CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Keeping God central in hearts, minds, and lives WELCOME If you are a guest at Central today, we welcome you and are honored you have come to begin a New Year with us. Here s some helpful things to know... RESTROOMS are downstairs. There is also an accessible restroom just outside the sanctuary, to the left. The words to the hymns, the Scripture readings, and the responses may be followed on the screen. Please silence all CELL PHONES before the service. At the time of the OFFERING, we realize not every one carries cash or checks; to donate electronically go to www.skokiecentralumc.org/donate.html Today as we celebrate HOLY COMMUNION, you do not have to be United Methodist or a member of our congregation to participate; all who accept Christ s invitation to his table of every age are welcome. Our method of communion today will be to go forward, receive the bread and dip it into the cup. SCOUT SUNDAY Today is SCOUT SUNDAY, when we welcome Scoutmaster Dennis Clarke and the members of Troop 72, their leaders and families. Central has sponsored Troop 72 - which meets on Wednesday evenings in the Log Cabin - since 1955, the same year McDonald s was founded. In recognition of SCOUT SUNDAY, the Scouts will present and retire the Colors at the beginning and end of the service. TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD, ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT Next Sunday is the TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD, the last Sunday after the Epiphany and the Sunday before ASH WEDNESDAY, the beginning of LENT, the forty-day period of preparation for EASTER. This year, ASH WEDNESDAY will be February 14th (Valentine s Day; roses and ashes, anyone?). The sign of ashes will be available for all who desire them from 5 pm to 7 pm in the Sanctuary. A sheet of introduction and preparation will be provided; drop by, prayerfully prepare yourself, receive the sign of ashes and begin the holy season of LENT. One further twist: this year, EASTER SUNDAY will be April 1st (April Fool s Day!).

CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Keeping God central in hearts, minds, and lives ALTAR Today s ALTAR FLOWERS are given by KATHY SHINE in celebration of her birthday. FELLOWSHIP Following worship, you are invited downstairs to Fellowship Hall for a time of food and conversation. Today s Fellowship is hosted by DORINE SOBERS and MARIEGOLD COOPER. Volunteers are needed to host upcoming fellowship times; a sign-up sheet is available to the right of the serving window in Fellowship Hall. 2018 ALTAR FLOWERS The 2018 ALTAR FLOWER CALENDAR is posted on the Bulletin Board by the Fellowship Hall kitchen. There are still many open dates. Please check the Calendar to see when you would like to provide flowers for the altar during 2018. Thank you for your faithful provision of altar flowers, keeping the altar beautiful week-by-week! FLU PRECAUTIONS We are at the peak of flu season, when many are sick. As we gather today, use common-sense precautions, wash hands with sanitizer frequently, and please cover when you cough. Many may choose not to shake hands today, which is understandable (and perhaps wise!). At the peak of flu season, eastern forms of greeting without touching (Namaste!) are the way to go! FOOD PANTRY Thanks to everyone who brought food donations today for the NILES TOWNSHIP FOOD PANTRY. Items may be left in the vestibule by the shopping cart. BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK February 9 - Rose David February 10 - Mike Uhle JTo add a name to the birthday list, contact the office at (847) 673-1311 or central church@skokiecentralumc.org.
