ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. From the Desk of the Pastor July 3, 2016 This month we will be having our Annual Feast. It is a time when we, as a parish, and a greater community, gather together to celebrate our faith and also to celebrate ourselves as a community. It is a time when neighbors, friends and some from the surrounding areas can gather, have a good time, perhaps meet new friends and re-acquaint ourselves with old ones. It is a time of celebration of religion and community experience, not mutually exclusive. We Americans pride ourselves on the separation of Church and State but many of us do not understand what that really means. Freedom of Religion is not Freedom from Religion, but it seems that that is what is commonly meant by many. The First Amendment of the Constitution was never meant to keep religion out of our lives. It was meant to allow us to choose what manner we prefer to worship our higher being and to allow others that same right. Religious Freedom is defined as...a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, or worship, and observance. The Old World did not afford many people that privilege, and neither, for the most part, did our colonies. Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island to escape the persecution of Puritanical Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Boston Martyrs refers to four individuals executed in the 1660's for being Quakers. The list goes on. So when the framers of the Constitution sat down to make up a system of government and laws by which we could live as free individuals, they wanted to insure that we would have the right to worship as we, as individuals, saw fit, without the interference of government. In today s society, however, we have allowed some individuals belief, or lack of belief, to dictate the actions of others. We enact laws that allow a government to dictate actions that go against religious belief, and in most cases common sense. We seek to be politically correct and adopt an attitude of benign indifference. We believe that, as long as the government is not beating down my door, that it really makes no difference. Unfortunately this is not the case. Whenever government seeks to impose an agenda upon the populace that favors a particular group, people of faith vs. people who do not profess those same beliefs, it affects every individual. The Constitution professes that, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. We, as a people must elect individuals who profess that belief. A belief in the right of us, as individuals to worship whatever higher being we believe in as we see fit and not to enact laws that would force us to do otherwise. Have a Happy 4 th and come join with us in our celebration of Faith and Community. Readings for This Week First Reading: Isaiah 66:10-14c Isaiah instructs the people of Jerusalem to rejoice, because God would restore her prosperity. The people will better understand God's power through their homeland's restoration. Please note that the Parish Office will be closed on Monday, July 4 th for Independence Day. Banns of Marriage 3rd Carrissa Benitez and Joseph Fitzpatrick Second Reading: Galatians 6:14-18 Paul describes the sign of the cross of Jesus as all that is significant. Following the old laws is unimportant. Instead, being baptized in Christ and adhering to his ideals is what matters most. Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 Jesus sent forth seventy-two disciples to preach his good news, telling them "the harvest is rich, but the workers few." He also gave them detailed instructions on how to act towards the people. Jesus then reminded them not to be happy because of their power over evil, but to rejoice in the salvation they would achieve.

RCIA/RCIT God Wants You! God is always in relentless pursuit of us, drawing us towards him. His presence in our lives is the deepest desire of every human heart; we were made for this. He wants to share his divine life with us, and unite us to himself, forever. This is what it means to be saved. He does this through his Church, the Body of Christ on earth and in heaven. The Church is the way we enter into a life giving relationship with God. The Sacraments of the Church impart to us this Divine life, enabling us to know, love, and serve God and all he has created. The Church is the sacrament of salvation for all people. We are not born with this saving grace. If you are standing on the outside looking in come in! The RCIA/RCIT (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults/Teens) is the program of instruction and preparation for the initiation rites of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. These are the means God has established for us to enter into lifelong communion with him, and with each other. Perhaps you are already baptized, but never completed the other sacraments of initiation. The RCIA/RCIT will prepare you to receive them fruitfully. To find out more, call Deacon Scott Bierbaum 845-225-3947; Deacon Art Weiner 845-803-3699; or (RCIA) Karen Mahon 845-225-1835. ST. SEBASTIAN S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM 192 purchased - 260 Niches still available We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. There are 89 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones. Save the Date! If you have not made your pledge please consider pledging whatever your means allow. Our parish has 4,500 families. Thank you to the 367 families who have made a pledge.
