April 22, 2018 The Fourth Sunday of Easter Divine Service Setting 4 (LSB pg 203) 8:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER This Sunday in the Church Year is often called Good Shepherd Sunday. The appointed Psalm for the day is Psalm 23, which is among the most well-known psalms. The Gospel from John 10 records Jesus revealing Himself as the Good Shepherd. While fewer and fewer people are familiar with what it is like to take care of sheep, this metaphor of God s protection and provision has become a great source of comfort and hope. God grant that you find such blessed comfort as you dwell securely here in the house of the Lord. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: The Lord s My Shepherd, I ll Not Want LSB 710 INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through your Spirit. Be in our 2

midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. KYRIE GLORIA SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. P: Let us pray Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and 3

forever. C: Amen. Sit FIRST READING: Acts 4:1-12 1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. HYMN: Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus LSB 531 Psalm 23 (antiphon: v. 6) P: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, C: and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. 4

P: The LORD is my shepherd; C: I shall not want. P: He makes me lie down in green pastures. C: He leads me beside still waters. P: He restores my soul. C: He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name s sake. P: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; C: your rod and your staff, they comfort me. P: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; C: you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. P: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, C: and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. EPISTLE: 1 John 3:16-24 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Stand) 5

ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL: John 10:11-18 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the tenth chapter. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. 6

APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Sit CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN: The King of Love My Shepherd Is LSB 709 THE MESSAGE: Acts 4:1-12 OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD'S PRAYER ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. CLOSING PRAYER: P: Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and take them to heart that, by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace 7

and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever. C: Amen. BENEDICAMUS AND BENEDICTION P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN: Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing LSB 475 WE WELCOME FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN We are glad you are here! Jesus, the Good Shepherd, Lays Down His Life for the Sheep The Lord Jesus is the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). His life is not taken from Him, but He lays it down willingly, of His own accord, because He knows and loves the sheep. As the One sent by the Father, He has the authority to lay it down and the authority to take it up again (John 10:18). So has He done, and now He continues to love and serve as the Good Shepherd of the sheep by the voice of His Gospel. He thus calls all people into the fold of His Church, so that there may be one flock, one shepherd (John 10:16). That is why the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead (Acts 4:2). Since there is salvation in no one else, His voice rings out to this day through the preaching of His name, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). His voice comforts our hearts against all condemnation and gives us courage to love one another and to lay down our lives for the brothers, as He laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16, 23). Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by Carol J. Kiekow in memory of her aunt Helen Fonsica. We have openings in July and August. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. The cost of a full broadcast has gone up to $90. Forms are available in the church office. The radio transmission enables our shut-ins, as well as others in our community to hear and participate in our worship. The service airs on WVAL 800 on the AM dial, at 8:00am, and live on the internet at www.800wval.com. Sunday Morning Fellowship In April our host is Connie Mooney. Members who have last names beginning with the letters H, I, & J are asked to bring treats for our fellowship time. If you can help, please sign up on the bulletin board. Please remember in your prayers this week: Rick Iees (son of Shirley), Debbie Stock (sister of Mary Neumann) Betty Winczewski, Sandra Nordquist, Jan Gratke & Pam Hadley undergoing medical care and following surgery.
