Neither the body nor the soul can be discounted nor ignored. (The following quotes are taken from 5.) Pope Benedict wrote: [M]an is a being made up of body and soul. Man is truly himself when his body and soul are intimately united; the challenge of eros (not fully unconditional love) can be said to be truly overcome when this unification is achieved. Christ gives us the call to love as the Father loves us. To love authentically, we must overcome the flesh with its impulsive desires and move our flesh to act in accord with our soul. However, we must not lessen the flesh to try and live only by the spirit. Pope Benedict continued: Should (man) aspire to be pure spirit and to reject the flesh as pertaining to his animal nature alone, then spirit and body would both lose their dignity. On the other hand, should he deny the spirit and consider matter, the body, as the only reality, he would likewise lose his greatness. [ ] Yet it is neither the spirit alone nor the body alone that loves: it is man, the person, a unified creature composed of body and soul, who loves. Only when both dimensions are truly united, does man attain his full stature. Only thus is love eros able to mature and attain its authentic grandeur. We celebrate Christ s resurrection, and in this, we celebrate Christ glorifying the body and the soul together fulfilling our destiny with his ascension to the right hand of the Father. Pope Benedict concluded this paragraph stating: Christian faith has always considered man a unity in duality, a reality in which spirit and matter compenetrate, and in which each is brought to a new nobility. Faithfully following Christ means that we seek to attain the union of our body and soul raising our existence to the dignity and glory in which we were created. FIRST READING - Acts 10:25-26,34-35,44-48 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and, falling at his feet, paid him homage. Peter, however, raised him up, saying, "Get up. I myself am also a human being." Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him." While Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter responded, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit even as we have?" He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. SECOND READING - 1 John 4:7-10 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS MAY 6, 2018 3. the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. GOSPEL - John 15:9-17 Jesus said to his disciples: "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another." Key Scriptural Passage: The vine grower removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. (John 15:2) Questions for Discussion: Adult: When have you been pruned by your experiences in a way that led to greater abundance? Child: When have you felt stronger or better because you did something hard to help another person? Readings For The Week Monday.Acts 14:5-18/Jn 14:21-26 Tuesday....Acts 14:19-28/Jn 14:27-31 Wednesday...Acts 15:1-6/Jn 15:1-8 Thursday. 1 Cor 15:1-8/Jn 14:6-14 Friday Acts 15:22-31/Jn 15:12-17 Saturday Acts 16:1-10/Jn 15:18-21 Month of the Holy Eucharist The month of April is traditionally dedicated to devotion to Jesus in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Catholic Church teaches that the Blessed Sacrament is the real and living presence of Christ His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity received into our souls with every reception of Holy Communion. Our Eucharistic Lord is the source and summit of our Christian life, the ultimate proof of His infinite love for us. (Mark 16:6) Being a follower of Christ sometimes means standing apart from friends and neighbors when we would rather blend in. When the Israelites wanted to blend in with their neighbors and followers of Baal, Elijah said, How long will you straddle the issue? If the Lord is God, follow him; if Baal, follow him. (1 Kings 18:21) The Israelites chose God. We must do the same. He said to them, "Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. And by your example, we have learned to share our food with the hungry and to work for the salvation of mankind. We who share your zeal for a fruitful land are encouraged by the compassion you showed to all who needed your help. We are convinced of your gracious intercession and with confidence implore you to petition our Heavenly Father asking Him to grant us weather conditions, that will aid in producing a bountiful harvest. O St. Isidore, you whose heart reflects the giving nature of our gracious God, whisper our prayer into the merciful ears of the infant Jesus. Accept our humble appeal, as we pray for a successful growing season. We ask this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Growing in Faith One minute meditation Happy hope Newspapers, television, even events in our lives can reduce or eliminate hope. It s important to remember to stay in touch with hope. Happy is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God. Staying in touch with hope is staying in touch with God who promises a brighter future.

In preparation of a country wide retreat that will be coming to St. Philip s on July 12 by the John Paul 11 Healing Center from Tallahassee, Florida will be starting a Book Study titled BE HEALED which is based in the belief that Jesus fundamental mission is to restore us to wholeness (see Luke 4:18-19; 1Thes 5:23). God desires us. He desires all of us: our hearts, all of our lives and all of our history. Pope Benedict XVI tells us that healing is an essential part of Christianity. Healing any part of us by necessity influences our entire being (CCC,363-368).. Whether we realize it or not, our physical illness, spiritual afflictions, and psychological infirmities are profoundly intertwined. Throughout the book you will find engaging and at times amazing stories of personal healing experiences that illustrate this interconnection. At the end of each chapter there are questions for personal reflection. Please consider joining one of the classes: Morning class will meet at the Meeting House at 10am each Monday starting April 23 Evening Class will meet at the Meeting House at 6pm each Tuesday Starting April 24 Books can be purchased through Heavenly Helpers.
