Liturgical Bits & Bytes The Second Reading The second reading, which follows the psalm, is usually taken from the letters of St. Paul and others. Hence, they used to be called epistles. Sometimes this reading is taken from the Book of Revelation. Most often they are exhortations or explanations given by St. Paul to the various communities at which he had ministered. Again, they are a faith witness from those who have gone before. They speak to us the same messages that were deemed necessary in the early Church. Gospel Acclamation After the second reading and a brief period of silence, the cantor begins the Gospel Acclamation. During most of the year this is an Alleluia, a song of praise to greet the Lord present in the Good News. Alleluia is a joyful word of praise and is used throughout the year, except during Lent. During Lent the alleluia is suppressed. In a sense we fast from it throughout this season of preparation for Easter so that it may sound forth with renewed energy at Easter. Instead we sing, Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory or a similar acclamation of praise. When the Gospel Acclamation is begun, we all stand. We stand to honor Christ, whose Word is being proclaimed. We stand because that is the stance of being at attention and ready to respond to God s Word. We stand in reverence and in praise and gratitude. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Saint of the Week Saint John Baptist de la Salle On April 7th the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint John Baptist de la Salle. He was born at Rheims, France in 1651. He earned degrees in literature and philosophy before being ordained a priest in 1678. He dedicated his life to the education of boys and the founding of schools for the poor. One of his greatest contributions was in the training of teachers. To that end, he founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Christian Brothers or the De La Salle Brothers. He achieved his goals amidst criticism and obstacles from civil authorities and even from the clergy. John Baptist de la Salle died in 1719 and was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. In 1950 Pope Pius XII named him patron of teachers. Prayer of the Week Lenten Prayer By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God, may we walk eagerly in that same charity with which, out of love for the world, your Son handed himself over to death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Fast and Abstinence During Lent All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (from meat) in the Church in the United States. Good Friday (April 14) is a day of fast and abstinence (from meat) in the universal Church. The Law of Abstinence binds Catholics aged 14 and older. The Law of Fasting binds Catholics aged 18 and over, until the beginning of their 60 th year.
