Chumash Skills for 9-10G Breishit 2016-2017 Over the course of the year, we will be working in centers on the skills that are important for learning There are many of these skills, but I have chosen what I think are the most fundamental ones and.חומש listed them below. My goal is for each student in the class to grow individually, at their own pace and level, at every one of these skills. List of Skills: קריאה Reading o Students should read the Hebrew of the חומש with ease and comfort o Students should work towards the ability to read with expression and emotion Translation o Students should be able to understand the basic structures of חומש sentences o Students should be able to translate,פסוקים mostly through their own knowledge o Students should gain familiarity with the use of dictionaries and/or translations to help them with words/phrases they don t understand o Students should broaden their Hebrew vocabulary o Students should have an understanding of Biblical Hebrew grammar including: Verbs: שורש Identification of נפעל and קל at least בנין זמן Person Prefixes and suffixes ו ההיפוך Analysis o Critical reading Recognizing important characters, actions, and events Recognizing gaps in the text Asking good questions Repeating words/phrases Breaking large sections up into smaller chunks (and give them titles) Parshanut o רש"י script מפרשים o How to read תנ"ך General Knowledge of תנ"ך o Books of תורה of the פרשיות o תנ"ך o Basic chronology of For today, I will be assigning you a chavruta and as a group, you can decide which skill you d like to work on 1 st. Except for Skill #5 that should be the last one that all groups work on. 1

Make sure you are paying attention to each other, noticing and pointing out each other s mistakes, and (nicely) correcting each other. The first member of the group should read the first 5,פסוקים then the other person read the next 5, etc., until you reach the end of the,פרק then read the whole פרק a second time, switching parts. Now, turn to יד,פרק and find: a. 5 verbs that are written in future tense (even if they have a ו ההיפוך turning them into past tense). For each one, say whether it s 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd person, and whether it s masculine or feminine. Skill #4 Vocabulary from this section Look below to find a list of the more common תנ"ך vocabulary words from this section. Use a dictionary to look them up. Write the translation of each word next to it. For verbs I have given you the שורש in parentheses next to the word to make it easier for you. For בנין is the causative הפעיל שב means to cause someone/something else to return, come back. Skill #5 Critical Reading 1. Read through the פרק in English (this is the only one you should be looking at the English for). 2. Divide the פרק into smaller sections based on the content on what s going on in the story. 3. Give each section a descriptive title. There can be multiple ways to divide it, I m not looking for something specific, just something that makes sense. There should be more than 2 sections, but less than 12. Beyond that, you should use your judgement. 4. For each section, think of one question something that you don t understand, or that you feel is missing, etc. in section Title Question פסוקים 9

Skills #6 General תנ"ך Knowledge Flip through the pages of your תנ"ך to fill out this chart: The books should all be written in Hebrew, with.נקודות If you go to the first פסוק of almost every book, you ll find the word written out with.נקודות There are some exceptions that aren t written at the beginning, or that you ll have to go a few extra פסוקים to find. תורה נביאים כתובים חמש מגילות תרי עשר 10

Rate the difficulty of each skill on this sheet from 1-10 (1= I could have done that in my sleep, 10= I think you have me confused with a tanakh expert). Then comment on anything that was particularly hard/easy about that section? Any ideas you have about a better way to practice this skill in the future?
