Communion can be brought to anyone who is ill or homebound through our Pastoral Care Ministers. A communal anointing occurs at Mass annually on/or near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11. CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS Registration for fall classes has begun. Registration Forms are in the turnstile in the foyer at the McKean Church and on the back table at the Bertram Church. We will begin classes on September 6th, 2016 and continue until April 4th, 2017. The faith formation classes that our parish provides your child(ren) will help them learn more about our Catholic faith because of their participation in the weekly sessions. It will help them access their inner spiritual life, and enable them to see why our faith in Jesus is so important to convey it to others, to give witness to their faith. Even though you, the parents, are the first teachers of your children in ways of faith, we want to support you through the religious education classes. Neighborhood Socials Over the next few months you will be invited to one of the six Neighborhood Socials listed below. These gatherings provide a fun environment and an opportunity for parishioners to meet others, get better acquainted, pray briefly together and share the value of being part of the community. If you are unable to attend the get-together to which you are invited, you are welcome to attend a get-together that works better for you. SAINT ANTHONY OUTREACH Back to School Shoes Today through Tuesday (July 5th) Outreach is collecting donations to provide $30 Payless ShoeSource gift cards for the children of the Sobrato Family Living Center. Your generous contributions will help needy families prepare their children for school this fall with the purchase of a new pair of shoes. Envelopes, with the name and age of a child at the Sobrato Center, are available after each of the Masses. You can either select the envelope for a child you would like to help and purchase the gift card on your own, or simply donate the $30 and let Outreach do the shopping for you. If you choose to purchase a card while you are out shopping, there is a Payless ShoeSource at Oakridge Mall and one on Blossom Hill Road near Wells Fargo Bank. Please try to bring your gift card to church no later than Tuesday, July 5th. The gift cards will be distributed to each child s parents at our annual July picnic at the Sobrato Center on July 23rd. DIOCESAN NEWS, CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING & MORE PARISH EVENTS Bunco Group Saint Maria Goretti Our Bunco group will be taking a break over the summer. There will be no gatherings in July and August. Please join us again on the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., starting in September. She was born in Italy in 1890 and died on July 6, 1902, at the age of 11. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. She is the patron saint of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape. She is the youngest canonized saint in the Catholic Church, due to her commitment to her faith. She is known for her intervention with the Lord those that pray for her blessings receive miracles. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: Monday we will celebrate our Independence Day with family gatherings, watch 4 th of July fireworks displays and possibly have a BBQ type meal. I m sure there will be various editorial comments in print and social media, on Facebook, Nextdoor and other sources of information about the meaning of this important day. But, when was the last time any of us read the Declaration of Independence besides in our American Government class? More and more I am convinced that we need to study our American history, World history, and learn about all societies. We can be very provincial at times, almost medieval in the sense that other countries ought to revolve around us rather than realizing we are all on a journey together, on our planet. Our ancestors had more than a goal of independence in mind. They saw possibilities and had dreams of what a free country could be for so many people, especially immigrants, since most of us come from immigrant families; few families can trace their origins only to this continent. The second paragraph of the Declaration states: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. A commentary on the usa.gov website makes this comment: This sentence has become an especially celebrated part of the Declaration of Independence. It states God (more of a God-as-nature than a clearly Christian God) has given each human equal rights to life, freedom, and the ability to pursue happiness. The pursuit of happiness has been interpreted to include fair economic opportunities. The declaration begins with a discussion of such profound philosophical and religious concepts because it aims to justify a very bold venture. Declaring a separation from the most economically and militarily powerful nation on earth, Jefferson and the Continental Congress invoke these principles so that the very laws of creation seem to justify independence. With independence comes the responsibility of learning wisdom, being open to wisdom and creating a forum to develop wisdom. With Britain s recent referendum to separate from the European Union, they, too, will discover what all that means from creating new transit agreements, to entering new trade agreements and more. In our continuation of Luke s Gospel, Jesus sent out the disciples in pairs to prepare the way for his ensuing visit. With their election, going forth preaching the Kingdom in his name, they ministered effectively among the people realizing the Kingdom of God is now. Those first disciples recognized they ministered together with Christ, not completely independently. Maybe we can learn something from them, learn something from the Declaration of Independence. Let us together reflect on the wisdom of this document and seek ways to implement it. Happy 4th of July 2016! These are informal BBQ s on the Church Plaza. The schedule will be: 7/29 - Men s Night 8/26 - Ladies Night 9/30 - Open to all Please note, that the dates for the Ladies and Men s nights have been swapped from what was originally published in the bulletin. This is a chance to visit and get better acquainted with other parishioners and Father, in a small relaxing venue. Bring and BBQ your own main course, drinks, plates and utensils and we will provide the BBQ Grill and 3 side dishes. Admission is $5.00 for adults with children under 12 free. When we exploit creation, we destroy that sign of God s love. To destroy creation is to say to God: I don t care. And this is not good: this is sin. Pope Francis While you are enjoying your summer holidays, please plan on continuing your stewardship, weekly or monthly contributions to support the parish. Traditionally, there is a dip in donations over the summer months when people are away. However, the church expenses continue. Please consider setting up an online giving account, if you haven t already done so, so that you can continue to donate to the church even when you are not present. Or, consider sending in your contributions before you leave for any length of time. This would assist us greatly. Thank you or your support!
