PASTOR S CORNER June 30 - July 1, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is hard to believe that I have been here for one year! On July 2, 2018 will mark my first year as your pastor. The old saying is true Time flies when you are having fun! I must confess that I have thoroughly enjoyed my assignment here in Lafayette. I feel more and more like part of this community as I get to know you and your families. J U L I am so blessed to be part of a community that understands the importance of Faith and Church in their lives. The awareness of the importance of faith, family and fun are essential to keeping a family, community and Church alive and together. The support this parish receives from our parishioners sharing their time, talents and treasures allows us to care for the needs of our Church and community. The generosity of the parishioners is a testament to their faith and support of the Church and their commitment to this community of faith. Because of your generosity we are able to support the homeless as well as provide staff with the tools to better serve you. Your support allows us to make needed improvements and repairs on our property and buildings. On June 11, 2018 I celebrated my seventh-year anniversary as an ordained priest for the Diocese of Lafayette. I am so thankful that I finally said yes to God s call in my life. It has been a wonderful journey thus far and I look forward to what lies ahead. In seven short years I look back at some of the things I have accomplished as a priest and they amaze me. I have baptized 154 babies, married 39 couples, and have buried 140 souls. I sometimes forget the effects of the pastoral side of my ministry because the administration of a parish can be at times over-bearing. It is good to stop and reflect about the good things we have accomplished in order to motivate to persevere in our daily lives. I want to thank all of you for your great support and love that has been shown to me since I first arrived here at St. Elizabeth Seton. Know that I love you and love this community. If I have hurt or offended anyone by my words or actions know that I am truly sorry and I hope that you will accept my apology and forgive me. I pray for all of you and for our parish and look forward to however much time the Bishop will allow me to be with you. May God continue to bless you and our parish, Fr. David Hebert

Centennial News Sunday, July 1, 2018 Letter Sets Diocese of Lafayette into Motion - The very beginnings of the Diocese of Lafayette could be traced to a meeting of regional bishops held in July 1917. At the conclusion of that meeting, a letter was sent to the Apostolic Delegate of the Holy Father in the United States. The letter proclaimed that there was unanimity among the Bishops in presenting the request for a new diocese to Your Excellency. The new diocese would consist of the western most part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from the Atchafalaya River to the Sabine River. The total number of Catholics in the new diocese would be around 150,000 or 25% of the Catholics within the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the time. National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministries in this Centennial Year, the Diocese of Lafayette is happy to host a national Marriage and Family Conference July 15-17 at the Cajundome Convention Center. Please pray for the holiness of marriage and family and the success of this conference. For information on the conference and to register, visit, www.nacflm.org Centennial Youth and Family Fest a gathering at Parc International Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, October 20 th from 3PM to 9PM for Faith, Fun, Music, Food and Eucharistic Adoration. PRAYER FOR HURRICANE PROTECTION O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. CATHOLIC ENGAGED ENCOUNTER WEEKEND Spend a weekend away from the cares and distractions of everyday living. Attend a Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend. The weekend is open to any engaged couple wanting to prepare for a deeper more meaningful life together in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church according to its Church law. Amen.

O LORD, BE MY HELP UPCOMING EVENTS Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? this is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. * Sunday, July 1 - NO Children Church, July 1-29. This is Vacation time for the Teachers and a chance to recruit more teachers. * Wednesday, July 4 - Parish Offices closed in observance of the Fourth of July. The Mass of the day will be celebrated at 7:15AM ONLY! We will not have a 5:30PM Mass. * Monday, July 16-19 - Vacation Bible School, from 9AM until 12NOON, in the Family Center. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serves with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. - Rev. James Field, Copyright @ J.S. Paluch Co. PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS All are encouraged to pray for the priests who work in the Diocese of Lafayette each day. Every day there is a specific intention for one of our priests for special consideration; the specific intentions this week are: * Monday, July 2 nd - Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI * Tuesday, July 3 rd - Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel * Wednesday, July 4 th - Bishop Emeritus Michael Jarrell * Thursday, July 5 th - Rev. Willard Dugas * Friday, July 6 th - Rev. Ed Duhon * Saturday, July 7 th - Rev. Jacob Dumont, LC * Sunday, July 8 th - Rev. Nicholas DuPre Prayer: Eternal Father, we lift up to you these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness of your Son Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing to you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. WEEKLY DONATION June 24, 2018 Offertory: $7,491.00 Building Fund: 365.00 Other Donations: 316.00 Total: $8,172.00 Thank you for your generosity.
