MILITARY: Please pray for our women and men in the Armed Forces and their families.

Dear friends, This past Wednesday we began our annual forty day retreat. I remember as a child being fascinated by the rituals of Ash Wednesday and carefully choosing what I would give up each year for Lent. Truth be told, I also dreaded Lent because forty days without candy or desserts or TV seemed like a long, long time to a child! How that has changed. As an adult I know that these days will pass all too quickly! Knowing myself I also know that I would benefit from more days of Lent, not less. Be that as it may, the important thing is to use well the days of Lent that are now before us. The Little Black Book and the daily reflections it offers, our Lenten Sunday evening reflections on Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving, the Way of Cross on the Fridays of Lent, preparation for and celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and our own personal Lenten practices of self-denial and charity all help to make the season a fruitful one for us as disciples of Jesus. Additionally, we are invited this year to use Lent as a time to reflect on the gifts of time and talent that we have been given and to decide how we will share those gifts with others by filling out our parish Time and Talent Stewardship Sheets. Lent is an opportune time to make this reflection. Please make sure to pick up a copy of the Time and Talent Sheet and to return it to church or the Parish Center during Lent. Pope Francis has suggested that one of the things we might want to give up during Lent is indifference. Sins of omission are as prevalent in our lives as sins of commission. To be attentive to the needs of others and to respond to those needs is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Our parish Inclusion Ministry has prepared a questionnaire to help us assess how welcoming and accessible St. Mark is to people with disabilities. It is a perfect way to help us to respond to Pope Francis call to give up indifference for Lent. March is Disabilities Awareness Month and we will mark it in a special way at the Masses on the weekend of March 14-15. The Inclusion Ministry Questionnaire will help each of us to be aware of and attentive to the needs of fellow parishioners. Please fill out a questionnaire and help us take stock of the ways we can be a welcoming and accessible community of faith. See you at Mass! News from Father Todd Question of the Week Q. Last week I heard the Catholic Guy on Catholic Radio speak about Mardi Gras as a Catholic celebration. I always thought it was a pagan custom. Which is it? A. The Catholic Guy is right. However I can understand your confusion as some of the scenes from New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro might seem anything but Catholic! Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. In preparation for the very severe Lenten fast of an earlier time, families would consume all the meat, eggs, milk and cheese in the house on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The custom of eating pancakes the day before Ash Wednesday was a way of using up many of the foods that would be restricted during Lent. These foods are all high in fat. Thus the name Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras was born. The days before Lent, culminating with Mardi Gras, became a time of revelry and celebration called carnival. The word carnival is from the Latin for to leave behind meat. Carnival became one last fling before the beginning of Lent and included processions, music and masquerade parties. French settlers to the United States brought the customs surrounding Mardi Gras and Carnival to the United States which would explain why New Orleans has become the center of the celebrations in the United States. Portuguese missionaries took the customs to Brazil where Carnival was deeply influenced by African dance and music. Unfortunately, Carnival has come to resemble ancient pagan celebrations held at this time of year to celebrate the beginning of the end of winter. Customs from Roman celebrations in honor of Bacchus or Dionysius, the god of wine, have also came to be incorporated in the Christian celebration of Carnival. My guess is that those pagan customs are much more prevalent in New Orleans than the Church s understanding of Carnival which would explain your confusion! In any case, the last fling of Mardi Gras is over and the holy discipline of Lent has begun. May these days lead us to a joyful celebration of the truly Christian feasts of Holy Week and Easter!
