We ask half of this, or 5% for your Parish Church. From the Desk of Fr Joe An Important Request From the United States Bishop s Conference Our parish has been selected to participate in a national survey to study how well parishes, like Saint William, ministers to the many culturally diverse communities across the United States. The study has been commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and is being conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, a Catholic research center. The USCCB will use the results to better understand parish life and to develop better resources for parishes. The survey will be done at all the Masses next Sunday. It will take place during the Mass and it is to be completed by all parishioners over the age of 16. I ask that you bring a pen or a pencil to Mass to make it easier to answer the survey questions. Saint William will receive a report about eight weeks after we do the survey. These results will be combined with the national results to better serve the needs of the various ethnic communities. I thank you for your participation in completing this survey. The Dedication of Saint John Lateran Basilica Saint Paul, in the second reading today, tells the Corinthians; "Y ou are God's building...do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" In is these words we need to remember as we hear Jesus talk about the Temple in the gospel today and why we celebrate the feast of a Basilica found in Rome. St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome is considered the Pope's cathedral in the Diocese of Rome. The emperor Constantine donated the land to Pope Melchiades in 311 A.D. Until St. Peter's Basilica was built in the sixteenth century, the popes lived at the same site. This feast is celebrated as a reminder of the unity of all of us in the Church under the Bishop of Rome, presently Pope Francis and how we are the Body of Christ. John's gospel recalls the words of Jesus when he said: "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. Jesus, of course, was referring to the temple of his body, not the physical building in Jerusalem. Jesus knew his death was coming but he placed his trust in His Father that his death would not be the end. Jesus' body would be destroyed on the Cross, but not forever for three days later he rose to open heaven to all of us. Over the years, the Lateran Basilica has been sacked, damaged by fire and almost destroyed by an earthquake. The Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed many times and rebuilt. This feats reminds us the Catholic Church as the temple of God is attacked many times over and still continues over two thousand years later. We, who are the Temple of God are tempted to sin, to doubt, to abandon the Lord, but we are reassured today if we remain steady in our belief, we too will be raised up on the last day!
