Vol. 29 No 7 July 1 2018 The Messenger of Millbrook Baptist Church Inside this Issue Millbrook Ministry Updates News & information about various MBC ministries & committees Pages 1-3 July Events, Birthdays & Service Schedule Calendar of Events & reminders Pages 4-5 Event Updates, Letters to MBC & Treasurer s Report Updates of ongoing events & financial info Page 6 Millbrook at Prayer Various prayer needs of our Community Page 7 July Lectionary Texts & MBC Staff Contact Information Page 8 Find us on Facebook and Twitter Millbrook s Summer Scholars for July Summer Sundays 9:30-10:30 AM We will be taking off Sunday, July 1 from our for the July 4th holiday. But, we will come back again strong on Sunday, July 8th. For the remaining four Sundays of July, we will hear from two distinguished Campbell University professors. They will explore with us the interconnections of our faith and what we eat. We will review passages of scripture in which food plays an important role and of course discuss the significance of the Lord s Supper in our faith tradition. These sessions will prepare us well for Garden Day on Sunday, August 5, in which we will celebrate the Lord s Supper under a shady tent outside! July 8 & 15 Jennifer Bashaw Dr. Bashaw joined the Campbell Department of Christian Studies in the Fall of 2017 as Assistant Professor of New Testament and Christian Ministry. She came from East Texas Baptist University, where she taught Bible and ministry courses, including Biblical Interpretation, Homiletics, and various New Testament subjects. She is passionate about ministering in the church and has served as Children s minister, Youth minister, and Associate Pastor in various Baptist churches over the last fifteen years. Dr. Bashaw is an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches, USA. July 22 & 29 Cameron Jorgenson Cameron Jorgenson teaches Theology and Ethics at Campbell University Divinity School. Although his doctoral research delved into the nature and role of tradition in Baptist theology and therefore, the importance of Christian thinkers of the past for Christian life today his research and presentations often explore the nooks and crannies of popular culture to engage the theology one can find in unexpected places like literature, television, films, and popular music. Jorgenson has spoken to diverse audiences and in each of the settings the goal has been the same: to encourage believers to plunge deeper into the mystery of the Christian faith. He shares the conviction of Evagrius of Pontus that: A theologian is one who prays, and one who prays is a theologian. Jorgenson s hope is that the church at large would be full of praying theologians. Garden Sunday August 5, 2018 9:00-10:30 AM Jack Norwood's Garden 4812 Old Wake Forest Road The Millbrook Mission: We share God s love by being an open and inclusive community of faith, developing Christian disciples through spiritual growth, and serving the world through mission and ministry.

Millbrook Ministry Updates Ms Jackie Terrell is retiring from MBP Jackie Terrell became a member of the Millbrook Baptist Kindergarten teaching staff in 1981. She helped start the two year old program. She has been an amazing teacher. She brought a love of children, patience, and gentle guidance that remained her way of teaching ever since. It takes great commitment to teach for such long time. Not only is she a great teacher, but is also a kind and generous person. She impacted the lives of many families. When you think of Jackie, two words come to mind immediately- elegance and grace. She exudes both in all that she does. She will be greatly missed at MBP. Women's Ministry/Hostess Committee - by Cher Moss The first event of the season was held on June 6 with a taco bar dinner and presentation from Note in the Pocket leader, Dallas Bonavita. It was an informative meeting and received positive feedback from all who attended. We ended the evening with a question and answer session with MBC s own Emma Tharrington who is a volunteer with "Note In a Pocket" and offered her take on the ministry. On June 22 an event was planned for all ages, Picnic at Pullen. The WMC hosted the event which offered hotdogs and hamburgers and fun and fellowship for all ages. Millbrook Meet Up Groups - by by Cher Moss Guys and Grub The men met for breakfast on June 9 at Farmers Market Restaurant with 12 in attendance. The next outing will be Saturday, July 14 at a destination TBA. Contact Grady Moss for information. Lady s Lunch Group The June luncheon was held at Coquette Brasserie. Please contact Cher Moss if you are interested in joining us for the July Meet Up -date TBA. Nightlife Group The group met on June 14 for dinner at Midtown Grille (North Hills) for dinner. There were 12 joining in for an evening of laughter and fellowship and great food! Anyone interested is welcome so please let Grady or Cher Moss know. The next date is TBA. - 2 -

Children s Ministry - by Rebecca Hewitt-Newson You can still sign up for Shipwrecked Vacation Bible School! Friday, August 10 th 5:15pm-7:45pm Saturday, August 11 th 9am-12pm Cost is $5/child and $10/family For ages 3 years old - 5th grade Register on line at https://vbspro.events/p/millbrook or Scan Here to Register Order Your MBC T-Shirts Today - by Rebecca Hewitt-Newson We'll be ordering a new round of Millbrook tee shirts! So plan to show your Millbrook pride this summer! We'll be using our beloved, now-vintage graphic on a new bright Sapphire color. There'll be a sign up sheet for tee shirts out on July 1st & 8th. We need to know how many people are interested and what size you want. Tee shirts will cost $10, but VBS volunteers will get a $5 discount! If you won't be at church to sign up, please email Rebecca or Deborah Tharrington (dnwdesign@hotmail.com) with your size before July 8th. Youth News - by Katelyn McWhorter Starting July 8, and throughout July, the youth will have lunch together every Sunday after church. We ve done this many summers before and the youth always seem to like it and it is convenient for most families. On July 22, we will have lunch at the pool with the Moss Family, so bring your swimsuit and a towel! During our lunches, we will discuss that Sunday s speaker. In July all sessions are based on the theme of Food and Faith. This topic should be easily discussed over a sandwich from Jason s Deli or hot wings from Carolina Ale House! We will even talk about the Lord s Supper and how that meal helps gather and encourage a community of faith. The first Sunday of August is going to be a very different schedule and location for us. We will meet outside and have an intergenerational breakfast, garden exploration, and worship including communion from 9-10:30 am. More information coming soon! MBC Food Drive - by Nancy Brown Ready for the food drive? Our collection dates are July 15 to July 22, 2018 but you can begin earlier if you wish to get started or will be away during that time. (delivery to Urban Ministries on July 23) We need you! Let s make this year s food drive the best ever! You can start bringing stuff now and putting bags into the Kairos classroom - across from the Choir Room. Shopping bags with the food list attached will be provided every Sunday beginning on June 24 th. Just remember, hunger does not go on vacation during the summer! Note: If you can help deliver on Monday, July 23, please let Nancy Brown or Franka know so we can coordinate. Blessings & thanks! - 3 -
