Saints and Observances 11 JUN (Saturday): SAINT BARNABAS, Apostle A convert who came to the faith soon after Pentecost, Barnabas is mentioned frequently in the book of Acts. He evangelized to the Gentiles with both Paul and Mark, and founded the church in Antioch. DEAR ST. ANTHONY, LOOK AROUND... Consider how highly St. Anthony is honored by the Holy Church. In Franciscan churches, not only is his feast observed with great solemnity, but every Tuesday devotions in his honor are conducted before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, at which devotion all the faithful can gain a plenary indulgence. In Padua, where a magnificent basilica has been erected in his honor, he is called the Saint, as if there were no other that can compare with him. Among Catholics there is hardly anyone who does not know the dear saint with the Infant Jesus. Do you pay him due honor? Do you use the opportunity to gain the indulgence? Call upon him with confidence in every necessity, and in case of serious trouble make the devotion of nine Tuesdays. SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 13 JUN (Monday): SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA, Priest and Doctor of the Church (1195-1231) Born in Lisbon to a noble family, he became a Canon of St. Augustine but later transferred to the Franciscans. He was sent to Morocco to preach among the Moors, but ill health forced his return to Europe. He was the first Franciscan to teach theology to his brother friars. He settled in Padua after 1226 and became noted for his eloquent and persuasive preaching, his work for the poor, and his zeal against heresies. Legend ascribes many miracles to his life, and he is often depicted carrying the Infant Jesus (such as in our statue here at Nativity), because a man in whose house Anthony was spending the evening reported seeing Anthony holding a child of unspeakable beauty surrounded by a heavenly light. He is patron of the poor and of Portugal, and is often invoked for retrieving lost articles. Ministry and Group News ARE YOUR INTENTIONS IN THE BOOK? Our legion of dedicated Eucharistic Adorers begin each hour by praying for (among others) all the intentions entered into our book of prayer requests. Tap into the unimaginable power of focused communal (and global) prayer and let your loving community lift your needs up before our Father. Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall. -- Psalm 55: 22 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. -- John 16: 24 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Please come to visit our Lord during the week, as the church is open 24x7 and He awaits you. Also, everyone is encouraged to sign up for one hour. This will ensure your weekly meeting with Jesus. You may sign up for any hour. Please consider the following hours which currently have no one assigned. Our Lord wishes to speak with you, and you have much to say and ask of Him: SUN: 02:00 PM (Prayer Partners) MON: WED: 08:00 AM 02:00 PM, 07:00 PM THU: 04:00 PM (Prayer Partners) FATHERS DAY CARDS Father s Day is 17 June 2012! What could be a better gift to your father, husband, father-in-law, grandfather, godfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, son, or friend then to be remembered in a novena of Masses in observance of Father s Day at the Church of the Nativity? Father s Day Cards are available at the entrances to the church. Put the name(s) of your loved ones who are fathers, living or deceased, on the larger envelope and return it to the parish office or put it into the collection. Send the card to your favorite father. These names will be placed on the altar during June so that they will be remembered in a novena of Masses that will be said in their honor. You have never strayed too far for the Father s forgiveness and grace. Please call 650/269-7794 for more information or to sign up. FATIMA CELEBRATION On Monday, 11 June 2012, we will hold our next monthly Fatima celebration of the year. It begins with Holy Mass at 07:30 PM, followed by a talk on the appearance, candlelight rosary procession, and Benediction. Please join us. For questions, contact Deacon Dominick or Mary Ellen Peloso at 650/269-6279. Pregnant? Need Help? FOR GREATER GLORY 21 May 2012 was the feast day of St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions. St. Christopher, along with 21 other priests and three lay companions, were martyred between 1915 and 1937, by shooting or hanging for their membership in the Cristero movement. FOR GREATER GLORY is an action epic about the Cristeros War that follows the true life stories of many of those who became martyrs for the faith. This major motion picture opens 01 June 2012 in the U.S. Archbishop Niedereaur gives the movie a thumbs-up. The film is a depiction of the uprising against the Mexican government from 1926-1929, when anti-clerical legislation was enforced by the government in an attempt to secularize the country by stamping out the Catholic faith. Church property was seized, all foreign priests expelled, and the monasteries, convents and religious schools closed. In what became the Cristeros War, thousands of Mexican Catholics took up arms in revolt. They were known as the Cristeros and their motto was Viva Cristo Rey! To visit the movie s website go to www.forgreaterglory.com. CATHOLICISM This series on DVD by Rev. Robert Barron will be shown at St. Matthew s Cronin Center (San Mateo) on Wednesdays at 07:30 PM. Each Wednesday one of the ten episodes will be shown. This is a magnificant video presentation of our beautiful Catholic faith throughout the world, with rich commentary provided by Father Barron. Each episode runs about 55 minutes. Third episode: 06 June 2012. All are welcome. Call 650/572-1468 for more information.

Young Believers What Does the Catechism Say About... Corpus Christi? Chapter 1, Article 3 (The Sacrament of the Eucharist) sections 1324-1327: The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit. Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all. In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking. section 1333: At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, become Christ s Body and Blood. Faithful to the Lord s command the Church continues to do, in his memory and until his glorious return, what he did on the eve of his Passion: He took bread.... He took the cup filled with wine.... The signs of bread and wine become, in a way surpassing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ; they continue also to signify the goodness of creation.
