Page 4 An Easter Message from our Staff Celebrate this Easter with a heart filled with love and peace. Have a blessed and wonderful Easter and wherever your journey takes you this year, may you always recognize yourself as a member of the body of Christ and supported always by our prayers here at Notre Dame. from the Staff of Notre Dame What Does the Word Easter Mean? The exact origins of the name "Easter" are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. In the Romance languages, the word for Easter comes from the Latin Easter Eggs The exchange or giving of Easter eggs dates back to before Easter and the giving of eggs is actually considered a symbol of rebirth in many cultures. Easter Water Each year on Holy Thursday the baptismal font is drained and remains empty until Holy Saturday when the font is filled with new water. During the Easter Vigil celebration on Holy Saturday night, the water is blessed for use at baptisms, funerals, and sprinkling rites which remind us of our baptism. Traditionally, some people like to take the newly blessed water home after Easter Mass to bless their homes and families. The Easter Lamb Of all the Easter symbols, the lamb is probably the most strongly Christian. Other than the fact that lambs are young animals born in springtime, it has no strong ties to pagan traditions. The lamb comes from the Jewish Passover, when each family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. When Christ became the Passover Lamb for everyone, the lamb became a symbol for his sacrifice. When did Easter Start? The early Christians began remembering the Resurrection every Sunday following its occurrence. In A.D. 325, the Council of Nicaea set aside a special annual day to celebrate the Resurrection. The Council decided Easter should be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring equinox. This is still the method used to determine Easter today, which is why some years we have Easter earlier than other years.

Page 5 God made you and God made me, He made the world for us to see. God loves you and long ago, He sent his Son to tell us so. Jesus showed us many things, To love and share and dance and sing. To learn and pray, to help and care, He promised he'd always be there. He died but then came back to life, Let's celebrate for he's alive! Amen. What is Easter Sunday? Easter Sunday is a special day when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Three days after he died, Jesus rose from the dead. His friends were very happy to see him again. By rising from the dead, Jesus made it possible for all of us to go to heaven. Alleluia!
