Page 2 Our Lady of Grace Dear parishioners: Augustine was the Easy Rider of the fifth century. He was extremely intelligent. His father was a non-believer; his mother was a devout Christian. Augustine lived in the waning light of the Roman Empire in Morocco along the North African coastline. He had a live-in girlfriend with whom he had an out-ofwedlock son named Adeodatus. Like Easy Rider, Augustine without the Harley Davidson left North Africa, made his way across the Mediterranean Sea, arriving in Southern Italy, before making his way north to Milan. It was there, under the tutelage of Bishop Ambrose of Milan that his wanderlust ended and his life as a newly baptized Christian began a whole new way of living. His mother Monica chased him all over the Roman Empire. It was her tears and persistence which brought Augustine to faith in Jesus. After his conversion in Milan, Augustine put his live-in aside and returned to North Africa. Shortly after his return, he became a priest and then a bishop. Augustine never lost his Easy Rider restlessness. One day, while walking along the North African coastline, he used his restless mind to try to penetrate something of the central mystery of our faith, the Blessed Trinity. He was making no progress and he was becoming increasingly frustrated. He allowed himself a momentary distraction. He saw a little child playing by the water s edge. The child had scooped out a hole in the sand with a sea shell. The boy took the sea shell, went to the water s edge, filled it up with water and emptied it into the hole which he scooped out in the sand. The child repeated this exercise time-and-time-again until Augustine s curiosity got the better of him. He couldn t figure out what the child was up-to. So he went down and asked the child. The child told Augustine that he was going to empty the ocean into the small hole in the sand with the sea shell. Augustine laughed at the naiveté and innocence of the child. The child, reputedly, turned to Augustine and said, Well, there s a far greater chance of me emptying that huge big ocean into that little small hole than of you figuring out the mystery of the Blessed Trinity in your little small brain. This incident in the Life of St. Augustine pinpoints the purpose of theology. Theology is faith seeking understanding. It was in attempting to understand the mystery of the Blessed Trinity that Augustine came to realize the limits of the human mind. At heart, the mystery of the Blessed Trinity is not an abstract intellectual mystery but a relational one. In revealing who he was God is Love God reveals that there are relationships within the life of God. In revealing who he was, he reveals himself in human form when Jesus became man. Here is how the Evangelist John describes that: God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son. (John 3:16), who is the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1: 15). Jesus, in turn, sends the Holy Spirit, the embodiment of love between Father and Son. We are made in the image and likeness of God, in the manner in which we relate to one another. In the painting above, Gaspard Dughet (1653) paints the Trinity in the background and the struggle with coming to understand it in the foreground. Fr. Nick.
