ON THE WORD Lord God, bless Your Word wherever it is proclaimed. Make it a word of power and peace to convert those not yet Your own and to confirm those who have come to saving faith. May Your Word pass from the ear to the heart, from the heart to the lip, and from the lip to the life that, as You have promised, Your Word may achieve the purpose for which You send it; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen. AFTER WORSHIP Almighty and merciful God, I have again worshiped in Your presence and received both forgiveness for my many sins and the assurance of Your love in Jesus Christ. I thank You for this undeserved grace and ask You to keep me in faith until, with all Your saints, I inherit eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen. 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. (Luke 24:27) 3 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES

Introduction to the Liturgy You shall be holy to me, for I the LORD am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine, says the Lord in Leviticus 20:26. But what does this mean, to be holy? The LORD has set His people apart from the common and worldly, to receive His gifts and respond in prayer and praise. As we receive these gifts that are set apart and holy themselves, He gifts us with His holiness. This is what it means to be sanctified. Not that we can somehow do sanctification. If we are the doers of the verbs, it is going to end up with us failing God s Law. Sanctification is the Lord God gifting us with Jesus holiness, setting us apart as His baptized and forgiven people. This little guide to the services at the Sanctified conferences in A.D. 2018 is intended to help you understand what you will experience in worship this week. Our hope is that through a better understanding of what is done in worship you will come to a greater love and appreciation of it. T T T THE ORDERS OF SERVICE The orders of service and the hymnody used throughout this book are liturgy and music that are common to the universal Church, and in particular The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. As we use such gifts, held in common with many others, is a confession of our communion in the one Lord, one faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all (Ephesians 4:5-6). It also serves and supports the unity of the Church. All liturgical material for the services this week has been taken from Lutheran Service Book. THE HYMNS Choosing appropriate hymnody for a conference like Sanctified is a challenging task. Everyone has a favorite hymn and each congregation is familiar with varied hymns and sacred songs. Here you will no doubt find some hymns that you know and love, and some that you ve perhaps never heard before. In selecting hymns for Sanctified, we have built upon the foundations of past conferences. Many conference hymns from previous years have been included in the course of this week s services, while others are new choices. All are intended to support and flow from the Word of God heard in each service. They also sample our rich heritage of Lutheran hymnody. We trust that the selections that have been made will enrich your appreciation of all that Christ has given and continues to give to us. This year s conference hymn In the Shattered Bliss of Eden (LSB 572), a much newer piece than our typical hymn. This contemporary hymn is written by Rev. Steven Starke, an LCMS pastor and frequent HT attendee. Here we are reminded of the original holiness of our first parents, broken and shattered at the Fall, but through the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, is gifted to us in His Word and Sacraments. THE PSALMS The Psalms are the prayer book of the Holy Scriptures, and they are a treasured heritage in teaching the Church and the children of God how to pray. They were also inspired by the Lord to be chanted or sung among His people. For this reason, the Psalms may be described not only as a prayer book, but as a sacred hymnal. Thus, St. Paul teaches Christians to sing Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Colossians 3:16), as he and Silas did in prison (Acts 16:25), and as Christ and His Apostles did on Maundy Thursday (St. Matthew 26:30). 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES 4

Introduction to the Liturgy There are many different ways to chant and sing the Psalms. Lutheran Service Book encourages us to sing the Psalms in a fairly simple and straightforward method, and we will follow this approach at Higher Things conferences. Most of those who have attended previous conferences will already be acquainted with this way of chanting the Psalms. For those who may not have had the opportunity to chant the Psalms before, this week s services will serve as a good introduction to a beautiful way of praying and confessing the Word of God. CHANTING Much in the services this week will be chanted. Chanting is an elevated form of speech, which honors the words and makes them more distinct and easier to hear. In its purest forms, the music of chanting follows the natural flow and rhythm of the text, rather than imposing itself upon the words. Its purpose is simply to carry the words, not to embellish them. This is part of what distinguishes chanting from singing. Chanting does, however, help to set Divine Words apart from the routine chatter of everyday speaking. It is not surprising, therefore, that Martin Luther encouraged the use of chanting and provided careful direction as to how it might best serve the Word of God. THE CEREMONIES You ve heard that actions speak louder than words. God is holy. We should, therefore, come into His presence with reverence and humility. The purpose of liturgical ceremonies is to give form and order to our reverence and remind us of Whose presence we are in. Or, as our Lutheran Confessions put it, The purpose of all ceremonies is to teach the people what they need to know about Christ. Of course, ceremonies vary among Christians. The Gospel gives us a wonderful freedom in Christ Jesus, which does not bind us to a detailed set of ceremonial laws. It would not be possible to do all of the same things in the same way in every place. A festival Divine Service in a large church with ornate architecture may look and sound very different from a simple gathering for Evening Prayer in a small chapel, or even in a dorm room. Keep these factors in mind as you participate in the ceremonies used this week. The ceremonies used throughout this conference are completely Lutheran. They have long-standing traditions in our church. Yet, some of these may never have been done in your home congregation. Every congregation has its own personality, just as our homes are each uniquely decorated. Whenever we worship away from our own church home we are almost sure to notice things that seem unusual. For that reason there may be certain things that feel new, different, or strange to you. We invite you to participate in these external things as much as you are comfortable doing so. But if something is just too new for you, and if it feels awkward or weird, just leave it alone. No need for apologies, either. While ceremonies can help us confess our faith through bodily action or physical things, it is important to remember that such things are not the main things in worship or absolutely necessary for worship. God gives His gifts with or without these ceremonies. VESTMENTS The various robes and other distinctive clothing worn by those leading the liturgy also contribute to an appropriate decorum for the services. These vestments are not intended to glorify or draw attention to the individual person who wears them, but actually to cover and hide the person while marking and adorning the Office of the Ministry that he bears and serves. The pastor speaks and acts as Christ s ambassador; that is His Office. Vestments help us realize this and confess and give thanks that through the gifts given Jesus is here serving us with His own Word and Sacraments. 5 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES

Introduction to the Liturgy The white alb or surplice covers the man, and reminds us of Christ s clothing us at baptism with Himself. The stole is the scarf-looking cloth in the color of the season. It reminds us of the yoke of Christ, the easy burden for His ordained ministers. The chasuble is the poncho-looking vestment in the color of the season, worn by the pastor who officiates the Divine Service with Holy Communion. Perhaps more rare than the chasuble among American congregations of Lutherans is the Dalmatic closer fitting than the chasuble, but often matching it, and also in the color of the season. It is worn by the assisting ordained minister. Also rare, but not unknown among Lutherans, is the tippet. This is a scarf that looks like a black stole, that may be worn by an ordained pastor while preaching a prayer office such as Matins or Vespers. THE SIGN OF THE CROSS In the Small Catechism, Dr. Luther does not tell us to fold our hands or bow our heads, though these are certainly good and useful ceremonies. What Dr. Luther does tell us is this: As soon as you get out of bed, you are to make the sign of the Cross and say: In the Name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. His instructions for bedtime prayer are the same. In each case, the ceremony that Dr. Luther indicates is one that Christians have used from the very beginning: making the sign of the Cross. The sign of the Cross is the most ancient, simple and profound of all Christian ceremonies, and also the most natural. Among other things, this sign is used to mark blessings, since all blessings depend upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our Christian hope is based on the self-sacrifice of our Lord upon the Cross; so it is not surprising that the Cross is our chief symbol, and making the sign of the Cross our most basic ceremony. This sign was first made upon us at Holy Baptism, when we were crucified, died and were buried with Christ Jesus (Romans 6:3-4). We recall His saving death, as well as the daily and lifelong significance of our Baptism into His death, whenever we repeat this sign. The same things are true for us when the pastor traces the Cross upon us at various places in each Divine Service. One makes the sign of the Cross using the right hand, palm inward, to touch the four points of an imaginary Cross: first the forehead, then the middle of the chest (over the heart), then one shoulder, and then the other. As with all ceremonies there are variations, and these are just fine, too! Some people like to trace a Cross in the shape of a lower case t on themselves, being careful to stay within the lines. They might even return for a fifth point back in the middle. Some like to go from their right shoulder to their left, or from their left shoulder to their right. Others hold their right hand so that the tips of their index and middle fingers are touching the tip of their thumbs in a Trinitarian reference. There is no wrong way, and no one best way to make the sign of the Cross. In this service book you will see a cross symbol, T, at various points in the liturgy where many Christians have traditionally chosen to make the sign of the Cross. BOWING Bowing is a sign of reverence and respect. In the ancient world, people bowed to emperors and kings. In part, this made them defenseless and vulnerable to attack. They laid their necks open to the king s sword, and thus placed themselves at his mercy. We bow before the Lord God because we depend upon His mercy in Christ Jesus, though we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment (Small Catechism, Lord s Prayer, Fifth Petition). The bending low of our bodies before Him is an outward sign of repentant faith. We acknowledge and confess our sin, yet trust the Lord for His forgiveness. We bow before the Lord in reverent faith, 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES 6

Introduction to the Liturgy because we fear, love and trust in Him alone. We bow out of respect for His divine Majesty, because His true glory is too much for sinful mortals to behold; as even the holy angels hide their faces in the presence of the Holy Triune God (Isaiah 6:2). Keeping this in mind, some Christians bow at the mention of the Holy Trinity and/or at the confessing of the Incarnation of the Son of God in the Creed. Similarly, in keeping with the words of St. Paul, many Christians even bow at the name of Jesus (Philippians 2:10), and when the Gloria Patri ( Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit ) or another Trinitarian doxology is sung. SITTING AND STANDING A general rule of thumb is that we sit for instruction, and stand for confession, prayer, praise and thanksgiving. (In your church, you may be accustomed to kneeling for confession; when we are without kneelers, we usually omit this custom.) Sometimes these different activities are happening all at once, and one or the other directs our posture. For example, we normally sit for the instruction of the Holy Scriptures, when they are read at daily prayer and for the Old Testament and Epistle in the Divine Service; but we stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel in the Divine Service, as an expression of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord Jesus, since the Gospel uniquely proclaims His words and actions. INCENSE Worship encompasses the whole person. There are sights, sounds, textures, tastes, and smells all of which are intended to draw the whole person to the presence and gifts of Christ. Incense was used in ancient times (and in the Bible) to accompany the prayers and sacrifices of the people. It was also prominent in the life of Christ. Jesus was given incense by the wise men. And when He was buried, His body was anointed with incense. For this reason we use incense in worship both to give a physical representation of our prayers but also, and especially, to highlight the presence of Christ among us. The basic idea is this: when you smell the incense, look for Jesus. He will be there in His Word, in His Body and Blood, or bearing our prayers to His Father. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P C Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P C Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. My spirit fails!* Hide not your face from me, lest I be like those who go down to the pit. 8 Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.* Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. 9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord!* I have fled to you for refuge! 10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God!* Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! 11 For your name s sake, O Lord, pre- serve my life!* In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble! 12 And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies,* and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul, for I am your servant. FRIDAY Closing Divine Service Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. (Thursday) Psalm 119:145-160 145 With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord!* I will keep your statutes. 146 I call to you; save me,* that I may observe your testi- monies. 147 I rise before dawn and cry for help;* I hope in your words. 148 My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,* that I may meditate on your promise. 149 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;* O Lord, according to your justice give me life. 150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;* they are far from your law. 151 But you are near, O Lord,* and all your command- ments are true. 152 Long have I known from your testi- monies* that you have founded them for- ever. 153 Look on my affliction and de- liver me,* for I do not for- get your law. 154 Plead my cause and re- deem me;* give me life according to your promise! 155 Salvation is far from the wicked,* for they do not seek your statutes. 156 Great is your mercy, O Lord;* give me life according to your rules. 157 Many are my persecutors and my adver- saries,* but I do not swerve from your testi- monies. 158 I look at the faithless with disgust,* because they do not keep your commands. 159 Consider how I love your precepts!* Give me life according to your steadfast love. 160 The sum of your word is truth,* and every one of your righteous rules endures for- ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be- ginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. 151 2018 HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCES
