June 13, 2010 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Times The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ. 10134 South Longwood, Chicago, Il. 60643 Visit us at www. stbarnabasparish.org

FATHER GENE The Archdiocese of Chicago has a policy of moving Associate Pastors to another assignment every five, or, with a granted extension of one or two years; (total: 7 years). This is my seventh year at St. Barnabas. So, this month of June will be my final time with you. I am being re-assigned to St. Linus parish, - West on 103rd St. - just a good stretch of the legs! as Barry Fitzgerald said in the movie, The Quiet Man. My time with you, then, is running short. My Irish parents held a belief that they never walk into someone's home with one arm as long as the other! This meant one arm would be carrying a gift for the home they would be visiting. More often than not, it was their home-made Irish Soda Bread. It was my parent's way of displaying gratitude and friendship. Generosity and kindness are companions that are manifest in the varieties of experience, religious or secular, that announce a Gracious Presence among us. Your arrival in my life, during the past seven years, with your arms carrying your wonderful gifts of friendship to me, has revealed God's Presence in so many fine ways. The prophet, Elijah, discovered that God was in the whispering wind that passed by. The gifts of your voices contain that power. I am, indeed, grateful for hearing them and enriched by listening to their sound. Thank you, kindly, for the privilege of being with you. I felt honored, always, to be in your company. All good things for you, and know that I shall always tip my hat as you pass by! Sincerely, Fr. Gene F. Smith Farewell, Fr. Gene On Sunday June 27 at 10:00 AM, Fr. Gene Smith will celebrate a farewell Mass of Thanksgiving for seven years of ministry and friendship at St. Barnabas. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Please come to say thank you for Fr. Gene's loving service to our parish family, and to wish him well in his new assignment at St. Linus Parish in Oak Lawn.

Guest Mutterings ONE AT A TIME A friend of ours was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked along, he saw another man in the distance. As he grew nearer, he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean. As our friend approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and he was throwing them back into the water. Our friend was puzzled. He approached the man and said Good evening, sir, I was wondering what you are doing. I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw them back into the sea, they'll die up here from lack of oxygen. I understand, my friend replied, but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And don't you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference? The local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, Made a difference to that one. Jack Canfield

RESPECT LIFE "That every national and international institution may strive to guarantee respect for human life from conception to natural death." ~ Pope Benedict XVI's general intention for June, 2010 http://www.apostleshipofprayer.org/reflectionsmonthly.html#general Diaper Drive: Next weekend (June 19-20), we will honor the unborn babies who were spiritually adopted by our parishioners back in September. We have been praying for them everyday, and June is their expected birth month. In celebration of their lives, we invite you to donate an unopened package of diapers ("newborn" and sizes 1 and 2 are especially needed) before or after any Mass that weekend. We will deliver the diapers to Birthright, an independent organization that helps "any girl or woman regardless of age, race, creed, marital or economic status, who feels distressed by an unplanned pregnancy."
