C OUNCIL 1098 ASSEMBLY 0224 S EPTEMBER 2012 Knight News Grand Knight John Haug, Sr. Faithful Navigator David Cruse Ladies Auxiliary President Nancy Diak Columbus Home President Walter Bruch Dates to Remember September 6 Labor Day Parade September 22 Family Picnic October 19 & 20 Tootsie Roll Drive Volunteer to help! A Word From the Grand Knight T hanks to our District Deputy and all who attended the installation of officers. Don t forget to sign up for the Family Picnic which will be Saturday, September 22nd. Rudy Hoffeck has to step down from the important duties he has performed for our Council for many years. This includes delivering fruit baskets to our sick members, holiday food to our local clergy and most importantly presenting plaques to the families of our deceased members. I know it s going to be difficult to replace Rudy with one member so I m asking members to form a committee of five or six to continue Rudy s duties. Please think about this and step forward to help us out, Rudy will fill you in on all the details. I would think being on the Rudy s Duties Committee would qualify as an active member requirement. Our District Deputy is concerned about our Council s membership development and having newer, younger members for our Council s future. To be quite honest with you I haven t been pushing to meet membership quotas over the last three years and won t push it this fourth year. My focus has been getting our existing members more active. That s not to say we couldn t use some more quality younger members and we have recently picked up a few. I ll use two of them for examples. Joe joined us a while back and quickly got on a bingo team. He attends meetings and events when he has time as he is a working family man with school age kids. I see him and his family at Mass and he s a coach at Holy Family Catholic School as well as also works their bingos. Darren is a younger man attending school and he also comes to meetings and events as time permits and I m sure will do more when he has more time available. I see him at Mass where he s active in a number of Church Ministries and he is also a member of the Parish Men s club. Quality Members, younger Catholic Gentlemen who share our faith, interests and the vision of Michael McGivney. If you know of anyone like these guys who are not K of C members please don t just ask them, encourage them to join us. I think you ll agree that it would be great to recruit a bunch like Joe or Darren and put our minds at ease knowing that the future of our Council is in their very capable hands. The deadline for next month s newsletter article submission will be Wednesday, September 19. Hope to see you soon, John Haug Sr.

From the Faithful Navigator B rother Knights, Another summer has come and gone, and the fall season will soon be upon us. I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful summer. We do have one final summer event and that is the annual Family Picnic. It will be held September 22nd at the KC hall. As for the 4th Degree I would like to welcome our new officers for 2012-13, Comptroller Tom Grimes and Scribe Ed Lenzi, and a HUGE thanks to our retiring officers Bob Pare and John Haug. Especially John, because of his many years as our Comptroller. It was a tedious and thankless job and we THANK YOU for your efforts. I want to thank Former Master Jim DeRuntz for installing our officers and those from Assembly 0225 in Edwardsville, on August 25th at the hall. We had a beautiful dinner catered by Jerry s and a very good turn out from the Assembly. It looks like we will be looking for a few new Bingo workers for the 3rd Sunday of each month. So if there is anyone interested please let me know as soon as possible. If we don t get enough new workers we will be asking the other 7 teams for help. I know there are still those who can but won t. Now is the time to start canvassing the 3rd degree membership for the 4th degree. We will be hosting a Exemplification at the Lady of Snows in March, 2013. We could always use new members in the Honor Guard. There are few things that are more fulfilling or rewarding than standing honor guard over a fallen knight or leading the clergy for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist or any type of celebration we are asked to show our beautiful colors. Remember get involved!!! Vivat Jesus, Dave Cruse Honoring Those Who Serve The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus would like to honor those family members who are so proudly serving in our national defense. From the President of the Ladies Auxiliary L adies, we had a very productive August meeting. Thanks so much for your participation. There is lots to discuss, so let us get started! Barb Lilley reported on the fundraiser "Sparkles and Sweets." It is tentatively scheduled for December 7 th and 8 th at St. Elizabeth Church Cafeteria. Confirmation of those dates will be discussed in the September meeting. The Committee is requesting that for the next 3 meetings before the fundraiser each Lady bring in 2 bags of sugar and bottles of white corn syrup. They are also in need of 9 inch aluminum pie plates. This simple donation from each lady will help defray the cost of these products and it will give each Lady the honor of helping out this great fundraiser. The committee is looking for craft ideas. If you know of someone who makes crafts, please contact Barb Lilley at 797-6121. The Auxiliary will have their usual table of nick-knacks, household items, etc. at the fundraiser. Remember to donate 5 items. Please do not submit old, dirty looking items. You can start bringing them to the meetings anytime. Gert Petty reported on the Annual K.C. Family Picnic. A request was made for some Ladies to cook 5 pounds of red potatoes and dice them and bring them to the hall on September 21st. The Picnic is to be held on September 22nd. They will also need volunteers to help out at different stands at the picnic. Please call Gert at 877-3584 or Judy Shoreack at 797-1387 to volunteer. Remember to wear your blue Auxiliary shirts. We will have another meeting before the Picnic for final information. popcorn, CD's or anything to go with the theme of movies to the October meeting. A reminder will be mentioned at the September meeting and in future newsletter. On a formal business note-- it was decided per motion and voted upon with positive favor that if in a meeting the President and Vice President cannot be present or circumstances do not allow her to preside over the meeting that a past president will be asked to rule over a meeting. The past presidents who were present in the meeting had no objection. A committee was formed and Maggie Groboski will chair. She will obtain in writing that (1) the past presidents can rule a meeting in absence of the present President and Vice President and (2) the time of the meeting to be changed to 7:00 pm as the ladies voted on this some time ago. This will be submitted to the Auxiliary to be voted on to make them proper Amendments to the Auxiliary By-Laws. Next meeting, we will discuss the Hot Line Captains. Some Captains have informed me they do not want to do this job anymore. If any Lady wishes to be a Hot Line Captain or Co-Captain please contact any officer. New updated Rosters will be available next meeting. Remember your Blue Membership card must be shown at entrance to our meeting. If you do not have one, we will issue a new one. Your Card should be updated each year. We need some new members. Ladies, please recruit! Keep Promoting Christian Family Life, The Ladies voted to send a basket for the silent auction for the Good Samaritan House Fundraiser which is November 10th. The theme of the night will be Hollywood Style. Please bring some candy items, Nancy Diak KC Attendance/50-50 Winners & Losers July 24, 2012 Phil Szymarek won the 50/50 drawing and Larry Jaros failed to win the attendance drawing.
