Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church Love One Another I give you a new commandment, said Jesus, love one another... He showed the newness of His command and how the love He e n jo in e d su rp a s s e d t h e o ld conception of mutual love by going on immediately to add; Love one another as I have loved you. To understand the full force of these words, we have to consider how Christ loved us. Then it will be easy to see what is new and different in the commandment we are now given. Do you not see what is new in Christ s love for us? The law commanded people to love their brothers and sisters as they loved themselves, but our Lord Jesus Christ loved us more than Himself. He who was one in nature with God the Father and His equal would not have descended tom our lowly estate, nor endured in His flesh such a bitter death for us, nor submitted to the decision, and all the other sufferings that could not possibly be enumerated. Nor, being rich, would He have become poor, had He not loved us far more than Himself. it was indeed something new for love Українська Католицька Церква Пресвятої Родини Слава Ісусу Христу! - Glory to Jesus Christ! Слава на віки! - Glory forever! to go as far as that. Christ commands us to love as He did, putting neither reputation, nor wealth, nor anything whatever befor love of our brothers and sisters. If need be we must even be prepared to face death for our neighbour s salvation as did our Saviour s blessed disciples and those who followed in their footsteps. To them the salvation of others mattered more tha their own lives, and they were ready to do anything or to suffer anything to save souls that were perishing. The Saviour urged us to practice this love that transcends the law as the foundation of true devotion to God. He knew that only in this way could we become pleasing in God s eyes, and that it was by seeking the beauty of the love implanted in us by Himself that we should attain to the highest blessings. Pope Francis, who for two years has repeatedly spoken about the injustices in Ukraine calling for peace, dialogue, and respect for international law, summons us to concrete solidarity. To this end, the Holy Father has asked us to conduct a special humanitarian collection for Ukraine on 24 April in all Catholic churches in Europe encouraging all Catholics and people of good will to donate generously. For Pope Francis this gesture of charity, alleviates material suffering and manifests moral solidarity of the entire Catholic Church in Europe with the people of Ukraine. Three things are most needed: to pray for peace and justice in Ukraine, to stay informed regarding the true situation in this ancient European land, and to show your solidarity. See the suffering of others. Open your hearts! Become the hands of the Lord! St. Paul speaks to us: Now as you excel in everything -- in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us -- see that you excel in this gracious work as well (2 Cor 8:7). +Borys Gudziak, Eparch in Paris for France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, and Switzerland Head of the Department of External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church May Devotions - The month of May is devoted to our heavenly Mother Mary. conduct humanitarian activity. We can only guess what they are actually experiencing. These numbers are not mere statistics. Behind each figure is the tragedy of a person or an entire family. Ukraine is emerging from a legacy of foreign totalitarian rule. During the horrific twentieth century Ukrainian Churches were outlawed, peasants killed by artificial famines, and the political, cultural, and social life of the people was devastated by genocidal and colonial policies. The country was a main theater for world wars waged by foreign powers. As a result up to 15 million people were killed. To heal such historical trauma is extremely difficult. Terrorized for three generations, Ukrainians had fear in their DNA. Corrupt post-soviet governments manipulated a fearful population. The pilgrimage from fear to dignity God-given dignity is a long, winding one. Step by step, Ukrainians have moved forward making great sacrifices for the values at the foundation of European civilization. During the Revolution of Dignity (2013-14) millions of citizens and all of the country s Churches and religions, Orthodox, Greek and Roman Catholic, Protestants, Jews and Muslims, were together, peacefully defending the dignity of the human being, democracy, and Ukraine s association with Europe. In a futile attempt to stop history an authoritarian regime killed a hundred peaceful protesters on the Maidan, Kyiv s main square. The disgraced president fled the country. Solidarity prevailed. For this the citizens of Ukraine have been violently punished: Crimea was annexed and a hybrid war was instigated in the east of Ukraine, consisting of military action, massive international propaganda and disinformation, crippling of the economy, destruction of the industrial infrastructure, and political destabilization not only of Ukraine. This destabilization campaign is aimed at a united Europe as well. And yet the spirit, the hope, and the faith of the ordinary people remain strong. As the Apostle Paul wrote, We give thanks to God always for you all, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thes 1:2 3). Despite their suffering, Ukrainians believe that God has not forsaken them. Indeed, He has not forgotten them. With this letter I am asking that collections be taken throughout Archeparchy parishes during the month of May in response to Pope Francis appeal for aid to Ukraine. Parishes are asked to provide income tax receipts to donors, and to send the collected amounts to the Ottawa offices of the papal agency CNEWA (The Catholic Near East Welfare Association), which has been working together with Caritas Ukraine in recent years. Please use Papal Collection Envelopes. Be sure to include your parish envelope number and cheques should be made to Holy Family Parish and marked PAPAL COLLECTION FOR UKRAINE.. This papal initiative provides us with a good opportunity to put into practice works of mercy called for during this Holy Year of Mercy. Sincerely in the Merciful Lord, Most Rev. Lawrence Huculak OSBM, Metropolitan Pope Francis calls for our generocity for victims of war in Ukraine Two weeks ago, on the Sunday of Divine Mercy, at the heart of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis summoned all Catholics in Europe to recognize and respond to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, where millions of Europeans endure a undeclared hybrid war dragging on for two years. The war has claimed almost 10,000 lives. Tens of thousands are injured, hundreds of thousands traumatized. Despite an official ceasefire agreement signed in Minsk, the war continues. The number of casualties and refugees has only increased. Take Bishop Borys Gudziak a moment to think about it: after two years of war, there are 1.7 million internally displaced people and a million refugees in neighboring countries. Half a million do not have basic food and hundreds of thousands do not have access to safe drinking water. Nearly two million remain in areas where Ukrainian and international agencies cannot freely

Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg Україньска Католицька Архиєпархія Вінніпеґу Prot H/26/2016 24 April 2016 To the Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg! Dearly beloved in Christ - Christ is Among Us! Re Papal Collection for Ukraine On Saturday, 5 March 2016, His Beatitude +Sviatoslav and members of the Permanent Synod of the Ukrainian Catholic Church met with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican. The principal topic of this meeting was the horrific situation in Ukraine that has occurred during the two years of war. The death toll continues to rise, and the number of internally displaced citizens numbers in the millions. These families have had to flee their homes and cities in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine, leaving everything behind them, taking refuge in other areas of the country. This of course is placing tremendous stress on the rest of the country whose citizens have opened their homes and communities to try and accommodate their fellow countrymen. It is difficult to imagine the trauma that these people continue to suffer, witnessing the killings, bombings and destruction of their homes. His Holiness promised His Beatitude and the members of the Permanent Synod that he would not only keep our sisters and brothers in Ukraine in his prayers but would encourage the faithful to come to their aid. To this end, His Holiness announced a special collection be taken up in all Catholic Churches in Europe in April to assist in the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Attached you will find a letter from His Beatitude to Ukrainian Catholics in North and South America asking us to join this papal collection. Also attached is a letter from Bishop Borys Gudziak, a member of the Permanent Synod and Ukrainian Catholic Bishop for France, and also head of the Synod s department of External Affairs. You will see how he elaborates more on this situation. What is the meaning of Vichnaya Pamyat? Eternal Memory - Vichnaya Pamyat, memory eternal, is the short prayer that closes our memorial services, which call for laying to rest or remembering the deceased of our community. People may think that this prayer refers only to memory in this world, but the eternal memory is indeed eternal, for what gain would - 4 - there be if one s name were remembered until the end of time but forgotten in heaven? Thus, it is correct to believe that in prayer we are commending those who have fallen asleep to eternal life in the Kingdom of God. That is the real meaning of Eternal Memory - Vichnaya Pamyat. The Bible tells us how the names of the righteous will be inscribed in the Book of Life, while the names of the unrighteous will be forgotten. In the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus, found in the Gospel of Luke, we see that the Lord pronounces the name of Lazarus, who enters the Kingdom of Heaven, but that the name of the rich man, prohibited from entering Heaven, is omitted. Thus we see that the Church teaches and practices the eternal remembrance of our deceased faithful. We might bear in mind that countless numbers of people have passed through this life without noise or notice, but have received an eternal name in Heaven where neither death nor change exist. We are advised to bear this understanding in mind whenever we sing or hear this short but meaningful prayer. A big thank-you goes out to all our dedicated perogy fundraiser volunteers. We had a very successful year and through your efforts have raised an average of $30,000.00 towards the upkeep of our parish. This would not be possible without the help of so many of our committed parish members. The proceeds from the sale of perogies and from the perogy supper on April 29 was $5,110.00. Our average monthly expenses range from $700 to $800. This includes cost of supplies for the perogies and the cost of food that we provide for coffee breaks and lunch for our volunteers. Included also in this expense are kitchen supplies. This is a huge benefit for our parish and we could not accomplish this without your help. We wish our volunteers a restful and healthy summer and we look forward to your continued help when we resume our perogy fundraiser in September. Many thanks and blessings to all! ~Vicky Adams THE SUNDAY OF THE HOLY FATHERS OF THE FIRST NICENE COUNCIL Three times a year we remember particularly the Holy Fathers who took part in the seven great Ecumenical Councils, which defined the teachings of our faith and regulated much of our Church practice. The Church is patristic, based securely on the teachings of the Holy Fathers, who in turn are based on what the Lord Jesus Christ revealed, what the Apostles proclaimed, and what the Church has received. By holding fast to the teachings of the seven great Ecumenical Councils, we maintain the True Faith in the One True God, the True Faith in Jesus Christ. Today we honour the Holy Fathers of the First Council of Nicea. This Council took place in 325 A.D. The Council defined and proclaimed the Church s teaching that Jesus Christ is fully and absolutely True God and True Man. The Council of Nicea also canonized about two-thirds of the Creed, which today we call the Nicene Creed, in honor of that Council. The First Council of Constantinople approved the rest. This Sunday recalls the victory of the true faith over its enemies and affirms the importance of the First Ecumenical Council, held in Nicaea in 325 A.D. The first Christian emperor, Constantine the Great, convened the Council. The liturgy lauds the wisdom of the Fathers who proclaimed that You, O Lord, Son of God, are equal to the Father on the throne and to the Spirit also. One stichera of vespers gives a short resume of the council: The foolish Arius divided the headship of the Most Holy Trinity into three dissimilar and alien substances. Wherefore, the God-mantled Fathers, having like Elias the Thesbite come together with energy and burning with zeal, did cut off with the sword of the Spirit him who is marked with shame because of his blasphemous teaching, they being inspired by the Spirit.
