KNIGHTLY NEWS Saint Maximilian Kolbe Council No. 8762 Pismo Beach, CA District 52 Division 111 FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUME 23, NUMBER 2 Grand Knight s Message Dear Brother Knights, The Knights of Columbus are proud to be sponsoring the Family Movie Night scheduled on the last Friday of every month. It begin Friday, Jan. 29th at 6:30 p.m. with the movie, Heaven Is for Real. Popcorn will be furnished and you are asked to bring baked goods to share if you have the time. Admission is free so join us for an evening of fellowship and fun! Our beloved Brother Bob passed away on Monday, January 25. We pray for his soul and celebrate a life lived in service to Christ and His Church. Funeral arrangements will be in the Parish Bulletin and are listed on the Home page of the St. Paul website at http://stpaulspismobeach.com Recquiescas in pace et in paradiso tecum rursus erimus (Rest in peace and in paradise we shall be reunited) Visit the website at: stpaulspismobeach.com/ knights At all St. Paul Masses on February 6th & 7th, the Lenten Magnificat Booklets and Holy Land Crosses will be available for purchase. We will also have the Parental Notification and Child and Teen Safety ballot initiative petition for your signatures. This initiative will require that one parent or guardian of an under-18-year-old girl be notified before an abortion is performed on their daughter. Today in California, a girl can t get a flu shot without a parent knowing, but she can get a medical abortion without even informing one parent! In states that have lawfully required parental notification, abortions performed on minors has dropped as much as 71% since 1989! Nearly 600,000 valid signatures are needed to qualify this initiative for the 2016 ballot. As Catholic men we must be willing to do all we can to protect our minors and end abortion! Please spread the word and help us get the signatures we need to put this on the ballot in 2016! Thank you to all who attended our Epiphany Party on January 6th! Many people braved the stormy weather to make their way to our hall only to find we had no electricity! Our candlelight dinner was delicious and the cozy atmosphere only enhanced our fellowship! Don t forget your prayers to the patron saint you received that evening! A big thank you to Father Alphonse for organizing that special treat! Hope to see you all in February too! Here are some dates to put on your calendar! Palm Sunday is March 20th and Easter is March 27th. Our next council meeting is February 17th with Officers at 6:00 p.m., Rosary at 6:45 p.m., and general meeting is at 7:00p.m. The Shroud of Turin Presentation and Dinner will be returning to St. Paul s Parish on March 23rd. Reservations will be required due to limited seating & dinner planning. Please feel free to invite family, friends & neighbors to this wonderful, informational, hands-on evening with an admission price being only whatever donation the spirit moves them to give! What an amazing event to add to your Lenten experience! Please call me at 559-707- 0434 or Gary Benevedo at 805-801-3173 to make your reservation. I pray your New Year has already been filled with many blessings and our Lord s Holy Spirit will guide you each day! Vivat Jesu, Mel Ormonde, Grand Knight District Deputy Message Brother Knights, The Knights of Columbus has a new initiative announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson in late November. "Building a Domestic Church" was printed in its entirety in the December issue of Columbia Magazine. Additional comments were in the January issue. For most of our councils, we are doing what the Initiative states, supporting our church and our parish. If you have not read this, you can find it on the Supreme website, kofc.org. Another ballot initiative Parental Notification and Child and Teen Safety will be circulating. I hope all Knights and every council will support this endeavor. This is an example of our organization ability to support our churches, parishes, and our faith. Vivat Jesus, Dan Anderson DD 58

At the monthly officer s meeting, Fr. Alphonse underscored the Year of Mercy as forgiveness is the start of love. Christ s mercy from the Cross: Forgive them Father is a reminder that to forgive (of self and others) is necessary for a life of peace. CALENDAR 2016 February 6-7 Magnificat Lenten Booklet Sale: This will also be an opportunity to purchase the wooden crosses. The proceeds are for the Knights efforts to alleviate the suffering endured by persecuted Christians in the Middle East. There will also be a petition to mandate parental notification when their daughter is considering an abortion. 10 Ash Wednesday Meal 6-7:00 p.m. in St. Paul's hall (soup and bread) 17 Council Meetings: Officers 6pm; General 6:45pm Your leadership team has developed a tentative list of important dates for every Knight. The list is printed on the last page of this newsletter. PLEASE consider a New Year s Resolution to: 1. Pray for the success of all our efforts to help in God s work. 2. Pick at least 1 event (more is OK) to lend a hand. Since, as brothers, we need to work together. Growth is the only evidence of life. Blessed John Henry Newman February 10 Potluck Our monthly potluck will be February 10, 2016 at St. Paul s Hall from 6 7pm. Since this is also Ash Wednesday and to keep with our fasting efforts, the Knight s will serve soup and bread for our potluck meal. Please join us!! I see clearly that the thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds I see the Church as a field hospital after battle. Pope Francis SPRING FLING: We re beginning the planning for our annual celebration on April 29th. Please consider: 1. Volunteering to help with this event. It will take many hands to provide for this joyous event. 2. Start looking for new and gently used items for the silent and live auctions. 3. Selling tickets for the Annual Raffle with proceeds going to support scholarships. Brother Tom Anderson is heading this major event and would like to hear from you: anderona@gmail.com MEMBERSHIP: PLEASE return ASAP and PLEASE don t forget any email addresses we need to keep in touch!!!

Friar Francis Bao Nguyen, O.F.M.Conv. On January 13th, Brother Knight, Friar Bao made his Simple Profession of Vows during a Mass celebrated by Provincial Father John Heinz and attended by many friars, both Conventual and Capuchin. A reception was held afterwards in the Parish Hall. We are proud to have Friar Bao as both a member of our Council and a future clergyman in our Church. Friary Our own Brother Knight, Chris Garza, now is the Development Office Manager for the friars. He invites all Knights (and parishioners) to receive a free informative, colorful newsletter about some of the Province s activities. Please support both a brother and the wonderful service of our Franciscan Friars. Chris may be reached at (805) 489-1012 ext. 23 or vivafriendsoffrancis@gmail.com FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE Pope Francis received Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore in a private audience at the Vatican on Dec. 17th. It was the fourth such audience granted by Pope Francis to the supreme knight. During the course of the meeting, the supreme knight and Archbishop Lori spoke with the Holy Father about the many activities of the 1.9 million (Yes, MILLION) Knights of Columbus in 2015, particularly the Order s efforts to aid persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Through the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund, the Order has distributed more than $5 million to support Christians in the Middle East. In addition to this financial support, the Knights of Columbus has organized a major public awareness campaign about the dire situation faced by Christians in the Middle East. During the visit, the supreme knight also presented the Holy Father with a contribution of $1.6 million from the Vicarius Christi Fund that has generated $56,015,000 for the pope s personal charities and causes since its establishment in 1981. NEW FREEZER IN THE HALL: After an indeterminate number of years, the large freezer in the Parish Hall has gone into eternal recycling. Used by the Knights (and others) for a variety of events, your Council has agreed to purchase a new one.

A free $50 a plate dinner? The Family Potluck and Epiphany celebration on January 6 was held by candlelight usually a perk in upscale eateries. It so happened, that a downed power pole next to Grand Knight Mel (and Shar) Ormande s residence in a modular park resulted in no electrical service that lasted all day and into the night/knight s celebration and beyond. Nonetheless, Chef Gary Benvedo was able to whip up some tasty beef and beans and members brought an assortment of salads and desserts for a grand fair in the Grand Knight s park. The candlelight didn t curb any appetites! SAINTS February 3: Ever wonder why throats are blessed? You can thank St. Blaise. In the 4 th century while going to prison for being a Christian, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet. The physician immediately dislodged the bone. Nonetheless, his kindness was not rewarded and he suffered martyred by being beaten and beheaded. The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson February 14: The secular celebration has little in common with the historical saint. St. Valentine is a third-century Roman saint and associated since the Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love. He is the patron saint of bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses. He, too, suffered martyrdom for the Faith. HOMELESS LUNCH On the 5 th Friday of any month, we prepare a lunch for about 100 of the local homeless. This is a much needed service and is looking for help. The next 5 th Friday is in April (then July, September and December). Please contact Brother Tom Anderson to help at anderona@gmail.com Heaven is for Real is an inspiring book and movie about a child s visit to Heaven and vivid recollection of what he saw. Thanks to Brother Knight Christian Pringle, the movie was shown in the Parish Hall on January 29. Donated refreshments supplied a bonus for this wonderful film attended by parishioners of all ages. More Movie nights are planned.

WALK FOR LIFE Every child! Every child! Every child! Every child! has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! so chanted thousands gathered in San Francisco and across the Nation at the Annual Walk For Life on January 24th. Our Council donated funds to provide for buses to bring central coast participants to the event. COLUMBIA MAGAZINE A refreshing look at the Catholic world and the impact of the Knights of Columbus, January s issue (the magazine arrives well after the News deadline for each month) emphasizes the Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis on December 8: the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Appropriately, throughout the issue emphasis is given to the message of life embraced by the Church and Knights. From the womb to the tomb, both strive to alleviate the suffering and injustices in life but also celebrate the forces of good in fulfilling the gospel message. At the heart of the Gospel, reflected our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop William E. Lori, is respect for God s gift of life. Knights are in the forefront of adding deeds along with prayers to celebrate this gift. One campaign has funded over 600 ultrasound machines in all 50 states (California: 45). This has saved countless babies but also mothers from lifelong anguish. Tom Anderson Gary Benevedo Honorio Cacabelos Joe Hidalgo Fernando Lopez Al Mager Mike Miller Geralamo Salmina

Put Your Loved Ones First During the month of January, we spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves. What will our New Year s resolutions be? How will we change our lives? What will 2016 bring for us? But what about the ones you love? Is protecting them part of your plan for 2016? Sure, there s a lot that you can and do to protect your loved ones. You make sure they re safe. You make sure they re taken care of. You do your best to make them happy. But what if you weren t there for them? What if you couldn t be? Many are afraid to think about life insurance because they re afraid of their mortality. But life insurance isn t about dying, it s about helping your family to live if and when something should happen to you. Life insurance allows you to continue providing for your family after you re gone, by seeing to it that they have the money they need to be as safe and secure as they have always been. It can provide mortgage protection, income replacement, retirement income, final expenses, and so much more. And life insurance doesn t need to be a gift that you ll never see given. Your family can benefit from your policy while you re still here to see them enjoy it. So this Valentine s Day, when you re out buying that box of chocolates or flowers for your wife to express your continued love for her, make a point to schedule time with me to get your wife a special life-giving gift that will help you to protect her and your whole family for decades.
